The StarTech UNIDUPDOCK is an easy to use, versatile tool that functions as a standalone drive copying/imaging solution or an external drive docking station. When used as standalone duplicator, this unit enables duplication from SATA to SATA, IDE to SATA or SATA to IDE, and IDE to IDE, as long as the source drive does not exceed the size of the destination drive at a speed up to 72MBps. A built in LCD screen display duplication progress and reports error information. When used as universal docking station, this unit connects to a host computer via USB 2.0 allowing direct access to hard drive contents. Large capacity drives (tested with up to 4TB 3.5" and 1TB 2.5" drives per bay) can be used to greatly enhance your computer's storage/backup capabilities. A small form factor design ensures maximum heat dissipation for the exposed drives, and makes it a great choice for the on-site service technicians.

5 out of 5 eggsPretty good

Pros: Works as advertised, one device for all the HD's you own, simple operation

Cons: Transfer speed is slower than expected but still good. It took me about 4-5 hours to copy a 500GB drive.

4 out of 5 eggsNot Bad

Pros: 1. All the cables you need.
2. Small/light weight
3. Easy to use
4. 1:1 works well.

Cons: 1. Expensive
2. Could be quicker considering the technology out there and the price.

Other Thoughts: First one my work purchased had to be RMA'd. Customer Support at StarTech is not the best.

4 out of 5 eggsIt works fine so far

Pros: SATA to SATA worked perfectly first time. The image worked fine with very little work from me. I just pushed a button and walked away. When I came back I removed the new drive and put it in the PC and came up back up.

Cons: #1 is this thing is bulky and cumbersome but is the only duplicator I could find at a "reasonable" price to clone also IDE drives. Second is it doesn't read ALL drives. I tried to image IDE to IDE and it only read 1 drive of 2. I am still looking for another IDE drive to use as I have a computer to image.
#2 this duplicator doesn't recognize all drives.....
#3 when I imaged a computer for my client... I saw the welcome screen come up and shut it down - then marked it as complete. Customer called back and said it doesn't work. Well lol, I had to MERGE partitions together and I didn't know that. After that it works great. (noted :p)

Other Thoughts: I am a tech and work on computers all the time. I'd say this thing would help me about 2-3/5 jobs where a new hard drive would be required. I bought it using my customers payments. Not TOO much of a loss. It's definitely MUCH easier to image drives. I will definitely put it to a HUGE test a few times in the year.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Pleased

Pros: 1. It has all the cables needed, no matter where you are.
2. Easy to use.

Cons: Seriously! I am on my third attempt to get this to work once! First time, using two 250GB hdd's SATA, when I went to copy it would keep telling me Drive not exist. Second attempt much better but I gave up because after 2 hours it was still at 1% copied on a 40GB HDD SATA! Third attempt is so far not any better... I will let it run over night, which completely defeats the purpose of ordering it.

Other Thoughts: As of right now I say do not try this product. I will however change my review if I have to RMA it and the second works fine.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid This Product

Pros: Nice Package Design

Cons: The unit when cloning IDE drives will only copy the first partition and stop,
i.e. It ignores all remaining partitions. If the source and destination drives are
totally identical, i.e. Both the same capacity, model, & manufacturer, the unit
will 'hang' (no copying) and must be reset or turned off/on to again access the
menus. The display has poor contrast and is difficult to read off angle. During
the copying process, the display is basically unreadable, i.e. To determine the
status of the copying (percent completion & time remaining). The unit is
incompatible with solid state drives, i.e. It won't identify/find IDE SSDs.
No tests were done with SATA drives, but most likely the same problems will
occur as the application firmware is most likely the same for both IDEs and SATAs.
For copying IDE drives, a better choice is to use a software application than this
unit even though potentially more involved. At least then the drive will be copied
properly. Other/better

1 out of 5 eggsReview update

Pros: Just found a PDF file of the instructions online at the manufacturers web-site and it goes into a little more detail than the brief instructions that come with the unit. IF YOU HOLD DOWN THE 'ESC' BUTTON FOR 3 SECONDS, A HIDDEN MENU APPEARS! There is no mention of this in the manual that comes with the unit and it is NOT intuitive. The hidden menu gives you the options to disable the RAID option, to disable the rescanning of drives at the beginning of the copy process, and the option to do a QUICK ERASE is hidden in there as well, that simply takes advantage of the manufacturers quick erase function if they included it in the firmware of the drive. Do a search for HDDERASE.EXE to learn more about it. It can erase the data in seconds, rather than the hours other utilities require.

Cons: You have to figure this thing out for yourself, and at this price, that is unacceptable.

Other Thoughts: Even as a technician with more than 20 years of professional experience, not much about this device was intuitive and there is no need to HIDE a menu option. Anyone who can figure out how to use this won't be hindered, scared or cause harm by the hidden menu, which is why it should NOT have been hidden to begin with. Even if the device had some writing on it to indicate there was a hidden menu, or if the instructions included some advice to go to the web-site to download the PDF for more detailed instructions and stated it was just a 'quick start' guide and not a full manual, I could better understand why they did this. But as it stands today, it makes no sense and other people who have purchased this unit, based on previous reviews here alone, have no idea to this day that the hidden menu even exists.

1 out of 5 eggsSave your money

Pros: Can clone SATA to IDE or IDE to SATA as long as the destination drive is as big as (or bigger) than the size of the source drive, regardless of how much data is on the drive.

Cons: It took one hour and 37 minutes to clone a Seagate 320GB SATA HDD to a Western Digital 500GB SATA HDD. The Cavalry Dual USB Dock did the same job in 38 minutes and sells here for one-third the price. This unit only supports USB 2, where the previously mentioned Cavalry unit supports USB 3. While the Cavalry doesn't support IDE drives, it is much, much faster and much cheaper and, therefore, the better value. There does not appear to be any downloads, past or present, at the manufacturers web-site to update the firmware of this device, although the unit makes it a point to display its firmware version every time you turn it on, but what's the point if there is only one version you could possibly have? The instructions say the option to ERASE is availablt, but no such option exists in reality.

Other Thoughts: This device supports using the drives in a RAID configuration, which makes no sense to me since there will be no speed benefit with a severely limited USB 2 connection to the PC. The device detects the drives that are plugged into it when you first turn it on, and then when you push the button to copy the drives, it re-detects the drives all over again, which is just a waste of time and unnecessary/redundant. It seems finicky over which drives it will detect. The SATA connectors are on the edges, opposite of each other, which means you need a lot more desk space to use this thing. The IDE connectors are where the SATA connectors SHOULD have been placed, IMO, so that the drives could sit in a 'cartridge-like' fashion, as in other USB SATA docks. It was nice that they included power cables for Europe and UK power outlets.

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't work for me...

Pros: portable, no pc needed

Cons: Not reliable in a field where reliability is key. Very slow compared to other methods. 160gb drive takes around 1hr, when it works.

Other Thoughts: Some 3.5 in drives copied fine but sometimes it would hang, all my 2.5 in drives never copied, would lose HDD connection as if they were removed. Will send back and continue using a software imager instead.

3 out of 5 eggsFunctional, but slow

Pros: Its setup well to accommodate a lot of drive options and seems to recognize drives accurately and well. Also servers as a nice hard drive case/adapter to connect a drive to another system via USB to see whats on it.

Cons: Its just slow duplicating drives. To duplicate a 500GB drive took almost 3 hours. In the end it was much easier to use a software boot application like Acronis True Image or other such drive imaging software which takes about 15 minutes tops. I had trouble getting past a 3 hour dupe time.
