Like the superheroes of old, the AMD Phenom streaks out of the night to lay waste to your enemies with 3 2.3GHz cores. The triple-core Phenom processor has L1 and L2 caches for each core and 2MB of L3 cache is available to handle really heavy loads or large data sets.

Memory transfers get faster than ever. HyperTransport Generation 3.0 mode allows up to 16.0GB/s of bandwidth. Add that to the 17.1GB/s from the integrated memory controller for an amazing 33.1GB/s of memory bandwidth. This unprecedented bandwidth is needed to feed the data hungry AMD64 with Direct Connect Architecture cores.

You'd think that all of this power would be too hot to handle. Think again. AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 2.0 technology works with CoolCore Technology to minimize heat while keeping power and efficiency up. Now the cores can shut down unused parts of the processor when not in use. This saves power and helps to reduce the amount of heat generated. This function is built in so there's no need for drivers or BIOS updates.

  • newegg AMD64 Triple-core Technology AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With Triple-Core technology, three complete processor cores on a single die run at the same frequency to deliver exceptional multi-tasking power, allowing users to surge through the most demanding processing loads, including advanced multitasking, critical business productivity, complicated visual design and modeling, serious gaming, and visually stunning digital media and entertainment.
  • newegg Integrated DDR2 DRAM Memory Controller The AMD Phenom 8650 Triple-Core processor is integrated with a DDR2 DRAM memory controller capable of supporting unbuffered DRAM. The integrated memory controller changes the way the processor accesses main memory, resulting in increased bandwidth, reduced memory latencies, and enhanced processor performance.
  • newegg HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT 3.0 technology the AMD Phenom 8650 Triple-Core processor enjoys 3600MHz system bus speeds.
  • newegg AMD Cool'n'Quiet 2.0 Technology AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 2.0 technology is an enhanced solution available on AMD Phenom X3 processor-based systems that can effectively lower power consumption and enable a quieter-running system while delivering performance-on-demand.
  • newegg AMD Virtualization Virtualization on desktop computers allows a single PC to act like multiple virtual machines. AMD Virtualization can enable client computers to seamlessly support multiple operating environments. And it also helps make it easier for PC enthusiasts to upgrade and maintain their PCs through emulation.
  • newegg AMD CoolCore Technology AMD CoolCore Technology reduces processor energy consumption by turning off unused parts of the processor. Power can be switched on or off within a single clock cycle so that energy is saved without compromising performance.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: great power for the money you spend. just over a year and a half ago for the same price I had a 4400+ AMD Athalon 64, now I'm cruising at 8650. The cashe is great too. i was running Far Cry 2 on my 4400, that think had I think 128k of cache total, this thing is hitting megs of cache.

idles at 34-36C

Cons: none what so ever.

Other Thoughts: Almost lost the case sticker

5 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: Works great, runs at 54C temp when idle with stock fan. fast enough for HTPC and playing blueray movies from ISO images.

Cons: The CPU fan is 3 pin not 4 pin, so you can not use the BIOS option for the AMD feature of Cool'n'quiet. In other words the CPU fan will run 100% all the time making lot's of noise. You can use a free program called speedfan to adjust the speed.

5 out of 5 eggsa little trooper

Pros: bought this as a budget cpu for a budget gaming build for a friend of mine. I figured if two cores is good, 3 would probably be even better in general. Having a gaming computer that's long in the tooth and is an older AMD dual-core, I was amazed at how quick it was. I have this CPU in a gigabyte UD4p board and it works wonderfully.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Excellent if you're on a budget and think you need slightly more power than 2 cores, but don't have the cash for four cores.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU, mediocre HSF

Pros: Excellent CPU, does well on benchmarks and handles games easily (especially Flash-based ones, like Playfish which are pretty CPU-intensive).

Cons: The stock heatsink fan is mediocre. When I played Fallout 3, CPU temp would get up to high 60s (67ºC peak at one time). Knowing that max is around 70, that's awfully hot. Plus, my stock fan rattled like an old turbo-prop, probably hitting around 40 dB. I just now replaced it with a Zalman CNPS9900LED and it runs beautifully quiet. Peak temps no higher than 58-59.

