1 out of 5 eggsNot dependable

Pros: Intermitten operation, BSOD, etc. went crazy looking for virus & malware. HDD worked fine when used in another rack. Looking to return just after 4 months.

Cons: Internal connectors failed

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsAn OK Deal

Pros: *Easy Install
*Good Quality
*Good Price
*Get full speed from drive as compared to USB ext.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Haven't used these before. Pretty straightforward install. Works just fine, drives insert and remove nicely, lights work.

4 out of 5 eggsMostly fine, a few annoyances

Pros: Easy front access to hard drives, does exactly what you would expect it to do.

Cons: The status/activity light requires using an (included) SATA+proprietary to Molex power adapter, so if you want to use SATA power natively, you will get no activity lights. No idea why they did that rather than tying the lights into the SATA power on the PCB.

This product is sold by several manufacturers (I've bought a couple over the years), and they all use the exact same key, so don't expect any sort of security.

Other Thoughts: Downward tension is kept by a wire loop, and some hard drives (WDs mostly) have a stiff lip that will get caught on it when removing. Wiggling usually gets it out, otherwise a small screwdriver can push the loop up to remove.

This product requires it to be attached to the 5.25" bay with screws, so if your case is completely toolless, it may not work. However, many cases today are toolless but have backup screw holes which will work here.

Hotplug capability depends on your motherboard and OS (hint: it probably won't work). I like combining these with a "USB A Female to USB Motherboard 4 Pin Header F/F" adapter and a "USB to SATA HDD Bridge" adapter to make a completely internal (and hotplug) USB SATA bay.

1 out of 5 eggsDied

Pros: Just what I was looking for; everyone else seems happy with it. Maybe I just got a bad egg.

Cons: Died after 5 HDD swaps ... lasted just long enough for me to get comfortable with it and throw away the packaging.

Other Thoughts: Shall I try again?

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsSuper Device

Pros: Easy to install, Works with no problems, Quality not to bad. Would buy again at these prices.

Cons: Not really a true hot swap, Have to reboot to recognize drives when changed out . But does make it easy to change storage drives like large movie drives.

Other Thoughts: Have 4 of these that i installed on 3 seperate cpu's in the house. All work very good for front load access, without having to open cpu case to change out movie storage drives.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic piece of hardware!

Pros: Sturdy yet simple construction, well thought-out and executed design. Extremely useful for all types of disc operations with external SATA drives. If you have drivers that allow hot swapping on your SATA connectors, it even gets better. Have found absolutely NO limitations as to what this device can do for disc work.

Cons: None, zero, zilch!!!

Other Thoughts: Since I got this device over a year ago, system backups have become extremely fast and easy. Have even used it to perform dual boot jobs between 2 drives. The potentials are almost limitless. Don't know how I ever got along without it and can't feature how bleak the future would be without it.

5 out of 5 eggsWill buy more if I have the need

Pros: Easy mounting, easy operation, drive held in place very firmly, lock is independent of door latch, door assists in loading the drive during insertion and ejecting the drive (about an inch) during extraction.

Noise/vibration dampening: Two metal arms attach the main unit to metal posts on each mounting rail. The arms are isolated from the posts by silicone grommets. This makes the unit feel flimsy in hand but it's quite solid once mounted.

Cons: Just barely a con: Power/in-use LED not integrated; must be manually connected during installation from the back of unit via a supplemental connector on the included SATA to molex power adapter. (This will not be a problem for most people but it was for me; see *Other thoughts* for further info.)

Other Thoughts: Works flawlessly with my new full-height Western Digital drive and my new half-ish-height Seagate drive.

Lock works smoothly upon quick test/examination but I have no ongoing use for it.

The drive is held in place VERY tightly by the closed door. Because of this, the door latch is under a lot of tension when closed on a drive. To save wear on the latch, push in on the left edge of the door with your thumb to relieve the tension before pulling open the latch with your index finger.

Con explanation: I'm using the unit with a Rosewill SATA to IDE adapter to connect to an IDE controller on an older motherboard. The adapter connects right up to the SATA connection on the back of the unit with no problem but this config also prevents me from connecting the power/in-use indicator LED so no pretty light for me.

5 out of 5 eggsLike Butter

Pros: Easy install, more open improves cooling. Simple. Effective solution. Cheap.

Cons: Nada. I've had no issues with the door being flimsy and don't care that the led is a bit bright at night.

Other Thoughts: Just as I was about to 'pull the trigger' on a build I found a used system - 1 yr old - w/extras, really cheap. Blew it out and saved at least $300 and only caveat is no DDR3 & old card. Using this 'tray' I use 7 Prem, 7 Home and can use XP to game on only 2 GB of ram (older games). It's slick. Did I say like butter?
