1 out of 5 eggsBuilt cheap!

Pros: Simple, has two SATA data cable ports and gets power via a Molex power connector. Doors are locked with an included mini screwdriver. That said read on…

Cons: Rosewill products have never given me reason to be negative, I own several of their products, and when I found this item I thought I was buying with confidence BUT this item changes my opinion. When I took this mobile bay out of the box it was like a baby being born into a bad world SCREAMING to be put back in (and returned), this mobile bay is made CHEAP! One of the more important parts inside this unit is the ejector lever which helps pop the hard drive away from the power and data ports internally; this one is NOT made of metal but rather PLASTIC and is begging to be broken. The doors hinges are molded of plastic and could be easily broken were they attach to a metal pin (the hinges are a thin molded design). If you are looking for a dual bay mobile rack like this one and plan to actually change the drives often then I sincerely recommend you look elsewhere. Maybe this bay will suffice if you do NOT plan to be constantly swapping hard drives and mind the TLC.

Other Thoughts: I had just purchased another unit very similar to this one which included USB 3.0 ports for a different build where I needed additional front panel USB 3.0 ports. That unit is made of METAL parts, including the ejector lever, mechanisms, and doors. The body of the mobile rack is an open air design instead of a closed case design requiring a cooling fan like this one (reminds me of the mobile racks with internal trays that need cooling fans). The build this mobile rack was purchased for did not need additional USB ports so was a perfect choice, all things considered. I’m looking for a replacement and recommend you do the same.

1 out of 5 eggsWorks, but there are errors you don't know about

Pros: Cheap and appears to work

Cons: I used this to add a hard drive to a FreeNAS server. Everything appeared to work just fine, and I never would have known the difference if FreeNAS didn't send me automatic emails when it detects something strange in the logs. The SATA connection from the outside of this box to the hard drive inside randomly has read/write errors - a lot of them. You never notice this problem because the SATA protocol or whatever just retries the command until it works. I hooked the drive up directly without this box and all the "cam status uncorrectable parity/crc error" messages are gone. I'm sure the performance of the drive will be better - but more importantly I'll stop getting nuisance emails from my FreeNAS server and only get them when there are real problems that need attention.

4 out of 5 eggsConvenient if it weren't so loud

Pros: - Convenient for tech work - testing/wiping/imaging hard drives
- Nice design (lockable, swing-open doors, indicator LEDs, colors)

Cons: - Fan is loud (high-pitched whine), no adjustments
- Molex power connector... for SATA drives?
- Non-standard mounting screws (they are included tho)
- Feels a bit flimsy, but haven't broken it yet

Other Thoughts: - Trying for a silent PC. The fan in this bay is louder than anything else in my computer, and even makes a distinct high-pitched sound. The fan is permanent on with no adjustment (or off) available. I had to unplug it. Removing the side panel to restore power to this bay defeats the purpose of hot swap. With this fan, there really should have been an off-switch included. In my use case, the bay will be empty most of the time anyway.
- Since this is a SATA bay, it would only make sense for this to take SATA power. But it takes molex power. This bay is the only reason I have a molex cable plugged into my modular power supply, and there is a SATA power connector dangling near the bay. I will probably get a SATA power to molex adapter so I can get rid of the molex run.
- This drive takes non-standard (smaller-diameter fine-thread) screws. My case came with thumb screws for 5.25" drives for tool-less install/removal. I have them on my optical drive, but I couldn't use them with this bay because of it's oddball size.

4 out of 5 eggsCheap at $15 and reliable

Pros: It is made so light that the first impression is that it will break but the lightness comes for the best part about this device. There is no circuitry as in switching IC's that can only slow down the Drives or fail because they are extra unneeded parts!

Cons: A tad flimsy in the door area but acceptable since they are the only company that makes these directly power able with SATA cables from the motherboard.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat product idea

Pros: This is a great idea since i have so many old drives around that i can just use to store and transfer old data.
easy to pop them in and out. Hot plug and play is awesome when your MB supports it. read about it on wikipedia if you are not sure

Cons: Not a problem with the product, but i am waiting for cheap SSD's to experience some shock during installation and ruin the drive. i have had this problem with inexpensive OCZ drives before in other situations, so I would be careful which drives you use this with

5 out of 5 eggspretty dang cool

Pros: makes life a whole lot easier for connecting a hard drive to your computer.

Cons: a little chinsy, does not affect performance tho

Other Thoughts: i got this rack so i could put all my pictures from several different hard drives on to one. works great! sooooo much better than opening up the computer every time to connect a hard drive. and a lot cleaner than a docking station on your desk......ive already got enough junk on my desk anyway!

4 out of 5 eggsGood Unit, but for Home Use Only

Pros: No unfiltered front grill
Cooling fan
Price
Locks (to keep toddlers out)
Easy drive insertion
No complicated backplane, just SATA pass-thru to mobo

Cons: No on/off switch
Drive extraction is wonky
Fan is always-on. SHOULD only run when drive inserted.
Build quality is for light-duty use only
Molex power plug (hardly a deal breaker, but what are they thinking?)

Other Thoughts: This unit appears to be a re-worked StarTech HSB2535SATBK selling for half the price. I have thus far used it with an 8tb Seagate 3.5" drive only. Hot-plugs, because my motherboard allows this. Most newish ones do. If yours is older then check your chipset specs or get an add-on SATA card. The doors push closed just fine. But opening the door with a drive inserted requires sticking a finger in (to support the hinge, just in case) and once open giving the drive a slight shake with fingertip, at which time it pops right out. The LED's register activity and are a bit bright, but are not the awful super-bright ones. Fan noise is unnoticeable in my 5-fan case. 40/60mm fans always get loud with time, but it appears to just slip out the top of unit for later removal/replacement. Doors lock by way of any small screwdriver (included), which is good for home use. No keys to keep track of, but toddler-safe. Not secure against any real intruder. I hope for long-life but don't feel at all confident that I will see it. Especially due to the wonky drive extraction, but it's cheap and works fine for now. Time will tell.
