New microarchitecture, new level of performance

Piledriver microarchitecture, a tuned-up Bulldozer, has finally reached the flagship AMD FX processors (the new FX series processors are codenamed as Vishera) for improved performance and better energy-efficiency. Up to eight “Piledriver” cores ensure unrivaled multitasking and pure core performance. The AMD Turbo Core technology pushes your core frequencies to the most when you need it most. To top it off, like all other AMD’s Black Edition processors, the new AMD FX 8-core Vishera processor black edition is unlocked for fabulous overclocking* capability.  Unrivaled performance is not the only trick AMD has up their sleeve. Vishera processors are at a reasonable price point. (*AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.)

  • newegg New Piledriver microarchitecture Piledriver microarchitecture is the second generation of AMD Bulldozer microarchitecture. The internal core structure has been modified for higher frequencies even without any changes in the manufacturing process. Piledriver has a more precise branch predictor and a larger instruction window with ISA extensions FMA3 and F16C. The execution units acquired an enhanced scheduler and learned to process individual instructions faster, such as integer and floating-point division. And Piledriver microarchitecture delivers higher power efficiency compared with Bulldozer microarchitecture.
  • newegg Unlocked AMD FX processor with 8 Piledriver cores The native 8-core desktop processor delivers unrivaled multitasking and pure core performance with the new Piledriver microarchitecture. 32 nanometer die shrink was designed to reduce leakage for improved efficiency, increased clock rate headroom and better thermals. The AMD unlocked technology offers more headroom for your overclocking (AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.).
  • newegg AMD Turbo technology The AMD FX Processors come equipped with AMD Turbo CORE Technology, a performance boosting technology that helps increase performance on the applications that need it the most.
  • newegg Amazing instruction capabilities Like Bulldozer, Piledriver has some amazing instruction capabilities. Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) increase parallelism tailored for scientific and 3D applications that use heavy floating point calculations. Floating Point Vector Multiply-Accumulate improves throughput and performance on many vector functions (integer and floating point). Advanced Encryption Standard noticeably increases performance on the latest encryption applications like TrueCrypt and benchmarks like PCMark.
  • newegg AMD Hypertransport technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link which helps reduce the number of buses in a system thus reducing system bottlenecks and enabling today's faster microprocessors to use system memory more efficiently in high-end multiprocessor systems.
  • newegg Integrated DRAM Controller with AMD Memory Optimizer Technology AMD FX Vishera Processor features a high-bandwidth, low-latency integrated memory controller that supports faster and low voltage memories and provides new Pre-Fetcher improvements and direct communications to each core in Dual-Core module (APIC registers in each core).

5 out of 5 eggsI love this processor

Pros: This thing does everything I could ever ask of it. I love that I can overclock it and that it has 8 cores. I have mine currently over clocked to 4.6ghz while keeping it cool with a corsair h80i.

Cons: not as fast as an intel haswell i7? then again it was half the price.

4 out of 5 eggsAlmost cheap enough to consider

Pros: The prices on these chips keep dropping. They actually have pretty decent performance. If these every get down to the $99 price point then they will sell fast. Almost as fast as a Intel core i5 in some applications and much cheaper. AMD needs to drop the price to under $100 and then they have a winner on their hands.

Cons: Well obviously AMD is way behind Intel in the performance per watt category. These chips run hot and almost certainly demand water cooling. Also they use a lot more power than equivalent Intel chips. And of course they do not run games as fast as Intel, but if the price comes down to less than a core i3 chip then they would make a great budget build.

Other Thoughts: If you are on a super tight budget you really can't go wrong with these 8 core CPU's.

3 out of 5 eggsGood.

Pros: -Great overclocker. Got it to 4.4GHz easy.
-Is capable. For $150 you get solid gaming performance and fantastic rendering/video editing/multitasking performance. Great for streamers or content creators.
-Stock heatsink is beefy, if the fan wasnt so useless, it would be a good cooler.

Cons: -Is hot. Get a nice air cooler or an AIO. Running it with an H100i and I see temps that reach 55-58C (under a heavy overclock). The max for this CPU is around 60C. Stock speeds will obviously yield cooler temps but I would definitely not skimp on a cooler for this one.
-Based on what we've been hearing, this AM3 and AM3+ socket is dying out in favor of FM2 and FM2+. If you want to upgrade to whatever AMD has in store you'll probably need a new motherboard too. Futureproofing shouldnt be your object when buying this anyways, it is not exactly brand new.
-Single core performance is pretty laughable. Compared to the athlon 750k, it is not much better in that aspect. If you're looking for single core performance go intel.

Other Thoughts: Good processor for a budget-minded build. Also a good overclocker, and decent gamer. Wouldn't recommend anything else for a $150 budget.

4 out of 5 eggsIt gets the job done...

Pros: This is a pretty good processor if you can't afford a serious Intel.
I've experienced negligible lag when doing just about anything that requires CPU power, and I haven't even OC'd it. It soars.

Cons: The heat... it's horrible. I have to take half-hour breaks after about 3 hours of gaming so my PC won't have a meltdown. I've heard that AMD is notorious for their heat, but this is something else...

Other Thoughts: If you need something for this performance range and money is tight, I say save the $300+ for the Intel equivalent and get this thing.
However.... if you can afford $400-$1000 for a high-caliber CPU... go with Intel. You air conditioning bill will thank you, because it will generate FAR less heat.

Pros: this thing is a beast! coming from my phenom 955 black 2 core to this is just awesome. glad i got this and set up in a new rig was easy. 8 cores is very nice. no probs with pcmark or 3d mark on high settings.

Cons: not free.

Other Thoughts: i would and have told my friends to upgrade to this if there at 4 cores or less.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful And Hot

Pros: This is a great performance chip at a great price. Able to handle anything you can throw at it. Gamers delight. Highly recommended.

Cons: This thing is HOT! Will cook bacon in you case if you don't use a performance cooling heatsink or water cooler.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid performer

Pros: One of the best price:performance ratios available today. Runs at perfectly manageable temperatures with a closed-loop water cooler.

Cons: I did not use the stock fan, but it does not look substantial enough to properly cool this processor. Does not effect score since I didn't actually test it.

Other Thoughts: I have this processor in my media and video transcoding server. I upgraded from an i5-661 and I was expecting a modest increase in transcoding performance, but I was blown away when I measured a 293% increase. This is certainly due to my software being integer heavy and supports over 8 simultaneous threads, so don't expect this kind of performance in every scenario. However, I doubt I could have found a higher value purchase for my server.
