5 out of 5 eggsNAS is fast

Pros: Easy to install HDDs easy to format, software was easy to use

Cons: It was documented as using a hardcoded IP but really was using DHCP so was a bit of early confusion

1 out of 5 eggsNot worth the trouble

Pros: Has good specs

Cons: Lots of software bugs. Serious issues with the exfat filesystem and smb protocol.
- unallocated clusters
- invalid clusters
- invalid FAT entries
- empty files marked as contiguous
- recursive directories!
- SMB uses *deprecated* cifs authentication mode limiting interoperability

Useful as write-only memory - don't expect to retreive 100% of what you store.

2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't support >147GB file size

Pros: Cheap
Supports 3/4TB drives

Cons: Doesn't Support >147GB file size

Other Thoughts: I've been using NAS systems from every manufacturer ever since I can remember, from the older LACIE GIGABIT units to the latest Synology/QNap systems. I thought I would give these inexpensive 2 drive units a try to replace some older Netgear 4 drive systems. Installed 3TB NAS drives for RAID 1 protection but quickly found that it wouldn't accept any file over 147GB in size! I emailed Tech Support. 2 Weeks later they tell me its a limitation of SMB which I promptly told them that is not correct there is no limit for Linux Samba SMB for file size and their EXT4 or XFS file system they are using on the NAS doesn't have a size limit either. Netgear, Synology, QNAP, Buffalo, Lacie all can support >147GB, but StarTech at this time CANNOT! This is a major problem for larger backup files and for storing VHD files which cannot be split.
