OVERVIEW

FatCage MB155SP-B - Five 3.5" in Three 5.25" Hot Swap SATA HDD Cage

Introducing the FatCage MB155SP-B, a 5-in-3 SATA 6Gbps hot swappable internal RAID backplane cage. This is the lite version of the MB45X series by removing the monitoring features, increasing the cooling performance, and reducing the overall cost, while keeping the same three-year warranty and the core tray system for hot swapping and maintenance are kept for the best reliability in the market.

Maximum Space Saving & Reliable Build

The MB155SP-B built to be a lighter module, while more importantly maintaining the same level of quality, build, and service you'd expect from an Icy Dock product. While the design has gone through some changes, the space saving design is still established. The backplane module allows up to a massive 5 x 3.5" SATA III hard drives, while only consuming three 5.25" bays.

The FatCage has also been redesigned for the type of power connector accepted. 15-Pin SATA power is used to provide better accessibility for most modern host systems. They are also compatible with cables with metal latches to improve security when installed into a system.

High-Octane Airflow

Along with being a lighter package, the cooling has been redesigned to provide the utmost airflow to your hard drives. The FatCage uses a full metal body that allows for the effective heat dissipation possible in various types of applications. Meanwhile, our enhanced direct air flow design allows the included a large 92mm cooling fan to raise its efficiency to cool down your hard drives, by closing and rerouting most vents to route incoming air directly to the cooling fan. There are dual exhaust vents on the top and bottom to additionally help keep drives temperatures while improve airflow.

EZConvert

In addition, the backplane logic PCB has larger cut outs in key locations to allow more air to flow into and exit the MB155SP-B, making it an ideal system to store and cool your hard drives.

Modularized Cooling System

The included 92mm cooling fan is fully modularized for the most hassle-free experience of replacing and maintaining and is compatible with most aftermarket cooling fans of the same size. To expand the range of compatible fans, both 2- and 3-pin fan power ports are available and are conveniently located for great accessibility. This provides the user the most flexible options available and freedom desired.

EZConvert

The FatCage MB155SP-B features a three-mode fan speed jumper which can be changed at will to control the fan speed easily. The three modes include: High, Low and Off with respective speeds of 100%, 60% and 0% relative to maximum output. The settings can be simply changed by removing the jumper and relocating into the desired setting.

Reliable Hot Swap System

The MB155SP-B has kept the same interchangeable EZ-Tray used in MB45X, MB876, MB559, and MB561 series. This allows you to continue to use the same trays from these series, or our compatible external 3.5" models without any issues regarding switching to new designs. The EZ-Tray accepts most 3.5" SATA hard drives and is very easy to install / remove to the device in two steps – press the release button and pull or push the lever. The built-in rail system acts as the mechanism to ensure a fully secured connection every time. This allows for easy replacement in case of RAID failure or transporting of data.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Build Quality, Easy To Install

Pros: Solid Build Quality
Easy To Use - Plug and Play
5 drive bays in three 5.25 slots

Cons: The 92mm fan on the back sounds like a jet taking off. It is substantially louder than the six 120mm fans in my case.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's just what I expected it to be, which is a good thing.

Pros: Works well, relatively easy to install. Mine came with all the screws needed to mount the cage in the case and enough screws for 5x hard drives in the sliding trays. The trays in mine also have holes drilled into the bottom to accommodate 2.5" drives, which was a nice surprise... it allowed me to repurpose a 2TB 15mm height 2.5" drive that I had lying around without having to buy some kind of conversion kit or adapter.

The included fan is a standard, run of the mill 92mm fan which can easily be replaced with something better. I can't speak for the performance/noise level of it since I replaced it with a Noctua Redux fan before ever installing this thing.

It only needs 3 SATA power connectors to power all 5 drives.

Cons: The latching mechanism is a bit weird on one of my trays; sometimes the lever won't pop up.

The included fan really should have included a fan grill, as it can get a bit messy with all those SATA and power cables clumped up between the back of the fan and the PC power supply. Lucky I had a 92mm fan grill on hand, or I would have had to deal with wires hitting the fan.

One of the SATA connectors is at the side of the rear, making it very awkward to reach once installed in the case... especially so in my case which only opens up from one side panel.

I never realized how loud 5 hard drives can be until I installed this. Fortunately it's not too much of a problem for me but don't stick one of these loaded with 5 drives in a HTPC if you care about noise at all.

Other Thoughts: Great for a DIY file server or media box.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Product, Bad Manual

Pros: - Tons of room for more drives. Some cases convert their 5.25" bays into 4x 3.5" rather than 3 which makes this less compelling, but for anyone else it's a great way to cram more hard drives in.
- Quiet enough (note: third-party fan used).
- Easy* to install, easy drive mount/remove.

Cons: - Docked one star because the manual/pamphlet says the fan jumper is 100% by default--it was in the 66% position on mine.

Other Thoughts: * If you have a case with internal rails or tabs (like my CM Storm Trooper) either look elsewhere or grab a set of pliers. I suspect accommodating those rails/tabs might cut into drive mounting space, making this a 4 drive enclosure (which Icy Dock already sells as another product).

