The Opteron 2300 series builds upon previous generations, taking advantage of new technologies. The Opteron 2378 is a Quad-core processor that can be scaled up to 2-processors and 8-cores for unbeatable performance. The four cores run at 2.4GHz each and have 4 x 512KB of L2 cache as well as 6MB of L3 cache.

More power generates more heat. More heat requires more energy for cooling and can shorten the lifespan of the system. AMD takes a multi-pronged approach: It takes advantage of DDR2 memory, which uses 30% less energy. The new PowerNow! Technology provides power on demand by adjusting performance based on need, and can reduce power at idle by 75%.

AMD Virtualization can put an end to the one server, one application problem common to many data centers. Consolidate servers by running multiple applications on a single box. The integrated memory controller keeps memory used in each virtual machine isolated. This saves you money since you need fewer systems to do the same work your capital outlay is less -- and so is your monthly power bill. The AMD Opteron 2378 works hard for your money!

  • newegg AMD64 Quad-core Technology AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With Quad-core technology, four complete processor cores on a single die run at the same frequency to deliver exceptional multi-tasking power, allowing users to surge through the most demanding processing loads, including advanced multitasking, critical business productivity, complicated visual design and modeling, serious gaming, and visually stunning digital media and entertainment.
  • newegg Integrated DDR2 DRAM Memory Controller The AMD Opteron 2378 Quad-core processor is integrated with a DDR2 DRAM memory controller capable of supporting registered and ECC DRAM. The integrated memory controller changes the way the processor accesses main memory, resulting in increased bandwidth, reduced memory latencies, and enhanced processor performance.
  • newegg HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT technology the AMD Opteron 2378 Quad-core processor enjoys 1000MHz system bus speeds.

5 out of 5 eggsgot a great price

Pros: faster than lightning when using two. ripping and rendering is superb. think about tyans review of Nasa News release of it's using probably these cores.... 256 processsors one way or the other.

Cons: expensive now. went up $30 bucks.
You missed out.

Other Thoughts: I really like these run real fast.

5 out of 5 eggsDo your homework

Pros: great processor, fast. Price is steep but will overlook for now.

Don't use on Supermicro H8DA3-2 Motherboard!!!! I don't care if you do flash the Bios with upgrade.

It will power Off and it'll make you think either your powersupply is down or motherboard died. Just do some research. This review should help clear the path.

Cons: Too much for my motherboard after a few days. No Cons except finding an accompanying mobo isn't fun when rushed. It will have to sit and wait for a while with it's buddy and soon the two will fly again...

Other Thoughts: It doesn't last long on my motherboard. I will have to upgrade my MOBO to fit two of these. so sad, I had the previous review with the 2212HE's and I have to consider a rebuild or stay with what I have for this machine and get second mobo eventually to house these comfortably.

5 out of 5 eggsHauler

Pros: It is a work-horse with four cores. I Mainly use as a workstation. Rendering Maya is really solid and stable. That's only one processor. I will get another when prices drop a little, or when I get a tax refund. I can't wait to buy another one.

This is Awesome upgrade from Santa Rosa 2212HE
2.0 GHZ dual core Opteron. I had two of them and this processor beats both of those combined.

Supermicro H8DA3-2A Mobo, make sure you flash the bios Before you install a quad core Shanghai processor!!! I actually had to buy a 3.5" floppy A: I can't believe it. Back to the Old School.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I wish it was cheaper so I could get another one... Maybe Newegg will lower the cost for Christmas so I can get a second for my lonely processor on the Motherboard.

Newegg and UPS Rock, even though UPS had a minor setback, they still delivered, not on time, but in a dedicated manner.

I will use the SantaRosa dual cores for family machines on the next few builds.
