Like the superheroes of old, the AMD Phenom streaks out of the night to lay waste to your enemies with Three 2.1GHz cores. The triple-core Phenom processor has L1 and L2 caches for each core and 2MB of L3 cache is available to handle really heavy loads or large data sets.

Memory transfers get faster than ever. HyperTransport Generation 3.0 mode allows up to 16.0GB/s of bandwidth. Add that to the 17.1GB/s from the integrated memory controller for an amazing 33.1GB/s of memory bandwidth. This unprecedented bandwidth is needed to feed the data hungry AMD64 with Direct Connect Architecture cores.

You'd think that all of this power would be too hot to handle. Think again. AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 2.0 technology works with CoolCore Technology to minimize heat while keeping power and efficiency up. Now the cores can shut down unused parts of the processor when not in use. This saves power and helps to reduce the amount of heat generated. This function is built in so there's no need for drivers or BIOS updates.

  • newegg AMD64 Triple-core Technology AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. • newegg Integrated DDR2 DRAM Memory Controller The AMD Phenom 8450 Triple-Core processor is integrated with a DDR2 DRAM memory controller capable of supporting unbuffered DRAM. The integrated memory controller changes the way the processor accesses main memory, resulting in increased bandwidth, reduced memory latencies, and enhanced processor performance.
  • newegg HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. 1 out of 5 eggsOEM or DOA Return?

Pros: None

Cons: Like another, mine came with grease marks and I had 2 that are completely unusable. Newegg OEM must means something completely different than actual OEM. This is the last time I will buy an OEM CPU. I checked on RMA returns and it says they are not eligible. O.o Hopefully phone support will be helpful.

Other Thoughts: I usually don't have big issues with Newegg even considering the amount of business I do every year with them. When I do though, It's usually a doozy.

5 out of 5 eggsBest CPU for the money

Pros: Honestly, other than with the latest and hardest games running on my system, this CPU has honestly been without a hickup since I bought it almost a year and a half ago. Since then I have been multitasking like it's second nature, and this CPU keeps things flowing without a hitch. Crysis, or up to 3 Accounts of EVE Online running at max settings, Media Player playing a movie in 1080p, McAfee, all running on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and I hardly get this up to 75% on all cores. Crysis alone does max them out from time to time... but what system does that game NOT max out?

This CPU has, and likely will be serving me very well in the upcoming months - I cannot slow it down! I know there are bigger, better processors out there but honestly, with this chip, paired up with 6Gb DDR2 and two 8800GTS cards, my system's only bottleneck is the hard drives. Everything runs great once I get the data off the HDD and in the system.

Cons: Bought it as part of a Gateway GT5692.... which died in 8 months when the motherboard blew out. Scrapped it for parts and rebuild a tripple core system that's been rock solid ever since.

Other Thoughts: For people looking for a low power consumption, high performance, highly multitaskable CPU, this one is, while not the fastest, one of the best for the price. I can only imagine how much faster the 2.3GHz version is.

Been thinking about overclocking but I don't think this is the CPU to do it, as it's not a BE processor, but I haven't had the need yet as I can't max it out. That will probably change this winter with the new COD, Dead Space 2, and definitely Crysis 2 come out.

CPU: AMD Phenom x3 8450
RAM: 6Gb DDR2 800
GPU: 2x Zotac 8800GTS 640Mb
500GB WD 7200rpm HDD
160GB WD 7200rpm HDD
NZXT M59 ATX Mid Tower

All running on a 3rd party 750w PSU - This system is fantastic and I'm probably going to put it on liquid cooling for the fun of it, and to cool the 8800's since they do run rather toasty. Going to put some SSD's in Raid-0 in there to replace the 160Gb System drive in the next few months. Will probably see what the system can do at

5 out of 5 eggsOCed and still strong

Pros: Still stable, even after being OCed its entire life and exceding its advised heat limit.
Its not the fastest processor, but its 3 cores and cache is plenty even for games.

And now being $60 go for the extra core for better multitasking.

Cons: You cant pair this with the new 5870, because its not powerful enough to push the high end graphics. But if your looking at this Proc I doubt you will be looking at a $500 graphics card anyway.
And it still sucks 95W instead of getting a jump to 65W.

Other Thoughts: I run this with 4 gigs of mem (Muskin OCed) an OCed 9600 GT and I can play almost all games with less "eye candy" but with very playable frame rates. You could easily push a little faster graphics, but just keep it balanced. My processor is still just fine with all the abuse I have put it through. Kept at 2.6GHz peeks at 2.9GHz, fails stress tests but runs windows and games fine at 3.04Ghz

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT bang for the buck

Pros: Might be the best performance/dollar around right now. Got this for my personal machine. I run it at 2.4 GHz (15% OC'd) and under heavy load, rarely exceeds 110 deg. F with stock cooling. It clocks higher, but I don't want to shorten it's life. This might be most power you can get for this little money today, even at the stock clock.

Cons: none that I can think of

Other Thoughts: This processor is rock solid and runs cool, even when over clocked. Sure the Core 2 Duos are nice, but they cost so much more. The Athlon triple core has found another fan.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Processors!

Pros: Fast!! (Never exp. something like this read other thoughts)

Worked right out of the box. I was really worried at first, but MAN, my Bios saw all 3 cores. Runs fine. !

Runs Vista Busniess 64bit SMOOOOOTH

Bought mine retail

Cons: <___< ?

Wish I bought the 2.3 T__T

Other Thoughts: I have always been stuck on, very low end style machines. I use to have a Celeron D 3.2ghz processor but now.... :D

I have been sold out to AMD. So many Intel Fan Boys complain? But I don't see any problem with these here.

D: plus im a college budget right now, but still good processors!!

Good work AMD !!!

5 out of 5 eggsNice triple core

Pros: The bang for the buck is good with this processor. Not top of the line but good value for $68 delivered! Had it up and running in less than five minutes after the UPS guy handed it to me. Rated at 95W the old x2 was rated at 65W. Sensor readings are <= old readings. Has to be efficient at "spreading the workload" for this to happen. Definitely worth the price.

Cons: I hate those "peanuts" that they put in the boxes.

Other Thoughts: This cpu is 200 mhz slower than the dual core it replaced. I can run my Sub (SH4) and combat flight sims with it. The Flight sim I'm currently using (CFS3) is actually smoother with this cpu. That third core must be taking care of business elsewhere. The price is close to higher speed dual cores. It's kind of a tossup, depending on what your doing.
I do a mixture of video editing and gaming with my machine. It equals much more expensive competitors at a fraction of the competitor's cost. In xp I got all three cores running @ %100, according to both FanSpeed and AMD Power monitor and cpu is 31°C with a Thermaltake CL-P0075 Heat Pipe heat sink/fan. House temperature is 62°F. So I think I can expect a worst case of 55°C in the heat of the summer. And that is pushing all three cores to %99 ~ %100 !

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid.

Pros: Not applicable.

Cons: Must be Newegg's idea of OEM, not AMD OEM. Had heatsink grease on it and dead, almost guaranteed a previous defective return they decided to ship to me anyway.

Other Thoughts: I'd always considered Newegg a 5 star outfit, no more. Avoid anything where it's up to them for QC.

Pros: plays crysis like a mad man even when i set affinity to just one core!!!!!!!

Cons: it gets hot. REAL HOT! i was encoding some movies and songs while burning a blue ray and playing 4 games at once and it killed my whole family in their sleep.

Other Thoughts: i over clocked it and it sent be back to the future.
