Throw another day’s work on the "done" pile. The Athlon X2 4850e makes it easy. With dual 2.5GHz cores that each have a dedicated 512KB cache, you have the power to do anything you like. HyperTransport technology boosts system performance by a point-to-point bus construction designed to reduce I/O bottlenecks and latency for increased data bandwidth.
The 64-bit design will keep you going well into the future. The AMD64 technology is compatible with existing software and enables a seamless transition to the 64-bit applications. This technology allows end users to take advantage of real-time encryption, more life-like games, accurate speech interfaces, cinema-quality graphic effects, and easy-to-use video and audio editing.
If you're going to use this processor on your home desktop, it can be the basis of a media center with AMD Live! technology. This new feature from AMD will turn your PC into an entertainment platform second to none. Watch videos or TV in one room while streaming music into another. Your system will become a true media center with music, movies, and photos all organized and able to be shared amongst all of your connected equipment.

Good power, low power.
- Pros: This cpu provides good compute power at low power consumption. Typically a cheaper system build than similar Core 2 Duo configurations. This CPU is a great candidate for a quiet desktop or HTPC build, with appropriate cooling strategies (the noise is in the cooling system, of course). My 4850e ran several hours of PRIME95 with no problem.
- Cons: Most BIOS do not officially support this cpu yet (5/1/08), but since it's very similar to the BE-2400 it shouldn't be long before updates arrive. The 35W Core 2 Duo processor will have a noticeably lower power consumption, but at a pretty stiff price increase; $200 vs $90 for the CPU alone.
Cheap, yet powerful home server CPU
- Pros: It runs at around 37-42C max, and only 10C more without fan (but with fan controllers you get best of both worlds.) I've built several machines using the CPU at work. They do great for office work and the casual LAN parties we have sometimes. I went and bought one for my home server, and so far so good. 45W! My system pulls less than 100W.
- Cons: I don't know. I've been using AMD CPU's for over a decade, but I've been with Intel (e6600 and Pentium D 940) for several years. The preformance is not as spectacular, but dang....this has alot of bang for your buck.
- Other Thoughts: Needed a home server to run quiet and cool as to not heat my room in Texas heat. I have an ASUS M3A-H/HDMI, Wintech 2GB DDR2800, Segate 160GB, and a cheap BUT highly reviewed 500W pwrsupply. I have a rackmounted 4U case with a 5-bay hotswap SATA array. I have FTP, Apache, Utorrent w/ WEBUI, iTunes (master library for the rest of the house), and video converter programs using this. The fact that it runs this cool, quiet and efficient just amazes me.

Great processor
- Pros: Has virtualization and great performance for good price and power consumption. Used with mythbuntu (Linux) for DVR and stays at 1 GHz most of the time. Machine uses 80 watts at idle and about 100 when working. Coupled with NVidia 9400 for excellent DVR system (wanted low power, good performance, and low price).
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: Great price/performance/heat.
Nice
- Pros: Runs everything I throw at it. It will definitely hold me over until my next build. Stays way cool too. Wicked CPU.
- Cons: None. AMD all the way.
- Pros: Good bang for the buck. Can run CS:S and DOD:S with no lag and high settings. Low power consumption and no too loud.
- Cons: None.
- Other Thoughts: If you are looking to build a budget box for gaming this processor can handle it. Maybe come out with a 45nm size, but it is what it is.

Highlights
 |
AMD64 Dual-core Technology AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With dual-core technology there are two complete processor cores in one physical package running at the same frequency to deliver TRUE multi-tasking power, allowing users to switch from one program to another without pausing for the computer to catch up and reducing annoying processing pauses.
|
 |
HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT technology the AMD Athlon X2 4850e Dual-core processor enjoys 2000MHz system bus speeds.
|
 |
Enhanced Virus Protection All AMD processors equipped with AMD64 technology are Enhanced Virus Protection-enabled. Enhanced virus protection acts as a preventative measure causing viruses to be localized, short-lived, and non-contagious, eventually being flushed from system memory.
|
 |
AMD Virtualization Virtualization on desktop computers allows a single PC to act like multiple virtual machines. AMD Virtualization can enable client computers to seamlessly support multiple operating environments. And it also helps make it easier for PC enthusiasts to upgrade and maintain their PCs through emulation.
