New microarchitecture, new level of performance

Piledriver microarchitecture, a tuned-up Bulldozer, has finally reached the flagship AMD FX processors (the new FX series processors are codenamed as Vishera) for improved performance and better energy-efficiency. Up to eight “Piledriver” cores ensure unrivaled multitasking and pure core performance. The AMD Turbo Core technology pushes your core frequencies to the most when you need it most. To top it off, like all other AMD’s Black Edition processors, the new AMD FX 8-core Vishera processor black edition is unlocked for fabulous overclocking* capability.  Unrivaled performance is not the only trick AMD has up their sleeve. Vishera processors are at a reasonable price point. (*AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.)

  • newegg New Piledriver microarchitecture Piledriver microarchitecture is the second generation of AMD Bulldozer microarchitecture. The internal core structure has been modified for higher frequencies even without any changes in the manufacturing process. Piledriver has a more precise branch predictor and a larger instruction window with ISA extensions FMA3 and F16C. The execution units acquired an enhanced scheduler and learned to process individual instructions faster, such as integer and floating-point division. And Piledriver microarchitecture delivers higher power efficiency compared with Bulldozer microarchitecture.
  • newegg Unlocked AMD FX processor with 8 Piledriver cores The native 8-core desktop processor delivers unrivaled multitasking and pure core performance with the new Piledriver microarchitecture. 32 nanometer die shrink was designed to reduce leakage for improved efficiency, increased clock rate headroom and better thermals. The AMD unlocked technology offers more headroom for your overclocking (AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.).
  • newegg AMD Turbo technology The AMD FX Processors come equipped with AMD Turbo CORE Technology, a performance boosting technology that helps increase performance on the applications that need it the most.
  • newegg Amazing instruction capabilities Like Bulldozer, Piledriver has some amazing instruction capabilities. Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) increase parallelism tailored for scientific and 3D applications that use heavy floating point calculations. Floating Point Vector Multiply-Accumulate improves throughput and performance on many vector functions (integer and floating point). Advanced Encryption Standard noticeably increases performance on the latest encryption applications like TrueCrypt and benchmarks like PCMark.
  • newegg AMD Hypertransport technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link which helps reduce the number of buses in a system thus reducing system bottlenecks and enabling today's faster microprocessors to use system memory more efficiently in high-end multiprocessor systems.
  • newegg Integrated DRAM Controller with AMD Memory Optimizer Technology AMD FX Vishera Processor features a high-bandwidth, low-latency integrated memory controller that supports faster and low voltage memories and provides new Pre-Fetcher improvements and direct communications to each core in Dual-Core module (APIC registers in each core).

4 out of 5 eggsGreat performance at a much lower price point.

Pros: Cheaper than an Intel solution.
Awesome gaming performance at a much lower price point.

Cons: Stock tiny fan gets loud as it tries its best to cool the heat sink.
Runs a bit warm under load, 50~60 degree Celsius.

Other Thoughts: Spend the extra cash and get an aftermarket cooler.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Value for Your Money

Pros: Very good processor. It handles multiple tasks with ease. Games run flawlessly on it. After much study about reviews, prices, etc... This one gets you the most for cheapest. An Intel i7 would be a bit better, but this is also $400 less.

Cons: Box it came in was dirty.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my first PC build and everything is running great.

5 out of 5 eggsAMD FX-8320

Pros: This processor is quite amazing and I bought it for my brothers gaming PC build. While 8 cores seems overkill for a gaming PC you can't beat the price. Purchase 9/30/2014 for $139.99.

Cons: The only con for this CPU is the stock cooler. While the cooler does technically work and keeps the temp low enough at max load it is just way too loud. Expect to get a new one if you don't want your ears to bleed. I ended up getting the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO.

