AMD's Sempron 145 is a great choice for HTPCs and other applications where low noise and low heat are major factors. This would also be a great choice for remote systems used to control video walls. You could also use it for building a dedicated print server system.

This 2.8GHz processor only draws 45W of power and still has all the features that make AMD processors great. The integrated DDR2/DDR3 memory controller and HyperTransport Technology combine to enable your system to boot and load your applications quickly. It also comes with Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 technology to increase power efficiency even further.

  • newegg AMD64 Technology AMD64 technology is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance.
  • newegg Integrated DDR2/DDR3 Memory Controller The AMD Sempron 145 integrates a high-bandwidth, low-latency integrated memory controller that directly connects the processor to memory for optimum performance, low latency, and high throughput.
  • newegg HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT technology the AMD Sempron 145 enjoys 6.4GB/s system bandwidth.
  • newegg AMD Cool'n'Quiet Technology AMD's Cool'n'Quiet technology can effectively lower power consumption and enable a quieter-running system while delivering performance-on-demand.
  • newegg Enhanced Virus Protection All AMD processors equipped with AMD64 technology are Enhanced Virus Protection-enabled. Enhanced virus protection acts as a preventative measure causing viruses to be localized, short-lived, and non-contagious, eventually being flushed from system memory.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful Single-Core

Pros: This single-core has quite a good powerful core to it!!! Processing power is about equal to a Dual CPU Pentium 4 3.0Ghz HT server motherboard with a score of 802 for the sempron 145 and P4 3Ghz HT's with a score of 361 each for 722 combined. I have been able to play games like World of Warcraft, Skyrim, Aion, TeraRising, LOTR, SWTOR, and GTA SA etc with no problems. The core runs at 80 to 100% with Windows 7 64-bit and these games, but doesnt choke up. No lag when paired with a decent video card.

Cons: None ... other than not much difference between Sempron 140 and Sempron 145. The extra 100Mhz of the 145 doesn't amount to a noticable difference, so I probably could have bought a 3rd Sempron 140 2.7Ghz instead of the Sempron 145 2.8Ghz and saved $6 at the time for the 3rd low cost computer build I had.

Other Thoughts: I originally bought the Sempron 140 2.7Ghz CPUs as cheap CPUs for builds, then decided to buy this Sempron 145 2.8Ghz. For the extra $6 at the time, I probably could have just gotten another 140 instead of the 145. Not much gain in the extra 100Mhz, however I was able to overclock this CPU 10% to 3.08Ghz and it ran with no problems, and the 140 I could only get to 2.85Ghz from 2.7Ghz in which any higher and it would act up so this 145 overclocks to 10% while the 140 couldnt be pushed an extra 270Mhz to 2970Mhz, but instead could only be driven to 2912Mhz with locked multiplier and FSB changed from 200Mhz on DDR2 800Mhz to 208Mhz for a 7.28% overclock with any higher OC causing freeze framing in games and random BSOD's.

For the same money if you dont mind used, you can get a Dual-Core either AM2 or AM3 for less than $20 that will outperform this CPU.

I have since stopped buying these new in favor of used Athlon 64 x2 4450B AM2 CPU's and Athlon II x2 215 AM3 CPU's used for less than $20 each and no problems. These used CPUs benchmark 50% better for the Athlon x2 4450B ( Business Class ) Socket AM2, and 100% better for the Athlon II x2 215 Socket AM3. *Also entry level used Phenom CPUs start around the price tag of this Sempron single core that benchmark even better such as x2 and x3 Phenom CPUs that are in this price range.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat processor for the money!

Pros: very fast
Cool temps
low profile
great for everyday tasks
great for light gaming

Cons: cant run some games well

Other Thoughts: this processor is great for a very ( super) budget build. the only game it doesn't run well is Goat Simulator, but most people don't play that game anyway. this is great for minecraft i get around 30 FPS on maxed out graphics (that's pretty standard). overall great processor.

5 out of 5 eggsCheap CPU

Pros: Able to unlock 2nd core on two of the three I bought. Make sure you have a mobo with unlocking features.

Cons: Cannot overclock with the second core unlocked for some unknown reason. Able to overclock as single cpu.

Other Thoughts: I have an ASRock Mobo with GTX 650TI Windows 8.1 pro media center edition. Plays PC games just fine. Use NVidia control panel to adjust 3D settings to help with game play and use the GeForce Experience recommended settings. Inexpensive gaming machine.

5 out of 5 eggsGood CPU even for newer gaming

Pros: accualy can handle bf4 and stay under 40c as a singlecore. I bought for light gaming but it can handle most new games. I would reccomend for a budget gaming build

Cons: single core 45nm old technology

5 out of 5 eggsMy 4th and counting!

Pros: All have unlocked to Athlon II 4550e, Cheap, DDR2 and 3 memory controller, great for mining operation

Cons: nada

Other Thoughts: I have bought 4 now and all are still going strong as Ath II 4550e's. Just make sure that the mobo has unlocking and all set. Asus M488T-M, M487TD-EVO, M5A97 EVO, and this one is going in an Asus M4N68T-M for a nephew. Pairing these with 4gb of DDR3 and an HD 6770 makes a value gamer or HTPC nicely, no matter what others may say. They have all performed admirably albeit not an FX but hey for 32 bucks who cares?

5 out of 5 eggsA Good CPU for Mining

Pros: Cool. This CPU is one of the best Mining CPU out there. 45W.
Will play Facebook games with ease.... lol.

Cons: If you bought this for Mining, then there are no Cons whatsoever.

If you bought this for your gaming rig, "...why!?"

Other Thoughts: This CPU is one of the best CPUs for mining when using a Motherboard like a 990FXA-UD3. There is another CPU that uses 25W, but it's difficult to find. If you can't find that 25W CPU, then you should get this. This only applies if you are Mining for LiteCoin/BitCoin.

5 out of 5 eggsperfect

Pros: I got this as a temporary replacement for a FX-8150 which needs to be RMA'd. It actually runs pretty good in Windows 8.1, surprisingly snappy. Just gonna be using this for basic computing until I get the 8150 back.

Cons: None.

4 out of 5 eggsDollar for dollar

Pros: You get what you pay for... its not a great processor for normal heavy use, but as a miner or general use, you cant go wrong. Honestly i'm thankful AMD made a low-end AM3 processor.

Cons: Not great for normal use. Limited use after 2 years.

Other Thoughts: I just needed an AM3 processor, not big into mining, but its great for that too. Plenty of room to upgrade as well.
