Like the superheroes of old, the AMD Phenom II X4 955 streaks out of the night to lay waste to your enemies with four 3.2GHz cores that have dedicated L1 and L2 caches for each , and 6MB of shared L3 cache to handle really heavy loads or large data sets.

Memory transfers get faster than ever. HyperTransport Generation 3.0 mode allows up to 16.0GB/s of bandwidth. Up to 17.1GB/s memory bandwidth for DDR2 and up to 21GB/s memory bandwidth for DDR3 memory controller delivers an amazing total of 37GB/s of processor-to-system bandwidth. This unprecedented bandwidth is needed to feed the data hungry AMD64 with Direct Connect Architecture cores.

You'd think that all of this power would be too hot to handle. Think again. AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 works with CoolCore Technology to minimize heat while keeping power and efficiency up. Now the cores can shut down unused parts of the processor when not in use. This saves power and helps to reduce the amount of heat generated. This function is built in so there's no need for drivers or BIOS updates.

  • newegg AMD64 Quad-core Technology AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With Quad-core technology, four complete processor cores on a single die run at the same frequency to deliver exceptional multi-tasking power, allowing users to surge through the most demanding processing loads, including advanced multitasking, critical business productivity, complicated visual design and modeling, serious gaming, and visually stunning digital media and entertainment.
  • newegg HyperTransport 3.0 Technology HyperTransport 3.0 Technology (HT 3.0) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT 3.0 technology the AMD Phenom II X4 955 Quad-Core processor enjoys 3200MHz system bus speeds.
  • newegg AMD Virtualization Virtualization on desktop computers allows a single PC to act like multiple virtual machines. AMD Virtualization can enable client computers to seamlessly support multiple operating environments. And it also helps make it easier for PC enthusiasts to upgrade and maintain their PCs through emulation.
  • newegg AMD CoolCore Technology AMD CoolCore Technology reduces processor energy consumption by turning off unused parts of the processor. Power can be switched on or off within a single clock cycle so that energy is saved without compromising performance.
  • newegg AMD Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 Technology AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 technology is an enhanced solution available on AMD Phenom II X4 processor-based systems that can effectively lower power consumption and enable a quieter-running system while delivering performance-on-demand.
  • newegg Integrated DDR2 and DDR3 DRAM Memory Controller The AMD Phenom II X4 Quad-Core processor is integrated with DDR2 and DDR3 DRAM memory controller capable of supporting registered and ECC DRAM. The integrated memory controller changes the way the processor accesses main memory, resulting in increased bandwidth, reduced memory latencies, and enhanced processor performance.

5 out of 5 eggsOne classic CPU

Pros: I ran this CPU for almost 4 straight years 24/7 365. It was overclocked to 3.9 GHZ. and ran without one problem.
At the time, this CPU was one of the best out in the market.

Still a viable chip even though it is out of production.

It is one classic CPU that still holds its own in the marketplace.

AMD gave the computing world a great CPU in the 955.

Cons: No longer being produced. Can be purchased used and sometimes new. Prices have risen due to demand and it being out of production. I've seen prices in the 175 to 200 range for new as of 4/12.

Other Thoughts: I recently sold my 955 to upgrade. It sold for just a few dollars less than what I paid for it new.

People know the value of the AMD 955 and is a cpu that is still in demand.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat processor for over a year

Pros: Fast, stable and great for multitasking.

Cons: There was a couple of games that occasionally gave me the blue screen. I suspect the CPU.

Other Thoughts: It did me well for over 1 1/2 year and then just died on me. I thought it was my board but it ended up being the CPU.

It can be difficult to get a RMA from AMD. That is a bit inconvenient for me being so busy.

I'm still waiting for the RMA#...

5 out of 5 eggsA great processor

Pros: I built a computer over a year ago that involved this cpu, and the other items I gave 5 stars to because they all worked reliably and have not failed in any way (I didn't review a few discontinued parts). However, this cpu really goes a bit beyond what they did. Nothing I could use as a practical application would ever really push it, and some rather taxing algorithms that I made in various failed experiments could push at least one core all the way to the limits. I remember one time I ran 4 of these homemade programs (all utilizing separate cores) at the same time for over 2 hours without seeing the processor really get too hot, even though it did heat up a bit. in addition I ran one for over 3 days which kept 1 core in full use for that time. It completed it flawlessly and also did not really overheat the cpu (stock cooling btw). I think those are the strongest examples, but outside of those it has always been reliable as well.

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: It was very hard to write this review because I feel like I am a bit biased at this point. I have deleted several lines that even mention other brands of processors, but I never had anything bad to say. I guess ultimately I am just glad that we have companies that can make such reliable pieces of technology, and that the technology keeps improving at such an incredible pace.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU

Pros: Fast CPU! I haven't been able to max it out yet, and I haven't even overclocked it. I didn't even need to. No issues at all. Great value too.

Cons: None. I'm surprised this product was deactivated.

Other Thoughts: I would buy this over and over again.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

5 out of 5 eggsBeautiful

Pros: Had it for a year. What a fast processor for the money. It overclocks very welly. I currently have it at 4ghz at 1.45 volts, runs beautiful with an aftermarket cooler. doesn't go over 50C.

Cons: Runs very hot when using stock cooling. Had to bump down the stock voltage which was 1.35 to 1.28 @ 3.2 ghz before overclocking.

5 out of 5 eggsBe Careful!

Pros: Wow, this blows my old Pentium III out of the water! What an upgrade. This chip can run anything that I throw at it, and only hardcore gamers will ever worry about framerates.

Cons: AMD still uses pin contacts, and they are easily bent. Just be careful and you'll have no problems with anything.

Can't really max out Metro 2033.

Doesn't compete with Intel's i7 line, but they're charging so much more for the 9xx series, it's like comparing apples to oranges.

Other Thoughts: My rig:
AMD Phenom II 955
ASUS M4A79 XTD EVO
WD Caviar Green 500GBx2 (RAID)
Sapphire Radeon 4850
[generic 24x optical drive]
OCZ ModXStream 500w
NZXT Lexa S

Runs like a dream.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect upgrade

Pros: 4 cores with unlocked multiplier. Though I have no need to overclock this bad boy, because it's fast enough for me. Worked in my Foxconn A9DA-S motherboard without a bios update. This baby screams.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This is going in my gaming rig, which may be overkill for Diablo 3. My specs are:
Amd Phenom IIx4 955 3.2ghz black editon
Foxconn A9DA-S 890GX ATX Motherboard
4 gig G-Skill memory {2 gig dual channel)
Hitachi 1 terabyte HD 32mb cache 7200RPM
LiteON 24X SATA DVDRW Black iHAS-324-98
Rosewill Green Series RG630-S12 630wat 80plus PS
Rosewill Destroyer Black Gaming ATX Case

using with Soundblaster XtremeGamer PCI sound card
and will be buying a graphics card soon for this baby.
