TurboSwap Tray-Less 3.5" SATA Hard Drive Mobile Rack – MB171SP-B

Tray-less designs have always been a trade-off between convenience and security, but that's not the case for TurboSwap MB171SP-B. The ICYDOCK TurboSwap MB171SP-B keeps all the benefits of the tray-less design with superior build quality, improved cooling efficiency and its unique shock absorbing design for maximum stability. It fits any standard 5.25" bay and is built rugged with all metal design to take a beating. This lockable mobile rack is designed for rugged applications such as medical & military systems, industrial PCs and servers. It includes features such as drive power button, ultra-slim 80mm cooling fan, fan speed control, and optional screw holes for an add-on 120mm cooling fan which can be great for gamers and power users seeking a hot-swap bay built in to their system with SATA III support.

The Benefits of a Tray-Less Drive Combined with Stability

There are many benefits to having a tray-less design – it allows you to quickly swap the drives without the fuss of rewiring or installing trays onto your drives. Reliability and stability of tray-less mechanisms are always a concern as it's necessary to add moving parts. The TurboSwap MB171SP-B takes this into consideration and allows you to hot-swap drives within seconds, while maintaining outstanding drive stability and overall reliability. The Ultra-Flex shock absorbing kit provides excellent drive support whether it's a half-height drive or a full size drive – it stabilizes the drive and absorbs vibrations. For increased reliability, we've simplified and reengineered the ejection mechanism with all metal arms to create a strong product that's built to last. Setup is incredibly simple: just insert this unit into a single 5.25" bay, secure the unit in with screws, plug a 15-pin power cable + 7-pin SATA cable, and you're good to go.

Increase the Lifespan of Your Drives

Both performance and drive life expectancy decrease when heat increases so it's best to keep your drive cool. Our included ultra slim 80mm fan is mounted beneath the rack to allow sufficient cooling for all types of applications. Whether you're running a server that's constantly under heavy load or media system that's running 24/7, you'll be able to rest at ease knowing your drives aren't overheating. We've also added fan control to allow user management, so controlling drive temperatures will be as easy as pressing a button. If you have a need to customize the units by adding an aftermarket 80mm or larger 120mm fan, go right on ahead – we've added the necessary screw hole spacing for this purpose. Individual power control allows you to turn off your HDD with the touch of a button which can help you preserve the life of your drives.

Security Matters

If your environment demands the toughest and most robust parts, then you'll be more than satisfied with our MB171SP-B TurboSwap. There are other benefits to having all metal design, besides the obvious sturdiness. The unit acts as a giant heat sink to disperse heat from the drive to keep your drives cool. The TurboSwap is also perfect for industries that require a certain flammability rating since its all metal design abides to these requirements. It's a great choice for military or medical servers.

With standard hot swappable drive racks, you run the risk of an unauthorized personnel being able to quickly swipe crucial data within the blink of an eye. Using our MB171SP-B TurboSwap allows you to lock your drive in place to prevent theft or tampering to your drives. We're one of the few companies that integrate barrel locks and keys in our devices which further increase security. This barrel locking mechanism along with the all metal tough design allows you to add an extra layer to your data protection – which is required for most businesses.

Compatible with Our Lineup of SSD Converters

It wouldn't be labeled ICYDOCK if it wasn't well thought out, would it? Our MB171SP-B goes hand-in-hand with our 2.5" to 3.5" converters to allow compatibility with 2.5" SATA HDD/SSDs.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for booting multiple OSs and option to Power Off drive when not in use

Pros: Ideally, the power switch was the motivator. The build quality is great. All metal design where you need it. Nice precision mechanism for taking the drive out. The cooling fan and variable speed control was a great added feature you don't see on anything else. I can either boot directly from the drive or enable hot swap and use the bay to swap out drives. Setup is a breeze. The box has everything you need to install it on any computer. Feels solid...very rugged.

Cons: None...absolutely nothing wrong.

Other Thoughts: Yes, this bay on sale is still $10 more than the Rosewill or Startech or whatever knock-off variants for a good reason. This ICY Dock has the extra features for those of us that want all the options. I've seen the other products and read the reviews and decided on the ICY Dock for the luxury of being able to just power down a bay when the hard drive will not be in use.

In my setup, I have W10 and W7 installed independently on two drives. I mostly use the W10 and run the W7 on occasion. Since the W7 drive seldomly is needed, there's no sense running it every time I boot to W10 as I am not sharing files between the two OSs; this is where the power switch sold me.

Most likely, I'll pick up another one for the W10 drive. This way, I can keep both drives alive longer. I highly recommend spending the extra money and choosing this unit if you want a premium device that will provide much more flexibility of use and keep the hard drive cool. As you know, cooler makes everything last a whole lot longer...heat is your enemy in electronics.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Product Overall

Pros: * Solid construction.
* On/off switch.
* Fan with fan control.

Cons: * The edges of a flat alignment contact spring catches on the top of some drives and adapters. The spring isn't bent, the corners of where it was notched out to attach to the frame were left sharp. Flattening the spring causes the sharp edges to bend downward where the spring narrows, however, due to the angle it isn't a problem when inserting drives, only removing them. Exercise caution when removing drives.

5 out of 5 eggsBest I've had

Pros: Solid latching system
No USBs or other added connectors
Full body chassis - a lot of docks barely stay together until you get them into a case a bolted down. Not this one.
I don't use it much for what I do but I suppose if you are going to leave a drive in it long term the switchable fan and fan speed on the front is a plus.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I always like to have a dock in my work and home systems since I'm a "computer guy" seems I always need to quickly look at or copy off a drive. Been through a lot of docks. Some were very nice looking, others very industrial looking, yet they all failed.
Some just quit being seem by the computer, others with add on USB ports, the ports failed, while others just died mechanically. Doors stopped latching closed, or worse, wouldn't open.
I've had this dock in my work system for a good while now and along with a EZConvert MB882SP-1S-2B for 2.5 drives I am totally impressed. I'm back ordering a second one for home.

