AMD proudly presents the new AMD Opteron 6200 Series—the world’s first and only 16-core x86 server processor with the highest core density for incredible scalability to handle demanding multi-threaded workloads such as cloud computing, virtualization, high-performance computing (HPC), databases and business applications.

The innovative modular architecture helps pack in more cores, making it the natural choice for heavy-threaded cloud computing environments and enterprise applications that demand outstanding performance and scalability.

  • newegg NEW CORE ARCHITECTURE Drives More Core Density and Greater Throughput The modular design features up to 33% more cores and 35% greater performance in a smaller silicon footprint than AMD’s current products, bringing high performance throughput for scalable computing environments like virtualization, HPC, web/cloud clusters and database applications. AMD has designed several new features, including AMD Turbo CORE technology, ISA Enhancements and Flex FP, into its processors so that datacenters can maximize their performance potential.
  • newegg AMD TURBO CORE TECHNOLOGY AMD Turbo CORE Technology allows processors to independently boost their clock speeds, scaling frequency up 500MHz-1GHz automatically to respond to the need for more application performance.
  • newegg AMD-P 2.0 The AMD-P suite of energy-efficient technologies helps customers maximize the performance per watt in their datacenter and can help lower power and cooling costs. TDP Power Cap allows user to set the maximum processor power ceiling via BIOS or APML to meet power and workload demands. C6 Power State reduces processor power consumption at active idle by up to 37% while AMD CoolSpeed Technology protects processor integrity by reducing power-states, when a temperature limit is reached. Other features include C1E, LV-DDR3 support and APML (Advanced Platform Management Link) which provides an interface for processor and systems management monitoring and controlling of system resources (in APML-enabled platforms).
  • newegg HYPERTRANSPORT 3.0 TECHNOLOGY WITH HT ASSIST HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. HT 3.0 technology offers the processor up to a maximum 6.4GT/s interconnect rate. HT Assist helps to increase coherent memory bandwidth and reduce latency in multi-node systems by reducing cache probe traffic between cores, resulting in faster queries that can increase performance for cache sensitive applications such as database, virtualization, and compute intensive applications.
  • newegg Quad Channel Memory Support The AMD Opteron 6200 Series supports quad-channel memory (U/RDDR3, ULV RDDR3 and LRDIMM) that delivers up to 102.4 GB/s memory bandwidth per CPU for Socket G34 for increased performance especially in memory-intensive workloads. LR-DIMMs provide more capacity per DIMM, which can enable higher overall server memory configurations. Virtualization, cloud computing and other high-capacity applications greatly benefit from LR-DIMMs.
  • newegg AMD VIRTUALIZATION (AMD-V) 2.0 AMD Virtualization (AMD-V) is a set of unique on-chip features that help AMD processor-based servers and clients run multiple operating systems and applications on a single machine by improving the efficiency of virtualization software. AMD Virtualization (AMD-V) Technology 2.0 heightens virtualization efficiency with new enhancements to the AMD-V suite of virtualization to optimize data center rack space and help minimize management tasks.

5 out of 5 eggs8 real cores

Pros: Modest cost, low power, high chip-count motherboards. Scales well.

Cons: Only 8 FPUs causes resource contention and decreases performance above 1 thread per 2 "cores."

Other Thoughts: Overall performance is very comparable to E5-2620 for truly parallel work (either FP or integer). The 6272 is slightly (10%) slower up to 1 thread per FPU, but finishes slightly (10%) faster at 2 threads per CPU.

As others have noted: the point of this chip is parallelism. If your application doesn't parallelize well, this won't help.

5 out of 5 eggsWorkstation Build

Pros: Very fast and reliable processor. Strong and is able to get the job well done.

Cons: I wish they didn't charge so much more for the ones that are .1 GHz more.

Other Thoughts: This was used for a very expensive workstation computer. The computer was made for 3-D design & modeling, professional video editing, and much more.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: With the right software, everything parallels very well. I am using 2 of these in a simulation machine, and have extremely minimized my computational time. Also, I am using the Noctura air coolers, and even after hours at 100% CPU usage, they are sitting at less than 35 C.

