New microarchitecture, new level of performance

Piledriver microarchitecture, a tuned-up Bulldozer, has finally reached the flagship AMD FX processors (the new FX series processors are codenamed as Vishera) for improved performance and better energy-efficiency. Up to eight “Piledriver” cores ensure unrivaled multitasking and pure core performance. The AMD Turbo Core technology pushes your core frequencies to the most when you need it most. To top it off, like all other AMD’s Black Edition processors, the new AMD FX 8-core Vishera processor black edition is unlocked for fabulous overclocking* capability.  Unrivaled performance is not the only trick AMD has up their sleeve. Vishera processors are at a reasonable price point. (*AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.)

  • newegg New Piledriver microarchitecture Piledriver microarchitecture is the second generation of AMD Bulldozer microarchitecture. The internal core structure has been modified for higher frequencies even without any changes in the manufacturing process. Piledriver has a more precise branch predictor and a larger instruction window with ISA extensions FMA3 and F16C. The execution units acquired an enhanced scheduler and learned to process individual instructions faster, such as integer and floating-point division. And Piledriver microarchitecture delivers higher power efficiency compared with Bulldozer microarchitecture.
  • newegg Unlocked AMD FX processor with 8 Piledriver cores The native 8-core desktop processor delivers unrivaled multitasking and pure core performance with the new Piledriver microarchitecture. 32 nanometer die shrink was designed to reduce leakage for improved efficiency, increased clock rate headroom and better thermals. The AMD unlocked technology offers more headroom for your overclocking (AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.).
  • newegg AMD Turbo technology The AMD FX Processors come equipped with AMD Turbo CORE Technology, a performance boosting technology that helps increase performance on the applications that need it the most.
  • newegg Amazing instruction capabilities Like Bulldozer, Piledriver has some amazing instruction capabilities. Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) increase parallelism tailored for scientific and 3D applications that use heavy floating point calculations. Floating Point Vector Multiply-Accumulate improves throughput and performance on many vector functions (integer and floating point). Advanced Encryption Standard noticeably increases performance on the latest encryption applications like TrueCrypt and benchmarks like PCMark.
  • newegg AMD Hypertransport technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link which helps reduce the number of buses in a system thus reducing system bottlenecks and enabling today's faster microprocessors to use system memory more efficiently in high-end multiprocessor systems.
  • newegg Integrated DRAM Controller with AMD Memory Optimizer Technology AMD FX Vishera Processor features a high-bandwidth, low-latency integrated memory controller that supports faster and low voltage memories and provides new Pre-Fetcher improvements and direct communications to each core in Dual-Core module (APIC registers in each core).

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great With JULinux

Pros: Very Fast, Great For Multitasking, Supplements bad video cards well. Runs cool with the cooler master even in 90 degree F heat. Great upgrade for any compatible motherboard.

Cons: Haven't found any yet.

Other Thoughts: I'm stuck with a 64 bit video card, and this 8 core CPU more than makes up for it. I don't overclock it, because overclocking is a bad idea.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome cpu

Pros: FAST. Amazing cpu, amazing price, totally recommended.

Cons: Heat sink latch is tiny, not possible to secure it onto my GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD5 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard. The pre-applied thermal paste is like superglue so this made it easier to do an improvised latch.

When I connected one arm of the latch, the other side would not reach down far enough to even grab the clip arm. If you do manage to barely get this attacked somehow, do NOT try and close the latch or it will just break or just crack your motherboard.

Only -1 egg because the cpu is godly, but it seems like the heat sink wasn't even tested.

5 out of 5 eggsIncredible Performance

Pros: Very, very fast for the value. Zero lag when coupled with any ssd.

Cons: You will need to purchase a better cooling system.

Other Thoughts: Go with the Asus Sabertooth MoBo well worth it.

5 out of 5 eggsheat sink

Pros: the amd 8350 is really good

Cons: the heat sink is really tight in the motherboards I've tried. I ended up breaking the lever to tighten the heatsink down. but it was on so tight already, it was no problem running the cpu for long periods of time. Risked it there, but it's working just fine.

Other Thoughts: they could've made the heat sink a lot better! For installation wise.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for me

Pros: 8 cores
Not an Intel (no, I'm not a fanboy, I just hate Intel's cost/value skew)
Faster than I need and I haven't touched OCing it yet.

Cons: It wasn't free

Other Thoughts: The cooler that comes with it is just fine for stock settings, despite what I read. I am applying a CM Hyper 212 Evo when my thermal compound gets here, but I'm only hitting around 52 celsius under moderately heavy load at stock. Just saying, it'll do, if your budget can't handle your crazy cooler fixation quite yet.

My Build:

AMD FX-8350 Vishera 4.0GHz (4.2GHz Turbo)
ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX/GEN3 R2.0
2 x EVGA GeForce GTX 670 FTW+ 4GB
G.SKILL Sniper Series 32GB DDR3 1866
PC Power & Cooling Silencer Mk III Series 1200W Modular Power Supply
COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 EVO
Rosewill THOR V2-White Edition
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Fedora/Ubuntu Live Sessions when I feel like it ;)
2 x ASUS VE247H 23.6" LED

Future adds:
SSD
Maybe watercooling if/when I get bored and decide to OC

5 out of 5 eggsFast and affordable

Pros: fast, eight cores

Cons: none really except you NEED adequate cooling. See below

Other Thoughts: I was in the "I don't overclock so the stock fan will be fine" camp for over ten years. Until BF3. Maybe it's all the physics that come with destructible environments. I couldn't run my Phenom X4 970 with all details maxed out. Game would crash. I then bought a Zalman cooler and pulled out my ten year old Chieftec case. This CPU is basically the same in terms of heat. Cute little cases with handles and "silent" cases are all the rage. You've been warned. They won't work with this chip. You're living on borrowed time. You'll be playing Crysis 3 and BSOD and blame drivers or something. Good big case with no airflow obstructions, lots of fans, aftermarket cooler then you're good to go.
