AMD's Sempron 145 is a great choice for HTPCs and other applications where low noise and low heat are major factors. This would also be a great choice for remote systems used to control video walls. You could also use it for building a dedicated print server system.

This 2.8GHz processor only draws 45W of power and still has all the features that make AMD processors great. The integrated DDR2/DDR3 memory controller and HyperTransport Technology combine to enable your system to boot and load your applications quickly. It also comes with Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 technology to increase power efficiency even further.

  • newegg AMD64 Technology AMD64 technology is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance.
  • newegg Integrated DDR2/DDR3 Memory Controller The AMD Sempron 145 integrates a high-bandwidth, low-latency integrated memory controller that directly connects the processor to memory for optimum performance, low latency, and high throughput.
  • newegg HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT technology the AMD Sempron 145 enjoys 6.4GB/s system bandwidth.
  • newegg AMD Cool'n'Quiet Technology AMD's Cool'n'Quiet technology can effectively lower power consumption and enable a quieter-running system while delivering performance-on-demand.
  • newegg Enhanced Virus Protection All AMD processors equipped with AMD64 technology are Enhanced Virus Protection-enabled. Enhanced virus protection acts as a preventative measure causing viruses to be localized, short-lived, and non-contagious, eventually being flushed from system memory.

5 out of 5 eggsIncredible

Pros: I bought this out of necessity when I built my current 8350 am3+ rig. Needed a cheap compatible processor to update the bios on my new motherboard in order to support the 8350, and that was initially a huge bummer.
After using the Sempron 145 to successfully update the bios, I figured might as well experiment with some overclocking. I was able to get it to 4.0 ghz!!! And this I've learned is very common.
So instead of throwing it in the closet after the update, I had a friend of mine who couldn't afford a new computer just buy a motherboard and I threw together some old parts, ram psu etc., and of course the stock heatsink for the 8350. Voila, the cheapest and most amazing little comp. It has been running at 4.0 ghz for over a year now with no problems.

Cons: None. People very often have success unlocking a second core on the chip too, mine didn't but it can overclock to about 4.4 ghz, though 4.0 is much more stable.

Other Thoughts: Buy it and build a comp for someone in need with your old parts.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic!

Pros: Low power, low heat, potential core unlocking.

Cons: None for the price. Slow multi tasking as a single core.

Other Thoughts: Put this guy in a home made HTPC with a Radeon 6570, and 4GB's of DDR3 and its fantastic! Mine unlocked to an Athlon II and it made this little gem even better! I've done some gaming on my 720p projector, and it gets some great frame rates. Couldn't be happier.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU

Pros: CPU runs very stable and cool in my DIY server. Run 24/7 without any problems for months. Was able to unlock second core easily.

Cons: None. For HTPC or FreeNAS boxes there is no better choice on a budget. For gaming probably with go with at least Athlon II x4.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes the job!

Pros: Low power usage.
Simple and easy to install.
Good overclockability.

Cons: None really, but what would you to expect from a Sempron.

Other Thoughts: Using this processor in my Bitcoin mining rig along with two AMD Radeon 7970's. This is the cheapest and lowest power usage processor I could buy. Great deal!

5 out of 5 eggsfollowup

Pros: I'm with bkoepplinger.......He/She is right about it being smashing as the heart of a Home Theatre PC with low power and low temperatures.

I stand by my previous review but yes, a 1080p mkv file will run higher than the 720p files I first tested it on. Simple solution..turn-off or stifle other processes. I disagree with N/A and DAT ASIAN.
Before finally placing a shrunken XP Pro (using nLite and whittling it down to 200MiB) I had tested it with Win7 but W7 needs an SSD, the one I used was a Kingston 30GiB SSD Now model, still used in the HTPC and in a recent power glitch it rebooted in 9 seconds, allowing the DVR app to re-engage,missing only 12 seconds of programme material, which next day i downloaded a mkv to catchup with what i missed. Upon installation, Win7 detected it was connected to the www, without me using the driver disk and started updating itself faster than i thought it would, after which I
tried a few features, played with Mozilla etc. and it was fast, all on a 30gig drive! but it was just for test purposes, I then put on my nLited XP and resumed its' role as a HTPC.
Will do a followup as I have a second AMD board/145 waiting to replace this ageing and failing P4 workstation, need case and a new optical drive first, when done W7 will reside on an ADATA 60Gig SSD, with the second Kingston 30G merely as a backup OS. Then we'll see how it performs in day to day (non-gaming) use.

Cons: The Con is with Newegg themselves.....this product was listed at the newegg.ca site and from there is where I ordered both, for some reason is not there any more and i may want to order one or two more for when i can build my backup units.

I implore Newegg to treat the .ca and the .com sites equally and return full selection to the .ca site, in particular yje Sempron 145.

Other Thoughts: Ditto for other hardware on both sites....equal treatment!

2 out of 5 eggsCHEAP

Pros: It is a really cheap processor. It is not worth the money just spend the extra bit of money to get a nicer one.

Cons: Slow cheap

Other Thoughts: if you are trying to get a computer running it would work. however it is really slow

5 out of 5 eggsSolid, Silent Performer

Pros: I was pleasantly surprised by the efficiency of this chip. Low power does not mean low performance. In using this CPU for a test system, it carried out each task I asked it to without complaint.

Because of the low power drawn I never saw the core temperature go above 114*F after a 4 hour stress test using benchmarking software. Normal idle for me was around 85-90*F depending on the ambient room temp.

The included heatsink/fan is very short and would work well in a smaller enclosure. I never noticed an increase in audible volume from the fan when testing either.

Cons: When using very CPU intensive tasks, the single core shows its only real weakness by not being able to multi-task which results in the system bogging down.

I was able to play a 1080P .mkv file without stuttering, however the CPU load yo-yo'd from 85-100% so don't expect to watch an HD movie and use photoshop at the same time.

Other Thoughts: Although the motherboard I was using supported core unlocking, I was unfortunately not able to unlock the second core.

This CPU would make for a fantastic HTPC because of the low power/heat and relative quietness or a DIY NAS box. I can also recommend it as a basic web browsing, word processing machine, however if you are looking to play current generation games at 1080P or need to edit videos/photos I would encourage you to look a basic dual or quad core instead.

I would not recommend attempting an overclock using the stock heatsink/fan.