Cons: Power rating is a little high, but as mentioned, these processors cool extremely well. 2.1 GHz is a little slow, but with 16 cores, the work gets done very efficiently.

Other Thoughts: Absolutely awesome processor

5 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Chugs right along.

Cons: Price (sort of, if you know what you're gettting and why its worth it)

Other Thoughts: Bought four of these for a folding workstation. I get at least 500,000 PPD with big advanced work units. Consistently very fast and stable.

5 out of 5 eggsvery fast

Pros: Very affordable server CPU compared to other AMD or intel CPUs. I use 2 of these CPUs on an asus kgpe-d16 motherboard to render in fractal extreme, which using almost only integer (high-precision) operations. Rendering is very fast. With the 16 integer cores this is really the right tool for the job for integer operations. 32 Cores in total to work with is a really powerful setup.

Cons: Less effective for floating-point operations.

Other Thoughts: Be careful before you buy this CPU. It's amazing for specific purposes, but not for everything.

5 out of 5 eggsserver cpu

Pros: great server cpu

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: i wish people would realize that this is a server cpu, when using a physical host server to run a certain amount of virtual servers, the cores are divided up between them, this is a good processor when needing to run around ten virtual servers, this cpu is not for gaming, and if your going to get a gaming cpu, get a a quad core amd fx or somthing.

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent

Pros: high throughput, greatest flops per unit cost on one board means cheap, large shared memory system and hence reduced interconnect, power and rackspace costs - and incredible performance where shared memory and high throughput are required.

Cons: none. assuming you know what it is actually for.

Other Thoughts: we have trialed a 4 way interlagos system running SL6.2 and AMDs libraries and found considerable improvement over previous offering on a per core basis (and we get 16 more cores on the same bridge).

this will not help you run internet explorer or computer games. It will help you with high throughput (i.e. occupancy) and/or consistently parallel tasks, and it does so with 64 cores sharing a memory space. So your infiniband costs are lowered, rackspace reduced, power reduced. there are more MIPs on a 4 way interlagos than anything else, provided you are doing it right.

a tank wont win any races. but it will drive right over ten ferraris lined up in a row without any problems.

please do not review an item if you do not really understand what it is for or how to program/use/administer/optimze it. this one is not for the lulz. of *course* a chip with fewer cores will have faster cores given the same 32nm process. get that instead if it's right for you.

5 out of 5 eggsGood multithreading chip -- Follow up

Pros: This is a follow up review to my previous review.

Great power management with the windows patches for the bulldozer architecture. The windows patches lowered idle power usage by another 20 watts. Power usage is lower at maximum power as it was before on balanced.

Continues to be very stable. Running on Asus KGPE-D16 with 64GB of DDR3-1600.

Cons: Hoped for more of a performance boost from the Windows bulldozer patches. At maximum performance settings, getting about a 3-5% boost compared to before the patches. However, the change in power efficency is pretty amazing.

Other Thoughts: With the bulldozer patches that enable full core parking, you can run the server at maximum performance power settings with only a 2-3% increase in power usage. This then fully exploits the turbo mode for the processor. Maximum power setting yeild a very tangible increase in performance.

Energy usage for the processor, cooler, fans, power supply, 7 SSDs, sound card, 64GB RAM, GTX 460 graphics, and motherboard is 95-100 watts idle at the plug. With 5 spindle drives powered up, it adds another 30+ watts.

5 out of 5 eggsGood stuff

Pros: Ignore neostile's review. He holds an artificial fanboy allegiance to Intel and attacks anything that poses a threat.

This is not the best new Opteron, but it is the best one on newegg. This performs on par with a $1000+ Xeon. This is the one Bulldozer CPU that shows real promise. This is great for high-end home servers, high-load business servers and even webservers.

Expect intel to drop their prices very soon.

Cons: Not as fast as it could be, although the server manufacturers are still eating them up. Wait for piledriver if you want more speed.

Other Thoughts: Worked with these in the recent month.
