New microarchitecture, new level of performance

Piledriver microarchitecture, a tuned-up Bulldozer, has finally reached the flagship AMD FX processors (the new FX series processors are codenamed as Vishera) for improved performance and better energy-efficiency. Up to eight “Piledriver” cores ensure unrivaled multitasking and pure core performance. The AMD Turbo Core technology pushes your core frequencies to the most when you need it most. To top it off, like all other AMD’s Black Edition processors, the new AMD FX 8-core Vishera processor black edition is unlocked for fabulous overclocking* capability.  Unrivaled performance is not the only trick AMD has up their sleeve. Vishera processors are at a reasonable price point. (*AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.)

  • newegg New Piledriver microarchitecture Piledriver microarchitecture is the second generation of AMD Bulldozer microarchitecture. The internal core structure has been modified for higher frequencies even without any changes in the manufacturing process. Piledriver has a more precise branch predictor and a larger instruction window with ISA extensions FMA3 and F16C. The execution units acquired an enhanced scheduler and learned to process individual instructions faster, such as integer and floating-point division. And Piledriver microarchitecture delivers higher power efficiency compared with Bulldozer microarchitecture.
  • newegg Unlocked AMD FX processor with 8 Piledriver cores The native 8-core desktop processor delivers unrivaled multitasking and pure core performance with the new Piledriver microarchitecture. 32 nanometer die shrink was designed to reduce leakage for improved efficiency, increased clock rate headroom and better thermals. The AMD unlocked technology offers more headroom for your overclocking (AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.).
  • newegg AMD Turbo technology The AMD FX Processors come equipped with AMD Turbo CORE Technology, a performance boosting technology that helps increase performance on the applications that need it the most.
  • newegg Amazing instruction capabilities Like Bulldozer, Piledriver has some amazing instruction capabilities. Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) increase parallelism tailored for scientific and 3D applications that use heavy floating point calculations. Floating Point Vector Multiply-Accumulate improves throughput and performance on many vector functions (integer and floating point). Advanced Encryption Standard noticeably increases performance on the latest encryption applications like TrueCrypt and benchmarks like PCMark.
  • newegg AMD Hypertransport technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link which helps reduce the number of buses in a system thus reducing system bottlenecks and enabling today's faster microprocessors to use system memory more efficiently in high-end multiprocessor systems.
  • newegg Integrated DRAM Controller with AMD Memory Optimizer Technology AMD FX Vishera Processor features a high-bandwidth, low-latency integrated memory controller that supports faster and low voltage memories and provides new Pre-Fetcher improvements and direct communications to each core in Dual-Core module (APIC registers in each core).

3 out of 5 eggsLess than expected

Pros: Good stock core speed
Good use of cores

Cons: Runs HOT
Stock cooler does not suffice for proper cooling

Other Thoughts: for some reason, the CPU I received had gouges and scratches on the surface.

Will be lapping the surface here soon.

Would like to see better CS from AMD.

4 out of 5 eggsHorrible Fan, Great Processor

Pros: Super fast, handles anything you throw at it

Cons: The heatsink fan is absolutely terrible, as some others were saying. The stock one needs to be replaced immediately. The idea of the manufacturer continuing to sell this processor with this heatsink is inexcusable. If your considering buying this processor, make sure your budget includes a higher grade cooling unit. (which isn't saying much)

Other Thoughts: BUY A NEW FAN

5 out of 5 eggsA economical powerhouse

Pros: With my recent build of my 2nd PC I decided to stick to my guns with an AMD CPU. My previous FX-4350 was a fantastic chip; fast, overclock ready, and at a reasonable price. The FX-8350 is set to give me the same fantastic service that the FX-4350 , also at an economic price. The 8350 destroys multithreaded applications as well as the most modern games. I can render 720p video at 60 FPS in almost real time in sony vegas, and i have not even tried 1080p yet! I get consistent 60 FPS or above in games like Watch_Dogs, Far Cry 3, Metro: Last Light and Battlefield 4. The 8350 is also; like most AMD chipsets, an overclocking champ. The FX-8350 shows the way of the future; which is multithreaded programs and games. When developers start to utilize more than 4 cores, CPUs like the 8350 will shine. If you need an economic solution to your high end gaming needs look no further than the FX-8350.

