New microarchitecture, new level of performance

Piledriver microarchitecture, a tuned-up Bulldozer, has finally reached the flagship AMD FX processors (the new FX series processors are codenamed as Vishera) for improved performance and better energy-efficiency. Up to eight “Piledriver” cores ensure unrivaled multitasking and pure core performance. The AMD Turbo Core technology pushes your core frequencies to the most when you need it most. To top it off, like all other AMD’s Black Edition processors, the new AMD FX 8-core Vishera processor black edition is unlocked for fabulous overclocking* capability.  Unrivaled performance is not the only trick AMD has up their sleeve. Vishera processors are at a reasonable price point. (*AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.)

  • newegg New Piledriver microarchitecture Piledriver microarchitecture is the second generation of AMD Bulldozer microarchitecture. The internal core structure has been modified for higher frequencies even without any changes in the manufacturing process. Piledriver has a more precise branch predictor and a larger instruction window with ISA extensions FMA3 and F16C. The execution units acquired an enhanced scheduler and learned to process individual instructions faster, such as integer and floating-point division. And Piledriver microarchitecture delivers higher power efficiency compared with Bulldozer microarchitecture.
  • newegg Unlocked AMD FX processor with 8 Piledriver cores The native 8-core desktop processor delivers unrivaled multitasking and pure core performance with the new Piledriver microarchitecture. 32 nanometer die shrink was designed to reduce leakage for improved efficiency, increased clock rate headroom and better thermals. The AMD unlocked technology offers more headroom for your overclocking (AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.).
  • newegg AMD Turbo technology The AMD FX Processors come equipped with AMD Turbo CORE Technology, a performance boosting technology that helps increase performance on the applications that need it the most.
  • newegg Amazing instruction capabilities Like Bulldozer, Piledriver has some amazing instruction capabilities. Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) increase parallelism tailored for scientific and 3D applications that use heavy floating point calculations. Floating Point Vector Multiply-Accumulate improves throughput and performance on many vector functions (integer and floating point). Advanced Encryption Standard noticeably increases performance on the latest encryption applications like TrueCrypt and benchmarks like PCMark.
  • newegg AMD Hypertransport technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link which helps reduce the number of buses in a system thus reducing system bottlenecks and enabling today's faster microprocessors to use system memory more efficiently in high-end multiprocessor systems.
  • newegg Integrated DRAM Controller with AMD Memory Optimizer Technology AMD FX Vishera Processor features a high-bandwidth, low-latency integrated memory controller that supports faster and low voltage memories and provides new Pre-Fetcher improvements and direct communications to each core in Dual-Core module (APIC registers in each core).

4 out of 5 eggsGreat processor, but not comparable to Intel's high-end

Pros: - Relatively inexpensive
- Overclocks well

Cons: - Not a true "Eight-Core"
- Runs hot
- Really doesn't like some games

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a gaming rig, I'd recommend you spend the extra $100 or $150 to get an Intel 4690K or 4770K. I have an ATI R9 280X, 256GB SSD, 16GB DDR31866MHz, and this processor is my bottleneck in games.

Had I had the money at the time, I'd have purchased a 3770K or 4770K.

5 out of 5 eggsDA SHIZIT!!!

Pros: SUPER SPEED! Best processor I have EVER had!

Cons: Processor gets hot really quick... Recommend a liquid cooling unit. EXPECIALLY running it as a gaming PC.

Other Thoughts: I swear by AMD. Would recommend the three year warranty just in case.

Pros: for the 15 years ive been building computers, ive only used intel. recently my motherboard crapped out on me and i was force to do another build. i was on a budget and wanted to try out amd and see how this 8 core 4.0GHz was all about. after installing windows 8.1 64bit, i must say im impressed! i dont play games on my computer anymore but i do a lot of video editing. the rendering is great!!! im truly happy with AMD for this great product!!! i still love my intel cpu's but if you want the bang for your buck AMD is the way to go!!!!!

Cons: none so far!!!

5 out of 5 eggsSolid processor (but you already knew that)

Pros: Cool and Quiet drops the cores down so that there isn't a constant high temp issue and this thing can handle anything I throw at it so far.