5 out of 5 eggsSorry Intel

Pros: Bought this for a gaming and video editing build that I put together about 4 months ago. 8 cores might seem high for gaming but when you're rendering video in 1080p at 60 FPS in maximum depth, you'll be happy you bought this CPU. I've never hit over 70% usage and always run at 30 Celsius with an aftermarket cooler. (I have 8 case fans running negative pressure) I could probably get even cooler but I may have over-applied my thermal paste.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: It's not that I have anything against Intel, but AMD made me a huge fan with their prices and unlocked CPUs. Maybe if I had $500+ to blow on a processor I would change my mind. But I've run both on different systems and stand by my purchase. I plan on overclocking but I'm going to watercool my system first.

5 out of 5 eggsFast as all get out

Pros: This is a fast processor. I had a hard time deciding between the i5 and this chip. If I had based my decision on what people say on gaming forums and the like, I would have gone with an i5. I'm glad I didn't.

This chip is lightning fast. For reference, I do a little bit of everything, but I especially play games, surf the web, and create multimedia assets.

I have an i5 in my work laptop and granted it's the mobile chip and all and a little slower clock (3.2) than this... but it does NOT outperform AMD 8320 doing the same tasks (minus the gaming; I can't play games on the work laptop). The 8320 is at least 5x faster than the laptop's i5. At least. I don't benchmark or I'd tell you for sure. I do know that I get lag with the i5 when I have more than 5 tabs of a browser open in conjunction with 1-3 MS or Adobe products open, while I had at least 26 tabs open, Everquest running, and Adobe going on the 8320 rig without a performance issue.

The chip isn't overly hot either, but then I have a Corsair H80i cooling it so I can't really tell you what it might be running at with the stock cooler.

No issues with this chip. No bent pins. Great packaging. Worked immediately in the mobo.

Bought this to play EQ Next/Landmark. Seems over capable.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: ASUS M5A97 R2.0 with AMD-FX 8320 Vishera, 8GB GSkill Ares 2133, Corsair H80i, 128GB SanDisk SSD, 240 GB Seagate Barracuda, MSI 9800 GTX (upgraded today and waiting for MSI GTX 760 4GB!), and Windows 8.1. Powered by Antec HCG-750M (with BitFenix Alchemy extension cables) in Thermaltake Chaser A31.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for gaming and streaming

Pros: -Good price (cheaper than FX-8350 and intel rivals)
-Great for gaming and streaming/recording, with its 8 flippin' cores
-Overclocks beyond the speeds of the 8350 (mine is at 4.5ghz)
-

Cons: -The 32nm architecture isn't exactly efficient...still gets the job done.
-My energy bill will cause my divorce one day after buying this

Other Thoughts: Core for core, this processor doesn't match up with an intel counterpart. That said, this baby has 8 friggen' cores.

4 out of 5 eggsSomewhat dissapointed

Pros: 8 cores but with some shared resources.

Cons: Runs hot. Got aftermarket CPU cooler, but it was defective. Installed stock cooler, and the CPU idles around 35 degrees, but shoots right up to 50 with modest load. Running Passmark tests it hit 65, which is a bit scarey since some of the reviewers say AMD recommends a max of 62 C. Could not find direct max temp info on AMD website. Definitely getting a better CPU Cooler.

Passmark scores significantly lower than my 3770K i7 (4 physical cores with hyper-threading for 8 logical cores) in most CPU areas, though possibly somewhat due to thermal throttling.

AMD architecture has a separate North Bridge, which greatly increases the latency of I/O operations. My Passmark memory test were significantly slower with DDR3 2133 memory on this build vs DDR3 1600 on my i7 Intel board.

Other Thoughts: Cheap, but at a price. Performance suffers, and you burn enough extra electricity to potentially make up the difference in price for an Intel over the life of the computer. Built for a friend who does Graphic Design work and didn't want to wait 10 seconds between each button push when working on CAD program. She requested an AMD CPU, I have not used their CPU's in years, but I figured an 8 core would handle her needs just fine. However, now that I have it running, I am somewhat disappointed. AMD still has some catching up to do.

Pros: Good speed for the price.

Cons: Stock heatsink latching mech is confusing and fragile (and I've worked with many a heat sink). AMD, stop trying to save 3 cent and make it better.

