AMD's Sempron 140 is a great choice for HTPCs and other applications where low noise and low heat are major factors. This would also be a great choice for remote systems used to control video walls. You could also use it for building a dedicated print server system.
This 2.7GHz processor only draws 45W of power and still has all the features that make AMD processors great. The on-chip memory controller and HyperTransport technology combine for a 17.0GB/s processor to system bandwidth. It also comes with Cool'n'Quiet technology to increase power efficiency even further.

Awesome backtrack
- Pros: There are so many duals and quads out there, that everyone forgets the advantages of a single-core CPU. Takes all the new CPU technology out there, but make a single-core CPU that uses way less power, and produces way less heat. That is exactly what AMD has done here. It may only be single-core, but it runs at 2.7GHz, 3600MHz HT, 1MB L2 cache, is 45nm, only produces 45W of heat, and operates with less than a volt! It will run circles around any other single-core desktop CPU on the market, even the ones that were a thousand bucks just a few years ago, and will do it using less energy, producing less heat, and only costs $40! As an AM3, it even has DDR3 support, but is still compatible with DDR2 if you're on a budget.
- Cons: Everyone seems to be making a fuss over the fact that the second core in this CPU is unlockable, but it's really not that great. You can only unlock it with certain southbridges, and you're going to spend at least $20 more on a motherboard with that particular southbridge. You could just take that same $20 and go buy the AMD Athlon II X2 240 Regor. You'll get the same dual-cores, plus 2.8GHz instead of 2.7GHz, plus a 4GHz HT instead of a 3.6GHz HT, plus 2MB of L2 instead of 1MB of L2, and you won't have to worry about whether it will unlock or not. I guess if you already have the mobo you need to unlock it, great, but for those who think unlocking this gets you more boost for the buck, just go with the Regor and don't bother spending extra on a mobo you don't need.
- Other Thoughts: This CPU makes a perfect low-power server solution. Since it consumes so little energy, and produces so little heat, it can run for very long periods of time with no ill effects.
I can't wait to see them start using this CPU in laptops. The power you get for the cost and evergy use of this chip is unbelievable. It's going to way extend the battery life over all the dual-cores they're putting in laptops now.
AMD Sempron 140 Sargus 2.7ghz
- Pros: This CPU is a VERY good deal. Matter of fact the best i've seen yet. It supports 64bit and Virtualization. The most bang for the buck I've seen for a processor this inexpensive. The Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H motherboard and this CPU combo offer amazing speed for so little money. This setup replaced an Intel P4 Dual core running at 3.4Ghz and it smashes it for performance and speed. Absolutley no comparison whatsoever. The AMD @ 2.7ghz walks the dog over the Intel P4 @ 3.4ghz. Benchmark testing head to head against the bigger (supposedly faster) P4 was a no contest. It smashed the Intel CPU by a mile. This CPU is definately worth 37 dollars and it's free shipping. It's worth twice the money in my opinion. Did I mention? ONLY 37 dollars? And FREE shipping? I have been an Intel fan forever but I have to say since purchasing this CPU and also owning the AMD Phenom II x4 3.0 ghz Black Edition my opinion of Intel chips has changed. If you want mega performance for CHEAP then buy this CPU.
- Cons: The only thing I can say that's even remotely close to a negative is the stock heat sink is relatively small in size compared to most heat sinks. Considering though that this CPU is such low wattage and runs very cool the heat sink really doesn't need to be large in my opinion.
- Other Thoughts: Did I mention it's 37 dollars and FREE shipping?? Did I mention that it walks the dog over comparable Intel cpu's? Did I mention that it runs very cool? Oh yes one other important note. It does indeed unlock to an uncrippled AMD Athlon II x2 440 Regor CPU. It's a 10 second BIOS tweak and a specific chipset and badda bing. You have an AWESOME dual core chip with an extra hundred dollars in your pocket. Benchmark testing under full load (prime) running all night long and the CPU didn't flinch and didn't get extremely hot with the stock heatsink that ships with the CPU. Take your lady out for supper and smile knowing what a deal you've come across. :-)

The AMD That Could!
- Pros: Ok, Forget everything you know about single core CPU's. This IS the absolute best sinlge core chip I have ever seen. While unlocking the second core is nice, it in no way detracts from keeping the chip single only. As a matter of fact, I saw little difference, if any. It easily outruns my old dual core Athlon x2 Brisbane 5000. Runs super cool, and the HT bus is stock at 2000Mhz, with 533Mhz 1066 Mushkin Ram. Pair this with a SSD drive and get busy! Are there better and faster chips? sure, however, for everyday uses it simply smokes A$$$!
- Cons: NONE!
- Other Thoughts: You simply cannot go wrong with this chip at this price.
Running a simple pro audio setup. 2 500gig Sata II Raid Mushkin DDR2 1066 Dula Kit ECS Black series Ultra board Corsair 400 PSU Antec P180 Insulated Case
Handles games with the best?!!
- Pros: * unlocks to a Athlon II X2 4400e and will run Windows 7 32 bit. For some reason the unlocked core would not run 64 bit, so I dropped it back to a single core and OC'd to 3.5GHz.
* unlocked it has a Windows 7 WEI of 6.6 OC'd. As a Sempron OC'd it has a WEI of 4.8. These are good scores. My quad core Phenom has a WEI of 7.1.
* Now the good stuff; as a Sempron with an HD4770 graphics card, this little guy runs World In Conflict benchmark @ 1680x1050, High setting with a score of 31 fps AVG! As a comparison, I have a Athlon II X2 240 and a Phenom X4 9650 both using a HD4770 and I get a World In Conflict score of 38 fps with all the same settings. In other words, this Sempron is a monster!
*moral of the story; if you're a budget gamer, spend your money on a good mobo and PSU (80 cert) for expandability, and a great graphics card. The key is CPU speed and this has it
*For home office apps, there's no reason to spend money on a higher priced CPU as this handles all programs wit
- Cons: *As with most stock fans, this one is lacking if you plan to OC. Other than that, there is no CON to this CPU!
- Other Thoughts: *This has to be a BEST BUY in CPUs for anyone on a budget. I have a dual core and a quad core along with this Sempron. I could run the Sempron as a Anthlon in Windows 7 32 bit @ 3.5GHz and it almost keeps up my Phenom x4 @ 2.7GHz.
* With an unlocked 2nd core running at 3.5GHz and a WEI of 6.6, do your comparison with other higher priced CPUs. You'll find this truly IS the best bang for the buck!
* Buy the Sempron at $32 put your savings elsewhere in your system and when prices fall on the other CPUs, upgrade.
Awesome chip
- Pros: Great little cheap, for dirt cheap. Most powerful single core out there right now.
I bought this just to give a review on it, on what it's capable of. This CPU was powerful enough when overclocked to about 3.4ghz to play COD WAW without too much drag at 1920x1080 with a gts250 graphics card. I also had a Pentium 4 640, which has hyper threading, overclocked to 4ghz and would NOT play COD, major lag. I've also tried other single cores that just couldn't do it. This chip runs COLD. I gave to 1.50 Vcore and it still never cracked 40c on the stock cooler. Amazing.
- Cons: Hardly a con, because you buy it as a single core, but the second core was semi defective. It would unlock, but only if you undervolted the CPU to 1.15v and underclocked it to 2.2ghz.
However, even at 2.2ghz it was more powerful than in single core form at 3.4ghz. So for a sub $40 cpu, it's still a sweet deal.
- Other Thoughts: This CPU is obviously not really meant for gaming, but it was so cheap I wanted to try it out. I was pleasantly surprised.