Other Thoughts: I would plan on getting a third-party HSF (like the Zalman I mentioned above) before considering putting it on the board. Trying to get the stock thermal pad/grease off is a pain. The Zalman CNPS9900LED fits and cools well and looks cool too.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3
Video: Sparkle Geforce 9800GTX+
PSU: Power & Cooling S61EPS

5 out of 5 eggsNearly a year and still kickin'

Pros: I bought this processor roughly 10 months ago. It's been just as good to me as on the day I bought it. It truly is a champion, and handles everything I throw at it flawlessly. Gaming is a breeze, as well as watching Blu-Rays, listening to music and doing any multi-tasking.

Although this processor is way outdated it's still a great processor. If you're just looking for a step up on a dual core, you can't go wrong with this puppy. Works great with Windows 7 RC.

Cons: It doesn't cook you breakfast OR make the women drool with delight. :-P

Other Thoughts: Rig:
AMD Phenom 8650
Powercolor Radeon AX4850
2GB OCZ Reaper HPC DDR2 1066
Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro
Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3
250GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM
Raidmax Hybrid 2 RX-730SS 730W
Windows 7 RC

5 out of 5 eggsNice performance

Pros: First triple-core I've bought (always used dual-core before). It gets a bit warm, but that's only because the thermal compound on the stock CPU fan didn't melt the first time.

Cons: I should have bought the quad-core for another $10, but oh well.

Other Thoughts: Replace the stock fan.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Budget Processor

Pros: A triple-core Phenom for under $80 - what a great deal! This processor runs plenty fast for everything I need it to do -Internet, convert audio/video, light gaming. I was amazed when I ran an anti-virus scan, anti-malware scan, converted audio, and listened to music while surfing the Internet (excuse the lame expression, but I couldn't think of a better way to put it). The point was there was no pause in my audio and the other programs appeared to be running swiftly as well. Amazing.

Cons: As long as it doesn't overheat or malfunctions, there is none.

Other Thoughts: Great chip - long live AMD/ATI and NEWEGG. Intel may make slightly faster chips, but in my opinion AMD offers a lot more for the money (and in these tough times we need to save all the money we can -and spend the rest on a fast video card!)

5 out of 5 eggsFast and Snappy

Pros: Fast and snappy performance, runs relatively cool. Vista SP1 DVD detected all three cores right off without any updates. Detected and runs on a ASUS M4A78-EM on the stock BIOS. I upgraded to the latest BIOS and it seemed to run better.

Cons: Runs a little hot for my tastes, but it's a good chip.

Stock heatsink is a block of aluminum with a fan. I expected more from AMD (Higher end chips include heatpipes)

Other Thoughts: Phenom chips are under rated. It runs smooth as silk.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect!

Pros: fastest chip for the price currently on the market, 3 cores really help system stability when multi-tasking. everything else has been said already. But wait until you overclock this chip. Oc'ing this chip really shows its colors if u game, nfs undercover is running at 1920x1080 4x antialiasing and anisotropic flawlessly with an old 9800GT 1gb card, no hiccups whtsoever.

Cons: oc'ing with a locked cpu multiplier is a b!%$h! i wish the multiplier was unlocked cuz from my gathering this chip has good oc potential when paired with a decent cooler.
Before overclocking i noticed very minor lag in frame rates at the said graphics' preferences but after ocing this chip the game is flowing like a dream.

Other Thoughts: i was able to oc' this chip to 3001.5Mhz with 261 Fsb. Had to drop the memory speed to DDR2-800, northbus and Ht-link multipliers to 7 and some minor voltage adjustments. Resulting in memory speed of DDR2-1044, 1827Mhz Northbus and HT-link speed. system stability is checked with prime95 and amd overdrive temps: 30deg idle 46deg load with x!%@#tek 4heatpipe cooler. so far this thing is smoking everything im throwing at it.