3 out of 5 eggsFlaky and the fan isn't very useful

Pros: Sturdy caddies. 3 SATA power plugs are better than the 5 I would have needed. Hot swap backplanes work most of the time. The fan is replaceable.

Cons: One of the caddies was a little too high so I have to push down on it to get the HDD in place. 2 times I had the left slot go out -- although it seems to okay now.

The fan is not very useful for Enterprise drives. Even the 7200 RPM nearline drives I use get to 39 C at full load with the ambient temperature at 15 C.

Other Thoughts: Very useful for space saving and getting 5 drives. This comes at a cost since I don't think you can adequately cool 7200 RPM drives at full load. You will definitely need a higher CFM fan unless you have a very high airflow case.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It works electrically.

Cons: How do you mount the hard drives to the provided slide-in-carriers? The screws provided can only be used to hold the cage in place in a computer rack. The screws necessary for the hard drives must be low profile heads that will get pass cage slide guides for the slide-in-carrier.

These special low profile head screws are not provided. They typically do not come with new retail drives and especially not with OEM drives. Luckily I have another manufacturer’s similar type cage where they did provide the screws so I could test this product. Good luck finding the screws in a store.

Other Thoughts: It would have been nice to have individual on/off switches like other cages of this type have. Instead, to temporally disable a drive, you have to unplug it causing a lot of ware on the connectors.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent HotSwap Bay

Pros: Easy to install. This fit perfectly in my Rosewill RFX-100B 4U Server Chassis with plenty of room for all fans and cabling. Great price.

Cons: Not enough positions or the rails. Depending on where this is installed in my Rosewill RFX-100B Chassis I either could not use the rails or they just simply did not lineup correctly. One LED light was stuck in "read" mode colored orange so I could not identify whether the drive was in use or not. Bad drive slot. Slot 0 was bad out of the box. No mater which drive I installed in that slot I would immediately get a degraded RAID. After connecting all the drives directly to my RAID controller I had no problems so it was definitely something wrong with the SATA connection or the power connection to the drive. Sending back on RMA.

Other Thoughts: I can really tell this would have been exactly what I was looking for but it was a deal breaker not having all 5 drive bays operational.

3 out of 5 eggsPoor Quality, little airflow

Pros: 5 Hot Swap bays for 3 5.25 bays is amazing but wouldn't fill all 5 bays with 3.5'' drives due to airflow issues.

Cons: 1. Poor Quality

The Sata ports connected to the PCB board are very fragile. I took great care when connecting all my cables to the motherboard and setup 5 drives for T-Raid.

Worked Great for 8 months until one of the drives went offline. I swapped the drive and the brand new didnt work either. I cracked the case and found that the SATA1 port was dangling off the PCB board. checked the other 4 and was amazed at how much looser all of then felt from time of installation so beware.

2. Airflow

With all 5bays being used there is really no airflow at all through the cage. Drive temps for drives in the bays averages 55c vs 42c in the hard drive bays of the tower.

Taking two drives out and running 3 out of 5 dropped temperatures for drives in the cage from 55c to 44c but still warmer than drives in the case.

Other Thoughts: Go for the 3x5.25 to 4x3.5'' instead of this one. If you absolutely need 5 find a model with better airflow.

I love the idea of these cages but 5 drives is one too many as you cannot run all 5 bays without running the risk of premature drive failure due to heat.

Like many others have said this cage does require you to bend back and edges your case has for 5.25 drives to sit on but this is fairly easy and was not a concern for me.

5 out of 5 eggsSimply Great

Pros: - The installation was pretty easy. I built a server with my brother and we unscrewed the case mounts and hammered down the flaps.
- It's simply stylish. No silly looking bells or whistles. It just has a sexy latch and a sexy LED.
- It's sturdy and well-designed. The first couple days you might have trouble getting in the drive, but once you do there's no problem. There are little wheels on the bottom to smooth the sliding in process.
- You get alot. 5 drives in 3 slots. That's 66% extra space you just gained.

Cons: - The fan is loud. This is even after a quiet after market fan. My impression is that the device lacks a fan controller and has the fan set to run constantly at full speed.

- It is a little hard to slide the drives in, but that is offset by having the sheer number of drives.

Other Thoughts: It's nice. I shopped around and couldn't find a better one at this relative price point. (If you're willing to shell out an additional $100+ you can find better)

3 out of 5 eggsFatcage is 1/2" too fat!

Pros: - works fine
- great design

Cons: - Either cut slots into the sides of this device or figure out some other way to trim a 1/2" off its width!
- I have at least 7 different makes/models of PC chassis at my place of work. NONE of these chassis would accept this fatcage UNLESS I bent their built-in slide rails in the 5.25" bays, into a flat, vertical position.
The unit is just too wide! Manufacturer should have stopped at 4 bays and made this unit so it COULD fit into a standard ATX computer chassis, either mid-tower or full-tower.

Other Thoughts: Functionally and aesthetically a nice device.

Points off for the fact it just won't fit into standard PC chassis WITHOUT some chassis 5.25" bay area modifications.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Works Great. I now have 5x 2TB HDDs.
My case is running cooler now.

Cons: Had to bend the rails in the 5.25" drive bays up out of the way.