5 out of 5 eggsamazing

Pros: this cpu is great. its 8 cores for 150. and since it is half the price of the intel cpunterpart you should have enough money left over to get a quite nice tower or AIO liquid cooler

Cons: SO HOT. definately need an AIO or a noctua or any other hugh end tower heatsync to OC this chip. also recommend a hugh airflow case period, even if using an AIO.

5 out of 5 eggsI love this processor

Pros: This thing does everything I could ever ask of it. I love that I can overclock it and that it has 8 cores. I have mine currently over clocked to 4.6ghz while keeping it cool with a corsair h80i.

Cons: not as fast as an intel haswell i7? then again it was half the price.

4 out of 5 eggsAlmost cheap enough to consider

Pros: The prices on these chips keep dropping. They actually have pretty decent performance. If these every get down to the $99 price point then they will sell fast. Almost as fast as a Intel core i5 in some applications and much cheaper. AMD needs to drop the price to under $100 and then they have a winner on their hands.

Cons: Well obviously AMD is way behind Intel in the performance per watt category. These chips run hot and almost certainly demand water cooling. Also they use a lot more power than equivalent Intel chips. And of course they do not run games as fast as Intel, but if the price comes down to less than a core i3 chip then they would make a great budget build.

Other Thoughts: If you are on a super tight budget you really can't go wrong with these 8 core CPU's.

3 out of 5 eggsGood.

Pros: -Great overclocker. Got it to 4.4GHz easy.
-Is capable. For $150 you get solid gaming performance and fantastic rendering/video editing/multitasking performance. Great for streamers or content creators.
-Stock heatsink is beefy, if the fan wasnt so useless, it would be a good cooler.

Cons: -Is hot. Get a nice air cooler or an AIO. Running it with an H100i and I see temps that reach 55-58C (under a heavy overclock). The max for this CPU is around 60C. Stock speeds will obviously yield cooler temps but I would definitely not skimp on a cooler for this one.
-Based on what we've been hearing, this AM3 and AM3+ socket is dying out in favor of FM2 and FM2+. If you want to upgrade to whatever AMD has in store you'll probably need a new motherboard too. Futureproofing shouldnt be your object when buying this anyways, it is not exactly brand new.
-Single core performance is pretty laughable. Compared to the athlon 750k, it is not much better in that aspect. If you're looking for single core performance go intel.

Other Thoughts: Good processor for a budget-minded build. Also a good overclocker, and decent gamer. Wouldn't recommend anything else for a $150 budget.

4 out of 5 eggsIt gets the job done...

Pros: This is a pretty good processor if you can't afford a serious Intel.
I've experienced negligible lag when doing just about anything that requires CPU power, and I haven't even OC'd it. It soars.

Cons: The heat... it's horrible. I have to take half-hour breaks after about 3 hours of gaming so my PC won't have a meltdown. I've heard that AMD is notorious for their heat, but this is something else...

Other Thoughts: If you need something for this performance range and money is tight, I say save the $300+ for the Intel equivalent and get this thing.
However.... if you can afford $400-$1000 for a high-caliber CPU... go with Intel. You air conditioning bill will thank you, because it will generate FAR less heat.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid performer

Pros: One of the best price:performance ratios available today. Runs at perfectly manageable temperatures with a closed-loop water cooler.

Cons: I did not use the stock fan, but it does not look substantial enough to properly cool this processor. Does not effect score since I didn't actually test it.

Other Thoughts: I have this processor in my media and video transcoding server. I upgraded from an i5-661 and I was expecting a modest increase in transcoding performance, but I was blown away when I measured a 293% increase. This is certainly due to my software being integer heavy and supports over 8 simultaneous threads, so don't expect this kind of performance in every scenario. However, I doubt I could have found a higher value purchase for my server.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice CPU!

Pros: No installation issues.

I am using the "stock" fan that the CPU came with. The system is not going to be overclocked, and I also added two additional fans to the top of the case, so I won't have any heating issues. The systems been on for about 30 hours now, and the system temp is in the normal range.

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: For the first 48 hours, I'm going to have an MPEG set as the desktop just to keep it busy.

5 out of 5 eggsGood CPU, Fair heatsink fan

Pros: + Excellent price-performance ratio
+ Wonderful performance on multi-threaded tasks
+ Stock heatsink is equipped with heat pipes and is made by Cooler Master.

