  • newegg AMD64 Dual-core Technology AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With dual-core technology there are two complete processor cores in one physical package running at the same frequency to deliver TRUE multi-tasking power. Users can freely switch from one program to another without pausing for the computer to catch up, reducing processing pause annoyances.
  • newegg Integrated DDR DRAM Memory Controller The AMD Opteron 175 Dual-core processor is integrated with a DDR DRAM memory controller with ECC DRAM support. The integrated memory controller changes the way the processor accesses main memory, resulting in increased bandwidth, reduced memory latencies and enhanced processor performance. DDR400/PC3200 memory provides the processor with up to 6.4GB/s memory bandwidth.
  • newegg HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT technology the AMD Opteron 175 Dual-core processor enjoys 1000MHz system bus speeds.
  • newegg Enhanced Virus Protection All AMD processors equipped with AMD64 technology are enabled with Enhanced Virus Protection. Enhanced virus protection acts as a preventative measure causing viruses to be localized, short-lived and non-contagious, eventually being flushed from system memory.

5 out of 5 eggsBest upgrade for socket 939

Pros: Dual core. No need to throw away the old 939 motherboard.
I upgraded to this Opty 175 from an FX-55 and the improvement was dramatic. Currently using it for 3D rendering, it cut my rendering time in half.

Cons: Seems tricky to overclock. Wish the clock speed was higher.

Other Thoughts: If you still have a 939 motherboard laying around, use this CPU for a significant upgrade.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat upgrade

Pros: Upgraded to this from a 3500+ and with no trouble it worked perfectly. Really dropped some new life into my old socket 939 system.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsAMD does it again

Pros: I bought this opteron upgrading from a single core 2.4 Ghz Athlon, and the performance increase is amazing. With AMD's Dual Core optimizer tool, you really do see an increase in performance with apps. Also gave me about a 10fps boost in crysis... Although thats mostly a video card problem, more about that in another review.

Cons: Found it a little on the pricey side, as say compared to the AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, its the same price. Yes, socket 939 is older technology, thats the price you pay for hanging on to that machine.

Other Thoughts: AMD does it again. Thats all that needs to be said.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Impressed

Pros: After havin' an aging 3500+ Anthon for 4+ years, I finally decided to see what my upgrade options were. Go figure that AMD's website would try to throw me another Anthon right off the bat, heh. Anyways, a friend of mine showed me this and another processor that he considered the best for my situation (Socket 939.) I went with this and I was completely astound by the substantial increase in preformance my PC has now reached. I haven't tried overclocking yet but I probably won't, I get all the power I need from its initial settings. Not to mention that my PC is currently holding this baby back (Xpress 200 for Graphics and got another stick of 512 Memory atop the standard 1Gig it came with.) I only expect to see improvements as I install more memory and get myself a reliable up-to-date video card.

Cons: None so far and from what I hear, it's gonna stay that way for quite a while.

Other Thoughts: If you've already got a mobo that has the socket 939 slot for processors get this or the Opteron 180. Either of these upgrades will probably last you the remaining life of those boards. Otherwise if you're starting from scratch, I'd suggest getting a more up-to-date motherboard, don't wanna be stuck with a half-life on a new PC now, would you?

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Excellent over clocker. I have this running @ 2.75ghz with stock voltage. If my memory was better I could easily break 3ghz with this cpu.

Cons: yeah right....

Other Thoughts: This chip easily puts your aging socket 939 back in the game. Don't bother upgrading to a AM2 when you can pump this puppy up. Just make sure you have good memory to reach those insane speeds!

5 out of 5 eggsBest OC'er I've owned

Pros: Awesome OC'er, very fast at encoding/decoding and compressing. Also extremely good for gaming. IMO its better than the X2 series.

Cons: I couldn't hit 3.2gigs :'(

Other Thoughts: Almost got this to 3.2gigs OC but I backed it down because it was running a bit warm. Now its stable at 2.7gigs with a Zalman CNPS7700 (I think its that cooler, cant remember exactly). MUCH faster thanmy old x2 3800+ (and a better OC'er). Do not try this CPU if you dont want to get hooked on Opty's!

5 out of 5 eggsno better multitasker

Pros: powerful 64bit proc. if you multitask opterons are for you. this thing is insane it was outpreforming my multitasking abilities, i had to stretch up my taskbar to keep up with everything. had WMM saving a movie file, SUPER encoding files to MPEG4, and about 60 img windows open in the GIMP, even had UT2k4 open in windowed mode.not to mention the 6 explorer windows with all the files in them. all this while playing music/surfing the web, and with NO slowdown whatsoever. i am no longer afraid to run antivirus scans, burn DVDs, and play UT2k4 at the same time.

Cons: its not quad core?
my only having 1GB ram was holding this thing back, no fault of the proc. upgrading to 4GB soon

Other Thoughts: it runs superpi 1m iess than 32 seconds at stock speed. on stock cooling without overclocking (with ArticS5 of course) ive never seen this get above 40c.

3 out of 5 eggsNot good for O/C

Pros: It is good for multitasking

Cons: I replaced a 3700+ San Diego working @ 2750 with high stability and low mem timings, I hoped this Opty would be the same but with two cores. Using same setup, very, very instable, had to go almost to 1.5 v and loose timings from 2.5-3-3-5 (with 3700) to 3-4-4-6, not as fast or stable as 3700+. I guest had bad luck with stepping CCBWE 0601…

Other Thoughts: It works very hot, using Thermaltake Blue Orb II 36°C at idle to 60°C at high load for example with Ghost Recon AWF. (3700 28°C idle to 50°C at full load)
I was thinking to get a 180, but I read it is a worst
I got 1 min 11.7 sec on Super pi 2m against 1 min 09.3 with 3700+

1 out of 5 eggsBad luck maybe? Major headache!

Pros: Despite how much I hate UPS, newegg got the order out of their warehouse same day I ordered, received two days later... guess kudos to UPS for living up to their 3-day guarantee for once haha.

Cons: I'm jealous of all the reviewers that were able to push 3.0ghz. This piece runs HOTTTT with a Thermalright XP-90C CPU Copper Heatsink, and a Panasonic Panaflow 92mm fan sitting on top, around 42c idle. Kept my old 3700+ OC'd to 2.85ghz running around 38c under full load, 29c idle. Running at stock speeds, system is unstable. I raised the voltage to 1.5, and temps started to exceed 45c idle with no effect on stability. Booted fine at 2.0ghz no problems except running hot :X

Other Thoughts: Going to try the Opteron 185...