5 out of 5 eggsNice mobile rack

Pros: I replaced two older mobile racks that had noisy fans with these ICY DOCK mobile racks. They work great, and are super quiet. Nice fit, and easy install.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: After using many different mobile racks in the past, I have to say this is by far the best I have seen. Superb built quality with great functionality. Installation was a snap-working perfect so far.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsAWESOME!

Pros: +Separate on/off switch
+Fan controller
+80mm fan (with an option to install a 120mm fan- AWESOME)
+Tray-less drive mechanism

Cons: It took three days to get here!

Other Thoughts: I had to replace another ICY DOCK mobile rack that I've had for years because it couldn't support drives larger than 2TB. I originally purchased a pair of StarTech HSB110SATBK's, and a word of advice about those- stay clear of them: they are noisy as heck and the front panel LCD screen lacks any useful utility. The fan for them is actually louder than my whole system! The rack won't work unless you lock it- dumb.

Anyhow, I saw a review of these on another website and immediately ordered a pair. One was DOA and is in the process of being RMA'd, but the other works just fine.

Since I use these in a system that's on top of my desk and like 2' from my right ear, I REALLY needed something quiet, and boy I tell you- THESE THINGS ARE QUIET! Even with the fan speed at max, I can't even hear it operate! I think installing a larger 80mm fan (as opposed to the usual 20mm/25mm type), is a great idea as you get max cooling without the noise!

However, when I put these two racks in my case, one atop the other, I noticed that there wasn't much of a gap between them, so it'll be interesting to see if the top drive gets significantly warmer than the bottom drive, which has an empty slot beneath it. So far, the bottom drive is much cooler in the ICY DOCK rack compared to the StarTech.

The entire drive door/ejection system seems pretty solid. My other ICY DOCK rack never had any issues and I don't expect these to either.

Otherwise, this product is the cat's meow, and I am considering buying 2 or 3 more for my other PCs.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great and Quiet

Pros: Very quiet, easy to use, pretty blue indicator LED, trayless

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace a tray system from another company that had a fan that became annoyingly loud. So far I have had no problems with this item.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent product

Pros: Solid construction
Looks great
Quiet fan
Fan control
Power button
Blue LED is not overly bright

Cons: None thus far...

Other Thoughts: I have owned this unit for a few months now and have to say Icy Dock really has come up with a beautifully designed product. The unit has this wonderful over-engineered feel to it, and I mean that in the most positive sense. It looks and feels like it will still be going strong decades from now. Really love the solid click it makes when latching and how it auto-ejects when opening.

The fan is quiet even at full speed (I installed it in what is a near silent system and the turbo swap does not stand out or make itself known while in use). The fan control is a nice addition (though for me this feature was one of those features that are nice to know it's there if you need it, but I haven't used besides just initially playing with it). The power button on the other hand I've found I use all the time. It's actually quite handy when you don't necessarily want to take the drive out, but don't need it spinning and wasting power either. I like the mellow blue led, always nice when manufacturers don't use obnoxiously bright leds.

Also, for those who may have cases which have front clearance limitations (such as a cover), the lock sticks past the unit 1/8 of an inch, and the lever sticks out 3/16 of an inch, so 3/16 of an inch should be considered the minimum clearance required. However, because the 5.25 bays have a little play to start with you might get away with just having an 1/8" of clearance. Measurements were made with a tape measure vs. say something like a caliper, but should be quite close. I was able to install this unit in the Corsair Obsidian 550D (it will push in on and permanently indent the foam front panel but not actually hit the door at all - a near perfect fit).

There might be other products that will do the job for less, but there is something to be said for going with a company that produces such a fine product. After trying out a few of Icy Dock's offerings I will certainly keep them in mind for future needs as well.

Icy Dock, if you're listening, you might want to consider adding clearance details to your spec sheet. I even called you guys and couldn't get an answer :). Almost cost you guys a couple of sales and me a couple of seriously sweet docks :). Not worth losing sales over not including that info.

5 out of 5 eggsSo Nice!

Pros: I've had alot of hot swap units over the years, and I'm loving this one so far.

There are lots of plastic bays out there, these are all metal, take the BARE drive into it, no mounting the drive into a sled first! Loving it since I am sometimes shuffling dozens of drives around during a project.

The other to great features are the included fan and the fan speed control. And a Cool feature I've never had on a swap bay is that it has a Power Button on it. This is nice for Data drives that I don't always need access to, so they can stay installed but be turned off to conserve power, heat, and drive life.

I picked up a couple of these and now will be getting a few more in my next upgrade.

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: Recap:
All Metal Everything
Power Button
Onboard Fan and Fan speed control
Locking Door
Nice Ejecting Hinge Assembly
TRAYLESS - Bare Drive Insertion

5 out of 5 eggsIcy dock turbo swap mobile rack

Pros: All metal, rugged, fan speed control, works with tool-less drive bay. Has both a sata data and power connection. Quiet fan, doesn't spin with no drive inserted.
Power on/off button.

Cons: Nothing yet really. The front panel uses a powder coating-based paint and if you rub it with your finger, you have fine dust left behind. One of my drives is a little hard to insert, but a second one of exactly the same type goes in easily.

Other Thoughts: Works great so far. Rugged enough that when I insert my 3.5" heavy metal
drives, I don't feel like I am going to break anything. I looked thru all the offerings on Newegg, I think this was the best overall feature/value offered.