Cons: - Stock heatsink is equipped with a super thin, 80mm fan. Under low loads it's fine but when being pushed it gets loud, not unlike an optical drive spooling up to max speed and staying there. If I didn't know better, I might assume that's just how these things are. However I do know better, and I know this thing is LOUD under load.

Other Thoughts: Windows 7 Experience Index score: 7.7

Cinebench v11.5 CPU score: 6.01

Compare that to scores from:
Athlon II X2 of 1.77
Athlon II X3 of 2.54
Intel i7 960 of 5.7
Intel i7 3930K of 10.29

5 out of 5 eggsPerformance on a budget

Pros: + Cheap 8-core CPU for $150 (at the time I bought it on sale)
+ Overclocks like a champ
+ Nearly comparable to an i5 in gaming performance for less.

Cons: - Hot
- Power hungry
- Stock fan that comes with it is horrible. Small and sounds like a jet taking off with 6000 RPM and doesn't keep it very cool.
- Need to 'unpark' cores in Windows 7 for most performance

Other Thoughts: This is a very good CPU for the price, probably the best price/performance above $100. It is good if you want to use it for a virtual machine as, unlike unlocked Intel processors, you get features for shared access to hardware. However, I cannot recommend this enough: get a separate heatsink. The stock one is embarrassingly loud and horrible at cooling. I'd recommend CM's Hyper 212 EVO (what I use) or Corsair's H50i liquid cooler.

Overall, if you want a good processor now for the price, get this. Otherwise, I would wait for the next high performance FX or A series from AMD, whenever that may be released.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far, So good!

Pros: So far, I've seen remarkably fast speeds. I just built a new computer using this 8 Core FX Processor as it's CPU, and so far I can say I'm not let down.

I know what you're thinking, how can I even tell if all these reviews are real? Trust me, I am as real as they get! haha.

Cons: 8 Core needs better cooling, so don't use stock cooler, upgrade like I plan on doing.

Other Thoughts: My other thoughts would be... Have fun if you get this? hah.

Pros: Fantastic value, great performance for the money

Cons: ran a little hot on start-up when I had the stock cooler installed.

Other Thoughts: Temperature not really an issue, I planned on upgrading the cooler to a Cooler Master 212 EVO anyways, I just had the stock one on for a quick install to see if my system would boot into BIOS. successful on that so I will continue from there. Great little chip.

Pros: strong CPU no matter what your computer is designed for. included fan/radiator block is sufficient at stock settings, when installed properly. includes pre-applied heat transfer paste.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsLove this processor

Pros: if i could give it 6 stars i would. I went from an intel chip to this AMD chip and for the money there is no comparison. The 8320 has been fast and flawless. At this point i dont see going back to intel any time soon. The processor is also easily overclocked as well. This is a function that is not available in intel at this price point. It is my understanding that you can take this thing to 4.2 G to 4.5 G without issue.

Cons: It runs hot as all AMD's do. Cooler Master EVO 212 takes car of this issue for just over 30 bucks so this con isnt really a con at all considering to get the same performance from an intel your going to pay about $100.00 more.

5 out of 5 eggs  works...IT WORKS

Pros: It's cool, the fan is quiet, all 8 cores are running at expected frequency. Don't try to overclock without an aftermarket cooler, I get stable enough temps and don't need to push it unless I can cool it. GET IT.

Cons: None so far.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU

Pros: -Runs my system very well
-Very fast all its own, the price is a bonus
-Combined with my SSD my system starts up in under 12 seconds
-Overclocks to stable 4.2GHz with Hyper EVO 212

Cons: -None so far

Other Thoughts: -Not the CPU itself, but the stock fan is small and very whinny. I replaced it with the Hyper EVO 212

5 out of 5 eggsFlawless Performance

Pros: Runs perfectly, Low temperatures, Stock cooler runs (surprisingly) well, Octo-core, Easy overclock, Relatively cheap

Cons: Absolutely none.