Cons: Now to be fair, the 8350 is beaten by Intel's haswell series i7 chipsets in singlethreaded performance. Also The 8350 is a hot running chip. Make sure you have a decent cooling solution, especially if you want to overclock. The stock heat sink will not cut it. Also the stock heat sink is really loud.

Other Thoughts: The FX-8350 is a fast, reasonably priced CPU that runs as hot mt. Fuji. I wholeheartedly recommend it. Also note that this 8350 was paired with a 4gb GTX-770 and 16gb of 2400MHz Mushkin redline RAM, If any first time builders where wondering.

4 out of 5 eggsSo LOUD

Pros: Great speed, helps a ton with CPU heavy games like BF4.

Cons: I didn't think it would be so loud. Most people are really pick about how loud a CPU fan is... I thought they were just being picky. No. This thing sounds like a C130 is taking off in my room. It's an UNBEARABLY loud sound. If I wasn't broke I'd throw this heatsink in the garbage right now. REPLACE THE STOCK IMMEDIATELY.

5 out of 5 eggsFlies

Pros: This puppy flies. Has no temp problems or problems with heavy loads.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Used this to build a machine for a friend of mine. This thing chews up everything in its path. He has had it now for over a year and has no issues at all and it stays nice and cool even under heavy stress.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU, horrible fan

Pros: Fast octocore CPU. AMD hasn't let me down on this one.

Cons: The fan is HORRIBLE. The stock fan rattles and is super loud under load and I can hear it from across the room even on Idle. I just ordered a Hyper 212 Evo to replace it. At first I disregarded it thinking that it couldn't be that bad but it is.

5 out of 5 eggsBoom

Pros: Bought to replace an aging 6 core 3.2 and I always said that if they ever make a 4.0+ 8 core then I could justify the upgrade. Well here we are. I'm an audio producer and our CPU *is* our creativity meter. The impact this made wasn't surprisingly as dramatic as I hoped under load with a big project going, but I learned a lot about which plugins use mutlithreading and which don't. Rendering times are dramatically shorter so if anything it was worth the upgrade here. In gaming I don't notice too much of a difference because I still haven't gotten a new card, but I can only imagine the crunch time on strategy games will be much lower. The one big HUGE difference I did notice is that this thing just eats transcoding alive and wants more. PS3 Media Server went from me tolerating a skip or pause now and then on a 720p video to a 1080p full quality video transcoding in seconds. This is amazing considering I was told by so many people that my bandwidth was the reason this would lag or the devices weren't good enough.. those people were wrong and should feel bad. I think I would have paid the price of this CPU just for that ability alone considering how many devices we've gone through trying to find a reliable media solution that just worked with everything. Also OCed this to 4.3 by moving one setting and I"m pretty OC illiterate. I can see getting much higher with careful experimentation but that's quite enough considering its now over 1ghz and 2 cores more than my previous CPU.

Cons: Stock cooler went in the closet. Obviously no one serious about their CPU will use these ever.

Turbo sounds great on paper, but it's a nightmare with audio software and will cause audio program crashes and blue screens due to throttling. Disable it and slightly overclock (its super easy) if you really want the 4.2 and more stability to boot

Other Thoughts: Paired with Hyper 212 Evo nicely.

5 out of 5 eggsGood CPU

Pros: I like this processor. I replaced a FX-4100 that I bought 3 years ago. This was a good upgrade. I haven't gotten to do much with OC'ing yet but I don't see any reason to at the moment. Overall this is a good value and I think AMD is just as capable as its Intel counterparts.

Cons: Runs a little warm. That probably has more to do with my substandard cooler and poor air flow than a problem with the CPU itself.

4 out of 5 eggsFx-8350 Review

Pros: It runs pretty much anything I run at it, coupled with a R9 280x, it has been more than enough to run any current games.

Cons: The only thing is the stock cooler does run really hot and rather loud. So I would recommend replacing this before running it a lot.
