New microarchitecture, new level of performance

Piledriver microarchitecture, a tuned-up Bulldozer, has finally reached the flagship AMD FX processors (the new FX series processors are codenamed as Vishera) for improved performance and better energy-efficiency. Four “Piledriver” cores ensure rich, crisp video and seamless multitasking. The AMD Turbo Core technology pushes your core frequencies to the most when you need it most. To top it off, like all other AMD’s Black Edition processors, the new AMD FX 4-core Vishera processor black edition is unlocked for fabulous overclocking* capability. Great performance is not the only trick AMD has up their sleeve. Vishera processors are at a reasonable price point. (*AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.)

  • newegg New Piledriver microarchitecture Piledriver microarchitecture is the second generation of AMD Bulldozer microarchitecture. The internal core structure has been modified for higher frequencies even without any changes in the manufacturing process. Piledriver has a more precise branch predictor and a larger instruction window with ISA extensions FMA3 and F16C. The execution units acquired an enhanced scheduler and learned to process individual instructions faster, such as integer and floating-point division. And Piledriver microarchitecture delivers higher power efficiency compared with Bulldozer microarchitecture.
  • newegg Unlocked AMD FX processor with 4 Piledriver cores The native 4-core desktop processor ensures rich, crisp video and seamless multitasking. new Piledriver microarchitecture. 32 nanometer die shrink was designed to reduce leakage for improved efficiency, increased clock rate headroom and better thermals. The AMD unlocked technology offers more headroom for your overclocking (AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.).
  • newegg AMD Turbo technology The AMD FX Processors come equipped with AMD Turbo CORE Technology, a performance boosting technology that helps increase performance on the applications that need it the most.
  • newegg Amazing instruction capabilities Like Bulldozer, Piledriver has some amazing instruction capabilities. Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) increase parallelism tailored for scientific and 3D applications that use heavy floating point calculations. Floating Point Vector Multiply-Accumulate improves throughput and performance on many vector functions (integer and floating point). Advanced Encryption Standard noticeably increases performance on the latest encryption applications like TrueCrypt and benchmarks like PCMark.
  • newegg AMD Hypertransport technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link which helps reduce the number of buses in a system thus reducing system bottlenecks and enabling today's faster microprocessors to use system memory more efficiently in high-end multiprocessor systems.
  • newegg Integrated DRAM Controller with AMD Memory Optimizer Technology AMD FX Vishera Processor features a high-bandwidth, low-latency integrated memory controller that supports faster and low voltage memories and provides new Pre-Fetcher improvements and direct communications to each core in Dual-Core module (APIC registers in each core).

5 out of 5 eggsDIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

Pros: Inexpensive
Fast for general usage tasks, I have it paired with a SSD and can't really tell a difference from my Core i7 3770 rig even with light multitasking like playing a YT video, a dozen browser tabs open, retro game emulation... etc. still snappy snappy snappy
Runs cool and silent under the CM Hyper 212 EVO Heatsink

Cons: Ostracized by Intel fanboys
STOCK HEATSINK SUCKS
It's no Core i7 for sure.. it will gasp for air while the i7 keeps on running under very heavy loads

Other Thoughts: Would I recommend this product? Well... perhaps for someone who doesn't need a ton of raw number crunching horsepower. Generally, you can get an AMD motherboard with a lot more SATA/USB/etc at the same price point as an Intel board. But, this has no onboard video so you'll require a GPU as well, bringing the total cost of entry up to about that of an i3 setup... and price being equal, the i3 would be the better purchase. But this is still a solid chip that can easily handle the demands of most PC users.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Okay - Seems to have a faulty core

Pros: Overall, works good now.

Cons: Seems to have a faulty core. (I had all kinds of intermittent issues with pc instability, and it took me about half a year - and a pile of new parts - to trace it to the cpu. The clincher was running memtest86+ in multicore mode and seeing the last spinning cpu indicator halt before the system locked up. It ran fine when running on a single core). Ever since, I just set Windows to operate on 3 cores instead of four and she has been running like a champ ever since. (I couldn't be bothered to go through the warranty process to get a new one, so that is on me).

Other Thoughts: Based on all my reading, the faulty core issue is probably a freak occurrence and would not deter me from buying another one.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's old, but it's still gold!

Pros: Runs all the games buttery smooth

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: bought this on 1/22/2014 and just getting around to writing a review. This processor is still running like a champ I play all my games at max settings and have had 0 issues with it. I maxed out GTA V the other day and it ran buttery smooth.

1 out of 5 eggsWEAK

Pros: Great Hockey Puck!

Cons: This processor is pathetic, its very weak, my first time with AMD and probably the last. I'm not looking to game, I just wanted basic internet, web browser, e-mail, downloads, you tube, type of processing power and this proc disappointed me on all levels, its very slow even with a SSD and clean install of Windows 7 with 24 GB RAM DD3

Other Thoughts: Stick with Intel, 4 cores is just not enough power for today's computers, quad core was great 5-7 years ago with Windows XP, if you are using Windows 7 or newer you need at least 6 to 8 cores or more, seriously!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent CPU

Pros: It's fast and powerful. Plenty of horsepower at stock settings to run my games flawlessly.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: There are faster chips and chips with more cores, but they cost more and will draw more energy from the PSU. This is plenty sufficient for gaming.