Other Thoughts: I bought this CPU during a Black Friday sale last year, and I can say nothing but compliments about it. At the time, it was $120, just a mere $10-$20 more than much lower-end products. However, I would still buy it today at it's current price, as it completely overshoots my expectations of any product at that price.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat performance

Pros: Lots of cores, great price/performance, easy to overclock. I've bought a couple of these for various builds.

Cons: Didn't win the overclocking lottery on the last one I bought. Not bad, just relatively high voltage required for a moderate 4.2GHz overclock.

5 out of 5 eggsA solid experience

Pros: - Great temps under low load (no higher 42 degrees Celsius watching videos)
- Provides great computing power, enough for intense gaming, video editing, and of course everyday tasks.
- Unlocked multiplier provides simple overclocking out of the box, sometimes as easy as loading a driver from your motherboard manufacturer and raising it. The stock cooler is decent but won't allow for much overclocking.
- Handles 3D rendering, gaming and other full loads without reaching over 65 degrees Celsius using a stock cooler and aftermarket paste.

Cons: - Pins can be easily bent, be careful.
- Stock cooling fan could be a little more large and quiet.

Other Thoughts: I am very happy with this processor, and paired with a Radeon R9 or even R7 Series graphics card, an SSD, and 8GB's+ of 1866mhz Ram provides an enjoyable experience and a more than acceptable grade of performance.

5 out of 5 eggsGood processor

Pros: I am an Intel Fanboy.....but this is a great processor. Speed and reliable - easy setup - and the comparable Intel processors are $70-$150 more in price. This isn't my first AMD product, but it is the most impressive.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: AMD makes great "mid-range" processors - I will no longer be utilizing the core i-3 products - AMD has won me over....

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price!

Pros: 8 Cores
3.5GHz stock
Easy to overclock

I was able to get 4.1GHz (and probably a little higher) with the stock cooler without passing 50C (according to Core Temp). I find this chip very easy to overclock, and I am running 4.1GHz a little lower than the stock voltage, so I'm really enjoying this chip. Part of what makes me love this chip is I'm upgrading from an Intel Pentium 2160 which is a dual core 1.8GHz chip. I have this paired with an EVGA SC GTX 760 and I can play pretty much any game at Ultra/Near Ultra settings. I would highly recommend this chip. I also got it for only $130 at my local store, so look around! An amazing bargain.

Cons: Wasn't free. Wait why am I complaining I got it for $130!
Glad I got RAM with heat spreaders. The heatsink fins blow hot air onto the closest RAM chip.

Other Thoughts: If you're stuck between the 8350 and the 8320, go with the 8320. All you have to do is go into the bios and bump the multiplier up and you got a free upgrade from an 8320 to the 8350. They're pretty much the same chip they just have different clock speeds.

5 out of 5 eggsFx octobeast

Pros: 8 cores (see other thoughts for a fun rant about this lol).
Multi tasks like a champ
This cpu is like a v8 turbo diesel truck engine (powerstroke ftw). It is not the fastest out there but it can handle any load that your standard gamer or home 3d or video renderer will do with plenty of room to spare.
the 8320 and its "bigger" brother the 8350 are the best overall bang for your buck in raw cpu power. If you are a comfortable with over clocking go with the 8320, but if not go with the 8350. They are identical in all areas aside from the clock speeds they come with out of the box. Not that you really need it to be any faster than it is out of the box in my opinion. Runs all my games like butter at max settings at perfectly playable to obscenely high fps paired with my r9 270x which is overclocked to 1100mhz. I have worked with the fx 6300 (which I put in my brother's build) and the 8350 which is in one of my friends builds. All of them are very solid cpus.
The 8350 out of the box scored a slightly lower than a stock i7 3770 for a good chunk less! (do the math I would tell you how much it is but I dont want that to scratch my review as it would be including "prices/avaialblilty"
Cinebench revision 15
i7 3770 score: 662 this score was provided to me by the sofware itself I didnt get to test this one, all the other ones I tested 5 times and took an average of them.
8350@4ghz: 636
8320@3.5ghz: 556
Comparison to i5 series: 489 (3570 specifically which is VERY similar to the 4670 in performance aside from the new Haswell power saving features etc): which is priced comparably to the 8350 when it is not on sale.

