The SATDOCK2520 3.5in SATA Mobile Rack lets you install two 2.5in SATA (SATA, SATA II, SATA III-6Gbps) hard drives (HDD) or solid state drives (SSD) into an available/unused 3.5in floppy drive bay.

The mobile rack delivers quick and easy access to hard drive contents, using a convenient "no mounting required /easy eject" feature (much like a tape cartridge or floppy disk) that eliminates the need for the drives to be installed in a tray - a time-saving solution for instant drive removals and insertions as part of a system building process or integration into rackmount systems or industrial environments.

For added security, the mobile rack is equipped with locking bay doors to prevent unauthorized removal of the swappable hard drives. Also a perfect addition for operating system image deployment and any task that requires being able to access large volumes of data on the fly, the hot swap bay provides everything you need to expedite important projects while maintaining a reliable storage solution.

  • newegg Add up to two 2.5" SATA drives in a single 3.5" drive bay The StarTech SATDOCK2520 enables two 2.5in 2.5" SATA drives or SSD to be installed into any free 3.5in drive bay without need of tray, caddy or carrier. This enclosure has an insertion cycle rating exceeding 15000 cycles, providing a reliable HDD/SSD swapping solution.
  • newegg Easy replace/removal The "no mounting required /easy eject" feature enables quick and easy replace/removal of drives.
  • newegg Lockable drive doors The mobile rack is equipped with locking bay doors that add peace of mind and drive security.

1 out of 5 eggsEjector problems with thin drives

Pros: Clean design for its price. Works fine with older thicker 2.5" drives. Lever arm is fragile but expected for the price, so I'm not docking it points for that.

Cons: Ejector mechanism lever arm pushes above the sata connector instead of the far side. The arm completely fails for thin drives (e.g. 6.8mm height)... it just swipes over the top of the drive and thus cannot eject it.

Other Thoughts: I really like the design except for the lever-arm problem. Unfortunately the lever-arm problem makes the unit virtually unusable, because thin drives are more the standard height now.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate from previous post

Pros: This is an update to my post from 4/29/2012 5:20:59 PM. I noted updates with "Updates".
It does what it's supposed to do. It accomodates my SSD drives perfectly, even the slightly oversized (thick) OCZ drives.
Please see "Other thoughts" for the brand of drives used.

Update: SATA-III COMPATIBLE ONLY - NOT, I repeat NOT, SATA-III performance. I benchmarked 375MB/s (or around 3.0Gbps). If anyone has any other updates, please post. I noted this on another StarTech model:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817998040 - Same benchmarks. If anyone else has encountered this, I am sure our other users would like to know.

Cons: The smaller traditional 2.5" spin drives have issues ejecting. Not very good for the ultra compact 2.5" spin drives.

The latch and lock are kind of flimsy. Use a bit of caution and not a lot of force.

Update: SATA-III compatible only - not SATA-III performance.

Other Thoughts: Great for SSD drives. Not so great for traditional spin drives.
Verify that either ACHI and/or RAID features are enabled to use the hotswap features.

I have plugged in Crucial, OCZ, and Kingston SSD drives in this unit. They plug in and eject perfectly well.
I have plugged in Western Digital and Seagate traditional spin drives in this unit. They go in very easily - they do NOT come out easily.
My recommendation is to stick with SSD drives.

3 out of 5 eggsMissleading Specs

Pros: Works.

Cons: I bought this to replace the HSB220SAT25B which is sata II only. The specs on this item say it is sata III compatible. When I got the drive bay the manual says it is only sata 3.0Gb/s which is only sata II. :(

Other Thoughts: The HSB220SAT25B is a better drive mechanically for taking drives in and out frequently.

4 out of 5 eggsmeh

Pros: >>does what its designed to do

Cons: >>HD levers are a little on the flimsy side, but really not too bad.
>>SATA connector is placed a little low, sure would be sweet if I could put it in my case without the use of HD brackets... should have paid closer attention to that.

Other Thoughts: >>really is a nice product, just make sure it fits in your case. Pay attention to the wiring.
