AMD's Sempron 140 is a great choice for HTPCs and other applications where low noise and low heat are major factors. This would also be a great choice for remote systems used to control video walls. You could also use it for building a dedicated print server system.
This 2.7GHz processor only draws 45W of power and still has all the features that make AMD processors great. The on-chip memory controller and HyperTransport technology combine for a 17.0GB/s processor to system bandwidth. It also comes with Cool'n'Quiet technology to increase power efficiency even further.
Pros: This CPU is a VERY good deal. Matter of fact the best i've seen yet. It supports 64bit and Virtualization. The most bang for the buck I've seen for a processor this inexpensive. The Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H motherboard and this CPU combo offer amazing speed for so little money. This setup replaced an Intel P4 Dual core running at 3.4Ghz and it smashes it for performance and speed. Absolutley no comparison whatsoever. The AMD @ 2.7ghz walks the dog over the Intel P4 @ 3.4ghz. Benchmark testing head to head against the bigger (supposedly faster) P4 was a no contest. It smashed the Intel CPU by a mile. This CPU is definately worth 37 dollars and it's free shipping. It's worth twice the money in my opinion. Did I mention? ONLY 37 dollars? And FREE shipping? I have been an Intel fan forever but I have to say since purchasing this CPU and also owning the AMD Phenom II x4 3.0 ghz Black Edition my opinion of Intel chips has changed. If you want mega performance for CHEAP then buy this CPU.
Cons: The only thing I can say that's even remotely close to a negative is the stock heat sink is relatively small in size compared to most heat sinks. Considering though that this CPU is such low wattage and runs very cool the heat sink really doesn't need to be large in my opinion.
Other Thoughts: Did I mention it's 37 dollars and FREE shipping?? Did I mention that it walks the dog over comparable Intel cpu's? Did I mention that it runs very cool? Oh yes one other important note. It does indeed unlock to an uncrippled AMD Athlon II x2 440 Regor CPU. It's a 10 second BIOS tweak and a specific chipset and badda bing. You have an AWESOME dual core chip with an extra hundred dollars in your pocket. Benchmark testing under full load (prime) running all night long and the CPU didn't flinch and didn't get extremely hot with the stock heatsink that ships with the CPU. Take your lady out for supper and smile knowing what a deal you've come across. :-)

An absolute steal. Great processor.

Pros: Unbeatable price, generous L2 Cache, quiet and effective heatsink/fan. Low power consumption.
AMD's pin and socket design, as well as their heatsink clip, is very easy to install.
Cons: Not dual core.
Other Thoughts: This is a perfect chip for a computer that will do basic tasks and maybe some light gaming. I find it's best place is in micro-ATX cases that are to be used as HTPCs. Since AMD and ATI are one, there are some really good combo micro-ATX boards with respectable integrated video just asking for a chip like this. For only a few hundred, you can have yourself a media center PC or a light gaming PC. Good stuff.
The fan and heatsink are not particularly big, making this chip ideal to put into smaller form factor PCs.
Also, the price of this chip is such that kids who save up their allowance for a few weeks can purchase a CPU and get into an interesting hobby like computer building at a very young age.

great HTPC proc

Pros: I usually buy from newegg, but I caught it on sale at a local brick and mortar for $40 w/ an MSI mb. OC'd to 3.2G with just changing ram ratio to 1.66 and bringing the fsb up to 240 to get the ram back to 800mhz. Literally a 2 min ordeal. Works great for playing blu-rays, daily tasks and some light gaming in my living room. With a $15 Thermaltake heatsink and fan even at 3.2G i have yet to see it above 37C.
Cons: 1)People who say this isn't a HTPC proc...buy a cheap video card, it'll take the load off the proc and you'll also get ATI or Nvidia's post processing. You wouldn't ask your blender to toast bread, so do be mad when your proc isn't good at accelerating video.
2)Takes a while to rip HD video, but I have to sleep sometimes, unfortunately it doesn't get to.
Other Thoughts: I also makes for a decent light gaming proc. OC'd to 3.2G, 2x1gb 800mhz ddr2 ram, with a Biostar 4650 512mb ddr3 card OC'd to 700/1100 it put out 7141 in 3dmark06. Not exactly earth shattering, but a respectable score for a couple hundred dollar computer that normally just plays blu-rays and dvds.

Pros: 45 Watts Cheap Comes with heatsink Heatink is SUPER slim, great if you are building it in a really small case.
Cons: could not unlock the second core no matter which bios of the mobo I used.
the heatsink is so small and newegg does not add any pics of the heatsink... so you have to take a gamble here, I found it as a con because I built maybe one of the MOST slim case builds, and i still have enough space to add a heatsink that is 2x bigger then this stock one.
Other Thoughts: I was building an HTPC in a slim case and this heatsink is so SOOO small. I could still put a heatsink that has twice the height of this one.
If i knew this earlyer, I would have just bought a OEM processor that was dual core and bought a separate heatsink that I knew would would fit this Slim case.

Be careful with this bad boy

Pros: Great for your grandma's computer. It's one of the cheapest chips on newegg, possible unlock to a Athlon II.
Cons: Running as a single core this chip is very limited, It choked on 1080p and hulu was barely watchable at 360p. It bottlenecked the onboard hd4200. If I did not unlock the second core I would have had to buy a new chip because my client needed a 1080p capable boxee box.
Other Thoughts: I got the second core to unlock by enabling acc, DECREASING the voltage, and downgrading the bios on my ga-ma785gm-us2h. If you are building an HD HTPC, play it safe and spend the extra 20 bucks for an Athlon II.

Pros: Cheap and fairly Fast. Bought it for a home file server with ECS GeForce6100PM-M2(V3.0). Works great at 28-30C.
Cons: None, it gets the job done.
Other Thoughts: Only have had it 2 days, and did not try it under load, but installed Debian Linux and works great. Faster than my Pentium D940 3.2GHz.

Highlights
AMD64 Technology AMD64 technology is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With Direct Connect Architecture, AMD64 processors address and help eliminate the real challenges and bottlenecks of system architectures because everything is directly connected to the central processing unit.
Integrated DDR2 DRAM Memory Controller The AMD Sempron 140 processor is integrated with a DDR2 DRAM memory controller capable of supporting registered and ECC DRAM. The integrated memory controller changes the way the processor accesses main memory, resulting in increased bandwidth, reduced memory latencies, and enhanced processor performance.
HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT technology the AMD Sempron 140 processor enjoys 6.4GB/s system bus speeds.
AMD Cool'n'Quiet Technology AMD's Cool'n'Quiet technology is an innovative solution available on AMD Athlon 64 processor-based systems that can effectively lower power consumption and enable a quieter-running system while delivering performance-on-demand.
