New microarchitecture, new level of performance

Piledriver microarchitecture, a tuned-up Bulldozer, has finally reached the flagship AMD FX processors (the new FX series processors are codenamed as Vishera) for improved performance and better energy-efficiency. Up to six “Piledriver” cores ensure breathtaking 3D modeling and HD video edition as well as maximum multitasking. The AMD Turbo Core technology pushes your core frequencies to the most when you need it most. To top it off, like all other AMD’s Black Edition processors, the new AMD FX 6-core Vishera processor black edition is unlocked for fabulous overclocking* capability.  Superior performance is not the only trick AMD has up their sleeve. Vishera processors are at a reasonable price point. (*AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.)

  • newegg New Piledriver microarchitecture Piledriver microarchitecture is the second generation of AMD Bulldozer microarchitecture. The internal core structure has been modified for higher frequencies even without any changes in the manufacturing process. Piledriver has a more precise branch predictor and a larger instruction window with ISA extensions FMA3 and F16C. The execution units acquired an enhanced scheduler and learned to process individual instructions faster, such as integer and floating-point division. And Piledriver microarchitecture delivers higher power efficiency compared with Bulldozer microarchitecture.
  • newegg Unlocked AMD FX processor with 6 Piledriver cores The native 6-core desktop processor ensures breathtaking 3D modeling and HD video edition as well as maximum multitasking with the new Piledriver microarchitecture. 32 nanometer die shrink was designed to reduce leakage for improved efficiency, increased clock rate headroom and better thermals. The AMD unlocked technology offers more headroom for your overclocking (AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.).
  • newegg AMD Turbo technology The AMD FX Processors come equipped with AMD Turbo CORE Technology, a performance boosting technology that helps increase performance on the applications that need it the most.
  • newegg Amazing instruction capabilities Like Bulldozer, Piledriver has some amazing instruction capabilities. Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) increase parallelism tailored for scientific and 3D applications that use heavy floating point calculations. Floating Point Vector Multiply-Accumulate improves throughput and performance on many vector functions (integer and floating point). Advanced Encryption Standard noticeably increases performance on the latest encryption applications like TrueCrypt and benchmarks like PCMark.
  • newegg AMD Hypertransport technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link which helps reduce the number of buses in a system thus reducing system bottlenecks and enabling today's faster microprocessors to use system memory more efficiently in high-end multiprocessor systems.
  • newegg Integrated DRAM Controller with AMD Memory Optimizer Technology AMD FX Vishera Processor features a high-bandwidth, low-latency integrated memory controller that supports faster and low voltage memories and provides new Pre-Fetcher improvements and direct communications to each core in Dual-Core module (APIC registers in each core).

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Great processor, highly recommend it. Got it on sale for $106+shipping. OCed to 4GHz, with off market air cooler. Runs cool and is fast. Bought this to upgrade from AMD Phenom X4 965BE. Runs about the same on single threaded apps, but new instruction sets and extra core make other apps faster. Dual booting, works well with Debian linux.

Cons: No cons.

5 out of 5 eggsGood for the money

Pros: Good performance for the money! not even mention you can O.C. it easily! I overclocked it to 4.2/4.3, it works perfectly! Strongly recommended. But if you have extra money, go for FX- 8XXX.

Cons: Feels like it bottlenecks my r9 280 while play World of Tanks, but after some research, that's because WOT is a single core game. After O.C. I can get around 50 fps at highest graphical settings No complains.

Other Thoughts: Hope AMD give us more products! World would be terrible if there is only Intel!

5 out of 5 eggsNo complaints

Pros: Lots of power
Great power/$ ratio

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my wife's computer. Primary use is gaming, with some photoshop use as well as standard web browsing. It has work fantastic, and has plenty of power to spare.

4 out of 5 eggsFast Enough

Pros: Works great and fast enough. I don't have any skipping on my screen, even when running two or three art programs at once. I'd have to say the price is right with this one, Bob.

Cons: The fan came with the paste already on the bottom, which was fine, but you may want to get a tube and apply a dab more to ensure a solid application.

Other Thoughts: I use a pen and tablet to do graphic design and sketching. I had an older processor from AMD that I was using, and I had some skipping and late responses once in a while. I was considering getting the competitor's 8-core, but my buddy pointed this one out to me. The price is right with this one.

5 out of 5 eggsKiller Specs for the Budget Minded

Pros: This chip has some neat tricks. It doesn't run especially hot, it doesn't require tons of power. Supposedly it overclocks well, but I don't use it in that capacity as I don't have a need to take my system to the very edge outside of my graphic work.

I chose this over an Intel i5 (and i7) primarily because of budget reasons, but also because I've been building with AMD for several years now. AMD and Intel have diverged in interesting ways of late-Intel's Hyper Threading being largely considered industry standard with AMD still dabbling with their own versions of same. Near as I've been able to figure, Intel is doing math tricks to make their processors more efficient while AMD is more in the 'more power' category. Math tricks are fantastic when software is coded to take advantage of them, but for every other application, more power is more power. This is more true in my editing software than it is in my games.

Cons: Very dated at this point. I'm not sure I'd trade it out for an APU though.

Other Thoughts: If you want hardcore top end performance, look elsewhere.

However, if you want to be clever, you can save money on this chip, pair it with a mid range PSU, and run a high end energy hog graphics card. 3.5 Ghz over 6 cores is more than enough power for any current game, and it will be even more so when DX12 is the new standard since the new tech allows information to be pushed to ALL cores.

5 out of 5 eggsNon-Overclocker Perspective

Pros: If you are the sort of person that wants to put together a budget build and don't plan to overclock, say you just want to put it all together and game or web browse etc. this processor is very capable. Idle temps around 30c and highest I've seen is 45c under load with stock cooler and of course no overclocking. At idle I haven't seen the cpu usage in task manager go over 5% and in games I have yet to see over 33% usage across all cores. So if you are like me and just like to game without thinking about clock speeds and frequencies, this is plenty for you.

Cons: Didn't come in the tin can like earlier versions? lol

Other Thoughts: For daily use, even mid-high gaming, I would personally bet it will do everything you need it to and useful for the future when games start utilizing more cores.

5 out of 5 eggsCouldn't Find a Better CPU for $100

Pros: Runs fast as advertised. I researched this CPU and felt it the best price per GHZ.

Cons: Runs a little hot sometimes with stock fan (55C). Just ordered another CPU cooler.

Other Thoughts: So much has been said already, I don't think I could contribute anything except I'm pleased.
