Like the superheroes of old, the AMD Phenom II streaks out of the night to lay waste to your enemies with 3.0GHz quad cores, each of which has L1 and L2 caches. An additional 6MB of L3 cache is available to handle really heavy loads or large data sets.

Memory transfers get faster than ever. HyperTransport Generation 3.0 mode allows up to 16.0GB/s of bandwidth. Up to 17.1GB/s memory bandwidth for DDR2 delivers an amazing 37GB/s of processor-to-system bandwidth. This unprecedented bandwidth is needed to feed the data hungry AMD64 with Direct Connect Architecture cores.

You'd think that all of this power would be too hot to handle. Think again. AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 technology works with CoolCore Technology to minimize heat while keeping power and efficiency up. Now the cores can shut down unused parts of the processor when not in use. This saves power and helps to reduce the amount of heat generated. This function is built in so there's no need for drivers or BIOS updates.

  • newegg AMD64 Quad-core Technology AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With Quad-Core technology, four complete processor cores on a single die run at the same frequency to deliver exceptional multi-tasking power, allowing users to surge through the most demanding processing loads, including advanced multitasking, critical business productivity, complicated visual design and modeling, serious gaming, and visually stunning digital media and entertainment.
  • newegg Integrated DDR2 DRAM Memory Controller The AMD Phenom II X4 Quad-Core processor is integrated with DDR2 DRAM memory controller capable of supporting registered and ECC DRAM. The integrated memory controller changes the way the processor accesses main memory, resulting in increased bandwidth, reduced memory latencies, and enhanced processor performance.
  • newegg HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT 3.0 technology the AMD Phenom II X4 quad-Core processor enjoys 4000MHz system bus speeds.
  • newegg AMD Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 Technology AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 technology is an enhanced solution available on AMD Phenom II X4 processor-based systems that can effectively lower power consumption and enable a quieter-running system while delivering performance-on-demand.

5 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely Flawless, 7 years later

Pros: I'm satisfied with this processor. 7 years later and it still runs everything a modern day computer does. I have since upgraded to the FX8150, but the processor is still being used in my parents PC which my brothers and sisters play all their games on. No issues what-so-ever!

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: I've always been an AMD fan. This is one of the reasons why. Flawlessness for so long. Was back then the best bang for your buck, and yet it still runs like a flagship CPU. More then a lot of modern day computers. Couldn't be happier with it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Processor

Pros: Outstanding processor! My MB finally gave up the ghost or I'd still be using this CPU. I originally paired it with a GIGABYTE GA-MA785G-UD3H MB with an integrated ATI HD 4200 GPU and 8GB of RAM. The heat sink on the ATI warped off after like 6 years and fried the MB. It was an outstanding HTPC and hung in there like a champ. Replacing it with an A10 APU.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent processor!!!!

Pros: I've had this thing since 2009 and it still does everything I ask of it and it does it well. This has been the best processor I've ever owned. It's been running for 5 years clocked at 4ghz and hasn't had one problem whatsoever.

Cons: None

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I've owned this chip since release and it has served me well for these 5+ years. I actually dropped it into a socket AM2 Jetway board that never received a bios update to officially support the Phenom II line. The mobo reports it as "AMD Processor Model Unknown,"
but it functions normally anyway. While the board technically doesn't support DDR2-1066 (and this chip should only support it on AM2+) the bios has an option for that speed, and I learned fool it into booting at that setting by hitting the power button and then quickly hitting reset. I've had it running stable at a 3.3 GHz OC for years. It's been great for gaming, but it's starting to struggle nowadays.

Cons: Runs hot, even with my Zalman CNPS9700 replacing the stock cooler. I can't get it to run stable at 3.4 GHz or beyond, which is kind of disappointing for a black edition processor. I'm probably gimping it on many levels by running it on socket AM2, though.

Other Thoughts: I will be retiring this for an i5 4690k setup very soon. However, it will continue to serve in my parent's office PC, in an actual AM2+ board this time.

5 out of 5 eggsVery reliable

Pros: Good for intermediate gaming! To my experience, not too bad for video editing and encoding, but that's just me. I've never used a better CPU for that stuff. It has served me well for the past 4 years running 3.4 GHz.

Cons: I wasn't able to keep it stable at 3.5 GHz. No big deal. Probably my mobo's fault. Like how much difference is an additional 100 MHz gonna make? lol. It bottlenecks my GTX 660 Ti in newer games, obviously.

Other Thoughts: I recommend it to anyone on a super tight budget, but if one can spend a little higher, I'd say go for the best FM2+ socket.
I have an FX-8350 planned for my next build. Hoping by next year I'll have it. Making just enough money to pay bills gets annoying.
