What I like about this processor is the great value for the money. This processor is fast, offering very good performance for reasonable cost compared to Intel 65W Quad Core offerings (normally costing 2-3x more than this processor). Cons: No significant cons. Stock heatsink is adequate but when this processor is fully stressed with Prime95, temperatures are higher than I care to see. This processor could well be consuming slightly more than 65W when fully stressed. Otherwise, CPU temperatures are acceptable for light to moderate usage. I would recommend a heatsink upgrade if you plan to fully utilize this processor. Other Thoughts: I am satisfied with this processor. This processor is for discerning mainstream users who care about good performance for reasonable cost and low power consumption. If you are such a user, this processor is for you. Single and Multi-threaded applications are very responsive. I run this processor with Windows Home XP installed on ASUS M3A78-EM motherboard with 4 GB of Kingston DDR2-800 memory and a pair of 640GB Western Digital Green harddrives. Since this processor operates at 2.0 GHz clock speed, this allows DDR2-800 to be operated at rated frequency (since the CPU frequency is divisible by 400 MHz). Did you find this review helpful? Always careful about combos for various reasons, but nothing to be careful of here. Quad core build is for a gaming computer and runs all my games on high settings easily. The best thing about this processor really has to be the stock heatsync that came with it. It locks extremely tight to the cpu and keeps it extremely cool. average temperature is 21c and even under a full burn it never got over 29c. Combined this with Asus M3N72-D motherboard, GTX 260 video card and 2 GB Gskill 1066 DDR2 RAM. Cons: Nothing really. 1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. Did you? Media Center really benefits from this processor. Plus low power consumption in a Quad Core, Intel can't match that yet. My motherboard's bus recently had trouble recognizing a cheap PS->USB adapter and one press of my keyboard's "WWW" media key accidentally opened 50+ Firefox windows. With this processor running smooth and faithfully, Ubuntu didn't choke even in the slightest bit. - This processor is rather good at handling games where a lot is going on (i.e. RTS games); I've played a bit of Supreme Commander (a very resource-demanding game) since I installed this CPU and it has handled it flawlessly at maximum settings so far. Initially I had some stuttering in CounterStrike Source, but after a BIOS update that was gone. - I'm using an encrypted home partition in Ubuntu (via LUKS), and during intense read/write sessions (i.e. with rsync backing everything up), kcryptd never manages to slow things down. I guess it's because it uses only one of the four cores :-P Cons: It seems to put out a bit more heat than I expected it to for a processor rated at 65 watts. I installed an Arctic Cooling "Freezer 64" heatsink on this, and it's idling at around 32 C. That's with the automatically-throttled (via "Cool 'n' Quiet" ondemand scaling) CPU speed hovering at 1 GHz. Maybe it's just that I demand too much of processors marketed as being cool and energy-efficient, or that I expected more for a processor of this price, but I was hoping it would be a lot cooler. Other Thoughts: It doesn't seem there are any AM2/AM2+ only boards that support HyperTransport as fast as this processor can allow. My board, for example, only supports HT as fast as 2000. Maybe it's to give flexibility if the consumer wants to upgrade to a board with a faster bus speed later? Well, I can only hope that AMD boards remain backwards-compatible with AM2+ CPUs for years to come, because I don't want to spend any more money on upgrades for as long as possible! Was able to Overclock to 2.3GHZ, Stays Cool, Quad Core Cons: Isn't for a high level gamer. Slight overclocking only, you cant go too far with this one, but the wattage should tell you that. 2.3 is pushing it. Other Thoughts: This is a great Quad Core from AMD, its inexpensive, has true quad core power, and after overclocking to 2.3, it was able to run things smoother then my old AMD Athlon 3800+ 64 at 2.3GHZ. I built my HTPC with this setup, stuck it on a ASUS M3A78-EM, and so far its worked like a champ. Running Windows 7 32 bit. Windows 7 picked up all the hardware and drives. Runs better than Vista HP64 - haven't bogged it down yet (8GB of RAM helps.) Cons: None, but would prefer better stock cooler. Other Thoughts: Runs maybe 20°F over ambient with stock cooler.
