New Chip Version
- Pros: Just explaining, this is the same as the old 945, just a newer revision or binning that uses up to 30w less power than the old. So a big plus in power usage and thermal output.
- Cons: Still not an unlocked black edition.
Cool Power , Cooler Price
- Pros: Runs faster and cooler at the stock clocking than a Phenom II940x4 BE. I have a Dell XPS625 that came with a CPU heat sink and fan that would require me to pull the motherboard to swap out. So I am stuck with what I have for CPU cooling until I have a very good reason to pull the motherboard.
My Phenom II 940 ran at about 45-50C at idle and approached 55C under a load, even when the CPU and system fans were running loudly. When I dropped the 95W 955 in, the idle temp dropped to 28C.
The HyperTransport speed went from 1800 MHz to 2000MHz.
The default CPU volts went down to 1.3V from 1.4V. I had about a 10% improvement in memory throughput due to the higher north bridge speed of the AM3 CPU over the AM2+ 940.
I am thrilled with this CPU. Awesome bang for the buck.
- Cons: None.
- Other Thoughts: Putting an AM3 CPU in an AM2+ socket has worked very well. I was a little bit worried about compatibility until I tested and confirmed it worked correctly.
I have had the 945 in a Dell XPS625 and a GA-MA790GP-UD4H motherboard. Both systems have 8GB PC21066 memory.
Both systems ran faster and cooler with the 945 over the 940 at the same clock speed.
I am interested in having the power and speed when I need it with a system that runs cool and quietly. I run VM tools VMWare Server and VirtualBox to run Linux and Windows server VM machines.
I am surprised that AMD does not charge more for the 95W version of the 945. Great value.

Nice Upgrad from Dual Core
- Pros: Low power consumption. Low temps (25C at idle and 42C load) with stock heatsink/thermal pad. Great performance and an excellent upgrade from an old Athlon x64 dual core 4200+.
- Cons: None with the chip. AMD Cool'n'Quiet causes Vista to hang at logon so I turned it off.
- Other Thoughts: Excellent price/performance ratio.
Build: CPU: This chip Mobo: ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X Mem: A-Data DDR31600 2x2GB Vid: Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 Case: Antec 300 w/ 3 120mm fans added on all fans set to low. PSU: Antec Earthwatts 650w
Rock Solid
- Pros: -Runs at 34-35c with no load
-3.0Ghz Quad for the price -Installation was easy
- Cons: -The only thing protecting the CPU is a thin sheet of plastic
-Instead of one large booklet, I'd rather see one for product information and such, then another for installation
- Other Thoughts: Great CPU, get it, love it. That's all it is to it.
Very fast!!!
- Pros: Very easy to install compared to older versions, the heat sink was much easier with this model. Love it!!
- Cons: None yet.
