AMD Opteron processors also offer support for Virtualization Technology. You can run virtual environments on one system with ease, allowing you to use legacy programs on a separate operating system. Opteron processors also allow for extended migration of virtual machines between physical machines running AMD Opteron processors. Add the convenience and power of multi-core processing and enjoy the benefits of energy efficiency with an AMD Opteron 6172 today!

  • newegg Twelve-Core The AMD Opteron 6172 integrates of up to 12 cores within the same package with each core having its own L1 and L2 caches as well as shared 12MB L3 cache, offering improved performance and performance/watt (compared to prior generations) for multithreaded environments like virtualization, database, and web serving.
  • newegg Advanced Power Management The AMD Opteron 6172 boasts AMD CoolCore technology, AMD PowerNow! technology, Enhanced C1 state, AMD CoolSpeed technology, APML (in APML enabled platforms) for unprecedented power efficiency.
  • newegg Multiple Memory Support The AMD Opteron 6172 supports Quad-Channel LV & U/RDDR 3, ECC, and supports for on-line spare memory, up to 3 DIMMs/channel and 12 DIMMs per CPU, which helps to reduce overall power consumption and improve overall system performance.
  • newegg AMD64 with Direct Connect Architecture 2.0 AMD64 technology allows the Opteron 6172 processor to run 32-bit applications at full speed while enabling a new generation of powerful 64-bit software applications. Moreover, the Opteron 6172 is built on AMD’s revolutionary Direct Connect Architecture, where processors are directly connected to one another. An I/O and memory subsystem are also directly connected to each processor, helping improve overall system performance and efficiency.
  • newegg HyperTransport 3.0 Technology with HT Assist HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. HT 3.0 technology offers the processor up to a maximum 6.4GT/s interconnect rate. HT Assist helps to increase coherent memory bandwidth and reduce latency in multi-node systems by reducing cache probe traffic between cores, resulting in faster queries that can increase performance for cache sensitive applications such as database, virtualization, and compute intensive applications.
  • newegg AMD Virtualization (AMD-V) 2.0 Virtualization allows multiple operating systems, applications, or user sessions to run simultaneously on a single computing system. AMD Virtualization (AMD-V) is a set of unique on-chip features that help AMD processor-based servers and clients run multiple operating systems and applications on a single machine by improving the efficiency of virtualization software. AMD-V technology allows you to better utilize your resources, which makes your client systems, servers, and datacenters more effective.

5 out of 5 eggsHUGE UPGRADE

Pros: Bought these for a server build at work. AMD guy here, I always go for the underdog so I wanted a server that wouldn't disappoint! I have 2 of these on a Tyan motherboard with 32GB of RAM (Max 2008 R2 Standard will support). This thing is insane. I love sitting and watching to see what the max CPU load is through task manager, very rarely will exceed 5% usage. Mind you this isn't just a file server. On the host OS I am running ADDS with Hyper-V. There are 8 virtual servers running Exchange 2010 SP1, SQL Server Standard 2008 R2, Windows Deplyments Services, WSUS, Terminal Services with RemoteApp, and file and print services alongside other things, this thing just never complains. Takes it all with no fuss, had it running for 60 days without shutting it down with no problems at all. Highly recommend this build.

Cons: Some people will buy this for gaming when it is clearly a number cruncher and will never truly see its full potential.

Other Thoughts: I was impatient and didn't wait for the 16 cores, but after seeing what 2 12 cores can do, I don't really care. Although 32 CPUs would look amazing in task manager :-)

5 out of 5 eggsSupercomputing power for the masses!

Pros: 1. 12 cores = lots of Si for the dollar.
2. Expandable, 4 socket motherboards for 48 cores!
3. Upgradable, AMD has socket G34 on their roadmap for several years, you should be able to upgrade to the 8/16 core 32nm Bulldozers with just a BIOS update for a possible 64 cores on a single board!

Cons: There is not much available in the way of motherboards right now but that problem should resolve in the next few months. Even finding a heat sink can be difficult, Newegg only had one active cooler when I bought mine.

Other Thoughts: I bought this CPU to crunch on BOINC. I am running it on a Supermicro H8SGL with 16 GB of Kingston ECC ram. The system loaded Linux and BIONC without any problems and has been crunching for a week without a hiccup. After more boards become available I plan to move it to a two or four socket board. I have to admit that my first PC was based on an AMD 386DX-40 so I have always been a fan of AMD’s price performance ratio. That being said, I have built hundreds of systems over the years with both AMD and Intel CPUs and they both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Both companies are making a great product today depending on what you want to do and that just benefits the consumer even more.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: This processor has twice the cores than the i7 980x for the same price. And it has a lower TDP at 115 watts than the 4 core 965 BE at 125 watts and has only a quarter of the number of cores.

Cons: Has a relatively low clock speed of only 2.1 Ghz.

Other Thoughts: It's obvious that people who are Intel fans are using the helpful or unhelpful "no" button to editorialize their dislike for AMD and people who like their AMD purchase similar to thumbing down comments in a forum. There is no other explanation for the extreme number of negative helpfuls other than spite by Intel fans. Newegg claims they do not allow editorial comments. But we will see if Newgg continues to allow anti AMD editorials through the unhelpful indication button while disallowing my comment pointing this out.

5 out of 5 eggsVirtualization!!

Pros: Glad to see AMD is back in the game...magny-cours needed to really come out 6 months ago, but its perfect timing to compete against westmere. Glad there is competition again, especially against Intel's highly touted HT..

Cons: Needed to come out sooner....but its here now!

Other Thoughts: Can't wait to get 2 for heavy virtualization project, these things should smoke!

5 out of 5 eggsWow

Pros: I bet it can handle databases like there's no tomorrow; I can already hear the system administrators licking their lips.

Cons: Half of them will probably be sold to basement dwellers thinking they'll get that extra 1 FPS in Crysis with it.

Other Thoughts: Intel fanboy I may be, but here's to AMD finally inserting some competition back into the server market.
