5 out of 5 eggsFANTASTIC 2.5" to 3.5" Caddies/Converters

This review is from: ICY DOCK MB382SP-3B ICY DOCK EZConvert Air Open Air 2.5” to 3.5” SATA SSD & HDD Converter / Mounting Kit

Pros: They convert SSD drives to a 3.5" form factor. These particular caddies are mostly metal and sturdy, easy to use, and provide an open air body for better cooling within a drive bay enclosure. The SSD drive can be snapped quickly and securely into the frame or permanently mounted into the frame using screws. Once in the frame it can be treated like ANY 3.5 SATA drive to be permanently mounted within a system case OR they can be used in removable hard drive bays (see "other comments" below).

Cons: None so far. They do as advertised.

Other Thoughts: These caddies save the day for those who want to use SSD drives as removable drives (not permanently mounted within a system case). There are many good reasons to make drives removable (including drives other than SSD)...such as using multiple operating systems on a single computer or using different drives for data storage or archives. Another good reason is when using RAID configurations, especially "mirrored" RAIDS (RAID 1). Using removable hard drives makes for easy maintenance when a failed drive must be replaced/rebuilt. These 3.5" form factor caddies allow an SSD drive to fit in any drive bay designed for easy insertion/extraction of hard drives (see examples such as NewEgg part numbers N82E16817990001 or 9SIA8HV32N1824). Basically ANY drive bay rack compatible with a 3.5" drive (SSD or SATA). I still use such configurations with older hard drives in removable racks using an IDE interface. It adds to the cost to configure a system in such a manner but the flexibility it creates is phenomenal.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Happy

This review is from: ICY DOCK MB382SP-3B ICY DOCK EZConvert Air Open Air 2.5” to 3.5” SATA SSD & HDD Converter / Mounting Kit

Pros: Looks good but does not hold up under a little use.

Cons: Cleverly designed locking mechanism did last very long and now the data interface is inoperative.

1 out of 5 eggsSeemed to Work for A While

This review is from: ICY DOCK MB382SP-3B ICY DOCK EZConvert Air Open Air 2.5” to 3.5” SATA SSD & HDD Converter / Mounting Kit

Pros: It did exactly what I bought it for. Make a 2.5" SSD fit nicely into a 3.5" drive bay. It converted the power and SATA connectors for use in a desktop. This mainly means that it used a 4 pin molex connector for power instead of the thin SATA power connector.

Cons: In my AMD Sabertooth motherboard (running Fedora 20; but the OS didn't matter), the BIOS in the Sabertooth started failing to see the drive. I finally was able to isolate to either the drive or the ICY dock. Connected the SSD directly to the motherboard (removed the ICY dock) and didn't have an issue. So, I think the ICY dock was the problem.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great fits my ssd's perfectly

This review is from: ICY DOCK MB382SP-3B ICY DOCK EZConvert Air Open Air 2.5” to 3.5” SATA SSD & HDD Converter / Mounting Kit

Pros: I'm using this adapter with 2 different ssds that are in raid1 that hold the OS's for my home server.

These adapters are mounted in an icydock mb155sp hotswap bay to allow for easy removal and changing if one was to die. So far they've worked perfectly and I have not needed to touch them!

Cons: Slightly expensive, but the quality is worth the price!

5 out of 5 eggsGets the job done very nicely

This review is from: ICY DOCK MB382SP-3B ICY DOCK EZConvert Air Open Air 2.5” to 3.5” SATA SSD & HDD Converter / Mounting Kit

Pros: In June 2014 I bought a 2.5-inch SSD that I wanted to use as an internal drive on a Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon computer. To do that I needed a converter to make it 3.5-inch, so I bought one of these at the same time. This Icy Dock does a fine job, and seems very well made.

Cons: No problems at all.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent for tool-less systems

This review is from: ICY DOCK MB382SP-3B ICY DOCK EZConvert Air Open Air 2.5” to 3.5” SATA SSD & HDD Converter / Mounting Kit

Pros: -Sturdy Stainless steel construction
-Easy to install HDD/ SSD
-EXACT HDD hole/ connector placement
-Allows air to flow to the drive.
-Perfect for computers/ servers with hotswappable and or tool-less hard drive bays that require perfect alignment.

Cons: I guess the (interior) connector is a bit tight. No where near terrible, and it helps keep the drive in place. Definitely not worth taking a egg off for. Just mentioning it.

Other Thoughts: I baught this for use in my Alienware Area-51 to hold my SSD in place. The case uses a tool-less quick connecting desdign that requres you to press the hard drive down (this puts the pins in the HDD) and it locks in place. It doesnt work with 2.5" drives by default (they just sit there on the connector)

Problem with most 2.5" - 3.5" connectors is that they do not line the SATA connectors up properly. (Either centered, or slightly off) Now, if you use cables to attatch your drives, this isnt a issue, but my system has hard set connectors in the bays, so alignment is crucial. This is one of the only drives that advertises exact placement. Every hole and connector is the same as a standard HDD

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

This review is from: ICY DOCK MB382SP-3B ICY DOCK EZConvert Air Open Air 2.5” to 3.5” SATA SSD & HDD Converter / Mounting Kit

Pros: Installed a PNY 240 Gb SSD in a 2007 iMac and worked like a charm. The drive was extremely easy to install in the converter and is held in tightly. Shouldn't need much ventilation for an SSD, but there is plenty of room for air flow.

Cons: The converter case did not allow the temperature sensor to be installed directly on the drive and had to be installed on the converter case, but not worried about heat from the SSD.

Other Thoughts: Originally got a 2.5" to 3.5" drive adapter, but that's not what's needed for installing a SSD in an iMac.