Cons: 32nm tech. This is getting very outdated I hope amd will release a new fx line based on their 28 nm tech that is being used in their new apu line. Intel is at 22nm currently and plans to be at 14 by december 2014!
For those of you who dont quite know what this means, an intel cpu at 22nm clocked at say 3.5 ghz is comparable to an amd 32nm cpu clocked at 4 ghz. This means a bit more power usage and heat.
If you are gaming this is really irrelevant because there is no real gain in investing in faster ram speeds than 1333mhz (SPECIFIC TO DISCRETE GRAPHICS CARD USERS), but this line of cpus is not going to be able to handle some of the redonculous ram speeds some of the intel cpus will be able handle.
The stock heatsink provided will work, but I wouldn't use it. Idle with the stock heatsink is between 35-40 and that was enough for me to get an aftermarket cooler. I didn't want to see its max temps under load. Bought myself a cm hyper t4 brought my idle temps to 25-30 degrees C. Just factor some kind of aftermarket cooling into this if you want to fully push this thing without being worried about shortening its life span.
Lastly this will "limit you" to pci 2.0 slots for expansion, not that it really matters ( the story may be different if you plan to do 4k but that is not in my area of expertiese. 1080p is plenty for me. also if you plan to do 4k I would guess your budget allows for a bit fancier cpu and you arent hunting for the best performance per dollar, as much as you are hunting for sheer performance.

Other Thoughts: Ignore anyone who says it is only 4 core with 8 threads they only looked at what windows task manager showed them. There are in fact 8 cpu core modules, they just share cache memory per 2 cores which makes it read as 1core with 2 threads x4. They do this because it makes the cpus run more effieciently then the preivious version of this line the fx X1X0 such as 8150 or 6100 otherwise known as bulldozer.
Maxed out settings (aside from anti aliasing and games that require 3gb of vram) on:
Assasins creed 4
Tomb Raider- Benchmark provided with the game gave me 40 fps on average with vertical sync on. (60hz 1080p tv)
Crysis 3-
BattleField 4 and 3-
TitanFall
Watch dogs-
World of tanks
Sniper Elite 2 and 3
Starcraft 2 (this was the only game the 8320 “struggled with” at stock settings because sc2 only utilizes 2 cores)
League- max fps of 360 so far ahah
Another thing start discounting the idea that games only use 4 cores. That is changing rapidly and I expect it to become more and more common for games to recomend 8 threads. Xbox 1 and ps4 both have 8 core cpus. Watch dogs in my opinon just needs 6 cores minimum on the amd side. Games that I know of at the time of writing this review that can use 8 threads or more recieved a hyphen (-) aside from league in my list of games maxed.
Hope this reivew helps out alot of people!
My personal build:
Fx 8320
xfx r9 270x 2gb black edition (may upgrade this to a r9 280 or 290 sometime in the future to aquire more vram)
xfx 650Watt psu pro series
gskill ares 1600mhz
gigabtye 990fx motherboard
1 tb wd blue 7200
256gb samsung evo ssd
Rosewill Challenger usb 2.0 version case
Cooler master hyper t4 cpu cooler
Windows 8.1 home premium- I would highly recommend 8.1 btw it boots faster, is a bit more effiecient esp in its usage of multiple cpu cores, although you can fix this in 7 I hear with a patch that is not automatically found in windows update. I may be wrong about that bit however. the info I am using for 7vs 8 in core usage is a bit older from another reiview on newegg and a youtube video that was released before 8.1 was a thing and it was just windows 8.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU

Pros: > Price, AMD CPU's are great value.
> Overclocks very easily in my Asus M5A99X EVO.

Currently running at 4.2 GHz @ stock voltage :)
I could definitely push it farther. Currently mounted with a ZALMAN CNPS9500A-LED 92mm Cooler.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: If you are considering the FX-8350 buy the 8320 instead and just overclock it.

Temperatures with my cooler are fine, I don't hit above 55 Celsius while gaming.
