1 out of 5 eggsNot good

Pros: Good idea

Cons: One of the bays quickly stopped working. . .very annoying, garbage. Bought it to save time and space, wasted money and time in the end.

4 out of 5 eggsVery convenient

Pros: Fits two drives simultaneously in a single bay. Convenient for temporarily connecting drives.

I have this motherboard with an Intel ICH7 storage controller that doesn't support AHCI, so I can't do true hotplugging with this dock. However, if you install the freeware HotSwap! utility (google it), you can get pretty close: When you want to remove a drive, just click the HotSwap systray icon and pick the drive from the menu. When you plug in a new drive, just right-click the same icon and pick "Scan for hardware changes."

Cons: My SATA cables would constantly fall off, because there's nothing on the dock to grip the connectors in place like you would find on a SATA hard drive. I had to buy combo SATA data/power cables from OKGEAR which stayed in place more securely.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

Pros: This dock is great for backing up drives; both 2.5" & 3.5"!
Laptop drives stick out about 5/8", are held secure, and are easy to remove. 3.5" drives stick out about 1/2 way and are less secure. I love being able to pop in a drive without installing in an enclosure. The drive bays have separate power buttons on the front. I've owned my 1st one for over a year. I was recently looking for a dual 2.5" drive enclosure when I found out that the 3.5" bay also accepts 2.5" drives. Wow, how did I miss that!?! So, I recently bought a 2nd unit for another of my backup computers.

Cons: None really. I wouldn't use it for drives permanently installed in a computer; especially the 3.5" bay.

Other Thoughts: I've bought Startech equipment for many years and I don't remember ever being disappointed.

4 out of 5 eggsawesome product

Pros: It is easy to mount in the 5.25 drive bays. it is easy to plug the SATA data cables to. It has power for each drive bay separately controlable via front buttons. I put two in most cases unless there are already built in drive bays then only one

Cons: The two SATA power connectors are very close together. It is a bit tricky to put SATA power plugs into the unit but only because there are two and they are very close together. That is most likely why they provide a molex 4 pin break away. It is still able to be done with SATA just a bit more tedious.

Other Thoughts: I will buy this over and over it is an awesome product. It could be better it could be worse. Personally I love being able to have as many SATA external drive's as I want. It is limited only by how many SATA ports you have on your mother board.

3 out of 5 eggsNo Power Buttons

Pros: I have one that has been working great for a year. Power off the drive, swap it out, put in the new one and power it up. Very convenient.

Cons: 2 more arrived today for 2 more computers since the 1 I have is working so well. NO POWER BUTTONS ON ONE OF THEM. Not damaged - the buttons were not in the sealed plastic back with the unit; defective as in the manufacturer forgot to put them on. No way to turn the drives off and on to swap the drives. I paid a reasonable amount for them and shipping was also reasonable for the 2 of them. The shipping cost on the RMA more than the cost to ship the 2 originally from NewEgg. How is shipping 2 cheaper than shipping 1?

Other Thoughts: I don't know - do we consider 2 out of 3 devices purchased in working order a bad average? I will give it 3 stars because the, now 2, that I have that are complete work good.

3 out of 5 eggsAddendum to rewview

Pros: see review below

Cons: see review below

Other Thoughts: Shook the box and 2 Molex to SATA converters fell out (each with a SATA cable). So /IF/ you have 2 molex connetors (it turns out that I'm using mine for other stuff, so I still lose, but want to correct the record), the fit in the back is ok (no more aggravating than the SATA connectors on mobos).

3 out of 5 eggsGreat idea hampered by poor implementation

Pros: Very useful accessory. Allows a 2.5 /and/ 3.5 SATA HDDs in use at the same time in a single 5.25 drive slot.

Cons: Various aspects of the design are brain-dead. I didn't quite get what gaulfinger said about the mount holes. Because the device is so short, there is only a single mount hole for the rail, which means if you don't have this resting on a flat surface (ie, at the bottom of the case or on top of something like a CD/DVD drive), the device will rotate around the mounting hole if you apply *any* torque to it (hard not to do if you push in a drive that is not inline with the mount hole). The other option would be to glue a rail to it (if your case uses rails). The next is the SATA connectors. They are *so* close that you must use the SATA connector at the end of the PSU cable. If you are lucky and it terminates at in-line with the SATA power connector, it will be a snug fit. If you are unlucky (like me), and it terminates at the SIDE of the connector, expect a little bending (because the wires will press against the other SATA connector). Don't even think of using the middle ones.

Other Thoughts: Plastic is low grade, and the power LEDs are VERY bright. Both drives will stick out of the casing (there is no "eject" button, so you use the exposed portion to pull the drive out). One positive design feature is that the flaps do completely close the drive hole when there is no drive in the hole.

3 out of 5 eggsPretty handy

Pros: Simply creates a convenient place to plug your drives into. It's just parallels the sata and power connections that you plug into it so it may lock up your system depending on if your motherboard supports hot swapping or not.

Cons: It would have been better with an internal usb interface as the constant lockups require pc reboots.
