The 45nm processor spec goes mobile with the Core 2 Duo P8700. You get top end notebook performance while drawing only 25W. Lower power means lower heat and longer battery life without taking a performance hit. Intel was also able to pack more features into the chip. This is boosted by the Intelligent Power Capability which manages CPU power loads to further increase battery life.

L2 cache has been bumped to 3MB and the Front Side Bus has been pushed to 1066MHz. They also boosted memory access and execution speed with the Wide Dynamic Execution and Smart Memory Access. These combine to let the processor compute more instructions with more data per clock cycle. You'd better watch out those in game enemies will be shooting back faster now.

The Advanced Digital Media Boost feature has been enhanced with the addition of the SSE4 instruction set and Intel HD Boost. This will give your entertainment experience a boost with better audio and video processing. It will also help with speech recognition, engineering and scientific applications. Perhaps most important of all will be the boost to security with increased encryption power and speed.

  • newegg Specialized Dual-core Microarchitecture The Intel Core 2 Duo processor includes two execution cores in a single physical package to enable execution of parallel threads or applications on separate cores with dedicated CPU resources. The results enable outstanding dual-core performance and greater system response when running multi-threaded or multiple demanding applications simultaneously. The innovative 45nm dual-core technology optimizes thermal performance for reduced power consumption and noise.
  • newegg Intel Centrino 2 Duo Mobile Technology Intel Centrino 2 Duo mobile technology has just gotten a mobility upgrade with the new Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processor. Its advanced capabilities provide twice the multitasking performance with improved energy efficiency for enhanced battery life so you get the benefits of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility.
  • newegg Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T) Intel EM64T provides an enhancement to Intel 32-bit architecture by enabling the mobile processor platform to access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit supporting hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel EM64T can enable use of extended virtual and physical memory.
  • newegg Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) EIST allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to decrease average power consumption and average heat production. Combined with existing power saving features, EIST may provide an excellent balance between providing power when you need it and conserving power when you don’t.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple "virtual" platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows creating unique user environments for multiple family members using the same platform simultaneously.

5 out of 5 eggsLove It!

Pros: Have had this processor in my school supplied laptop since March of 2009 and I can say with absolute honesty that this thing has never done be wrong. adequately fast for everyday computing and websurfing and really not all that bad at playing games either. She gets me a Windows 7 score of 6.1 stock clock, so thats not too bad.

Cons: Seems to run a bit hot, as I'm typing right now it's idling about 40C. my room is 68 degrees F.

But that's really nitpicking. I love this thing!

Other Thoughts: This processor took 20 seconds to calculate 1 million places of pi on the SuperPi bench and 19:30min to calculate 32 million places. Compare these times to a 4ghz overclocked AMD Phenom II x6 1090T which scored 17.5s and 18:06mins. That's amazing for a little dual core!

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT!

Pros: Runs cool! Easy to install. Great upgrade from original CPU. Runs any game i throw at it . CPUZ says it running at 2.66 not over clocked right out of the box. New Egg was fast with shipping as always.

Cons: Not a big CON but Core 2 CPUS should be less considering i7 and i5 CPUS are out and not to much more money. Wish it had 6mb of cash.

Other Thoughts: I have this in a Asus g60vx..original CPU was a T7450 2.13mhz... that got a 5.9 windows score over clocked at 2.33mhz...Ive got this CPU clocked at 2.9mhz and gets a windoes score of 6.4. Runs idle at a cool 28c with MX-2 thermal paste.

4 out of 5 eggsMore than enough.

Pros: Quick responsiveness and ample headroom in conjunction with the ASUS G71GX. Easily overclocked to 2.9Ghz with the ASUS software and ran every game I could find to throw at it. (yes it can play Crysis) I only saw it stumble in a few highly threaded instances; Decoding HD video from Blu-Ray and compressing old files simultaneously.

Cons: Only when loaded with heavily threaded applications did any form of noticeable lag appear.

Other Thoughts: I switched to the laptop after my Quad-FX system refused to boot. It was my first laptop experience since a CoreDuo D*LL got stolen. I was supremely impressed with the improved performance of the Core2Duo over the original Core components.

5 out of 5 eggsFirst Experience with a mobile processor

Pros: Not too slow for basic use, you can get stuff done with it.
Cool as far as Mobile processors go... I think?

Cons: 3MB Cache as opposed to the 6MB in the 9600?
Only works in mobile motherboards?

...yeah.... moving on.

Other Thoughts: Its the base processor for the HDX 18, and I didn't feel the need to spend 50 extra dollars to go from 2.53GHz to 2.66; nor did I see a need to go to the 6MB cache one. it scores a 5.4 in Vista, although I'd like to know whatanything faster would get.

Eitherway I'm pleased with the performance; as long as you don't try killing the thing; it should be good enough.
