Powerful Processor, Great Performance
Pros: I put this processor in an Asus KGPE-D16 motherboard as CPU #1. I also installed 32 Gb of memory. I have not installed CPU #2 yet. It is a drop-in processing powerhouse. This is quite affordable compared to Intel Xeon processors, which are simply too pricey. Installation is very easy to do: just very gently pop it in the socket per the instructions that came with your motherboard. No force is really required at all. Think carefully about which cpu cooler you decide to use. A 120mm cooler, for example, will most likely not fit in a 4U chassis. The packaging box is frustration-free which is very good.
Cons: The packaging used by AMD for the processor box is small and I am not sure if the processor will be damaged if the box is dropped accidentally. Also, AMD unfortuntely does not publish videos showing how to install this processor. I also wish this processor were available for less than $1,000.
Other Thoughts: I think the G34 socket design allows the Opteron to do a better job of heat dissipation simply because there is more surface area on the metal top shell of he processor. The processor seems to run nice and cool even with a smaller form factor cpu cooler. I still wish I could use my 120mm monster sized cooler just to be quite certain the Opteron is cooled down.