Running at average of 30C with Cooler Master Seidon 120M with Cool and Quiet and someplace around 40C at idle without cool and quiet.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Heard of issues with temps on VRM/Mosfet due to the power and temps this thing puts off. So far no problems running the below configuration.

MSI 970 Gaming
8GB of Mushkin Ridgeback 2133 (MemoryModel 997167R)
8350 non-overclocked
Cooler Master Seidon 120M (sealed liquid cooler)
Geforce 465 GTX
EVGA 750W Gold Plus Supernova
Areca 1224-8i (Raid card)
Mushkin 120GB Chronos for boot
Samsung Evo 120GB for game drive

Ran Prime 95 for 1.5 hours on torture test. With the 120MM fan on full blast the proc got to 49C for each core and the Mobo got to 43C. I generally run the fan at 1/2 spped and the liquid cooler is practically silent.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Chip, Great Price

Pros: Easily Overclocked to 4.6.

Cons: Heat issues past 4.6 but that was due to the Extreme9 motherboard. I would go with an MSI/Gigabyte/Asus board for this chip.

Other Thoughts: Highly recommended!!!

5 out of 5 eggsTwo word: Need better power disribution for this puppy

Pros: This cpu has run very well for me on a gigabyte 970a-ud3p MB with a 8+2 vrm and the new digital power controller.
have a CM 212 with 2 fans and artic sliver 5 running at 4.7gz for 4 months now, ide 18c, average temp is about 30c to 35c, game play hits the lower 40c, the crazy 8 core 1hr stress test at 100% bum it up to 55.6c, 4 different temp software and a thermal gun to validate temperatures.
keep in mind that its in a CM 922 case with 3 200mm fans.
keep in mind that I have a 750w power supply with 4 18a-12v rails running this puppy

Cons: the only thing I could not verified was power consumption but I read on the web it could go up to a whopping 300w + MB+ V card, you get the picture.

Other Thoughts: you can get out of it what you put in , just like in real live.
don't but a V8 engine in a mini kia and get mad wend all it does is burn rubber.

4 out of 5 eggsTwo words: Thermal Throttling

Pros: 8 Integer Cores
suspected microcode fixes
Better memory bandwidth than Phenom II

Cons: Hot, even at stock speed with turbo disabled
Tried using CM Hyper 212 EVO - not cool enough
Upgraded to Noctua NH-D14 - not cool enough!
Swapped out the Noctua's fans for faster - better but CPU still throttles.

Thermal throttle: when CPU core/package hits 65 C, clock throttles down from 4000 (stock with Turbo disabled) to 1400 and then dithers between the two. This currently happens around 85% load. ( Was happening at 60% load with the Hyper 212 EVO)

Looks like Water cooling will be required to get this (particular) CPU to run at stock speed without thermal throttling.

Other Thoughts: "suspected microcode fixes" involves a hang at the POST screen, after a raid card's BIOS loaded -- used to happen with Phenom II, doesn't happen with FX-8350 in otherwise identical system -- probable Errata

AMD Overdrive is something of a joke. The CPU temps reflected (by "Thermal Margin" or delta between current temp and some mythical red line) show 20 to 25 C "headroom" left when the thermal throttling kicks in. There's no way this chip could ever hit the limit (unless throttling is disabled, which probably voids the warranty)

Unless this chip was designed to run throttled at high load, it's possible that mine has excessive leakage current (and should have been binned lower).

Never had thermal issues with Phenom II x4, even OC'd to 4GHz

5 out of 5 eggsThe CPU that rocks

Pros: Great processor for the money. No longer gaming like I used to but this cpu still does an excellent job when paired with a decent similar classed gpu. Owned this cpu since Dec 2102, not a single problem in a machine that is on 24/7. I've personally built over 60 rigs [all AMD] the last 14 years and this cpu has been my main one for the longest stretch in that time period.

Cons: you are not going to win any benchmark titles with this, even when it was new but then again, you might not find a better bang for your buck. Has not gone down in price in 2 years.
