New microarchitecture, new level of performance

Piledriver microarchitecture, a tuned-up Bulldozer, has finally reached the flagship AMD FX processors (the new FX series processors are codenamed Vishera) for improved performance and better energy-efficiency. Four “Piledriver” cores ensure rich, crisp video and seamless multitasking. The AMD Turbo Core technology pushes your core frequencies to the most when you need it most. To top it off, like all other AMD’s Black Edition processors, the new AMD FX 6-core Vishera processor is fully unlocked for fabulous overclocking* capability. Great performance is not the only trick AMD has up their sleeve. Vishera processors are at a reasonable price point. (*AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.)

  • newegg New Piledriver microarchitecture Piledriver microarchitecture is the second generation of AMD Bulldozer microarchitecture. The internal core structure has been modified for higher frequencies even without any changes in the manufacturing process. Piledriver has a more precise branch predictor and a larger instruction window with ISA extensions FMA3 and F16C. The execution units acquired an enhanced scheduler and learned to process individual instructions faster, such as integer and floating-point division. And Piledriver microarchitecture delivers higher power efficiency compared with Bulldozer microarchitecture.
  • newegg Unlocked AMD FX processor with 6 Piledriver cores The native 6-core desktop processor ensures rich, crisp video and seamless multitasking. new Piledriver microarchitecture. 32 nanometer die shrink was designed to reduce leakage for improved efficiency, increased clock rate headroom and better thermals. The AMD unlocked technology offers more headroom for your overclocking (AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.).
  • newegg AMD Turbo technology The AMD FX Processors come equipped with AMD Turbo CORE Technology, a performance boosting technology that helps increase performance on the applications that need it the most.
  • newegg Amazing instruction capabilities Like Bulldozer, Piledriver has some amazing instruction capabilities. Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) increase parallelism tailored for scientific and 3D applications that use heavy floating point calculations. Floating Point Vector Multiply-Accumulate improves throughput and performance on many vector functions (integer and floating point). Advanced Encryption Standard noticeably increases performance on the latest encryption applications like TrueCrypt and benchmarks like PCMark.
  • newegg AMD Hypertransport technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link which helps reduce the number of buses in a system thus reducing system bottlenecks and enabling today's faster microprocessors to use system memory more efficiently in high-end multiprocessor systems.
  • newegg Integrated DRAM Controller with AMD Memory Optimizer Technology AMD FX Vishera Processor features a high-bandwidth, low-latency integrated memory controller that supports faster and low voltage memories and provides new Pre-Fetcher improvements and direct communications to each core in Dual-Core module (APIC registers in each core).

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Bang for the buck

Pros: Just built a friend a gaming rig and got him the same processor as mine. Benchmarked the CPU and to get some comparable from Intel or even AMD, it is anywhere from $100 to $300 more.

Cons: Stock fan is loud when at 100% CPU. Extra cooling is needed to keep it happy.

5 out of 5 eggsHigh bang/ low bucks

Pros: I've had this baby running at a stable OC of 4.85 GHz at a 1.45 vcore for about a year. Loaded temps hardly ever see over 53 to 55 Celcius with an H70 Corsair watercooler. Occasionally I OC it higher (5.1 GHz to get a CPUZ validation for an overclocking site and simply bump the vcore up to 1.48 for that). My system:
AMD FX6350
Asus M5A99X Evo R 2.0
Corsair H70 cooler
Corsair TX850 PSU
Sapphire Radeon HD 6970
Gskill F3 17000 CL9 8Gb
Samsung Evo 840 250Gb ssd
Windows 7 Ultimate X64
WEI scores: CPU- 7.6
RAM- 7.9
Desktop Graphics- 7.9
Gaming graphics- 7.9
Hard disk- 7.9
Passmark 8 benchmark of CPU typically 9100 (oc'ed)

Are there any Intel CPU's that you can buy brand new for a hundred bucks that will out do my FX 6350??
(crickets chirping)

That is all, and good day to you.

Cons: none noted

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value for the money

Pros: 3.9GHz and 6 cores. Excellent performance.

Cons: The stock fan sucks.

Other Thoughts: I give 5 eggs for the processor, despite the terribleness of the stock heat sync and fan. It really sucks. It can't keep the CPU from overheating under load and it gets REALLY loud. Spend the extra $30 or so to get a better heat sync and fan combo. I've had the processor for over a hear but just recently got a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO... can't understand why I didn't do that sooner.

It's a great value for the money, and wasn't worth spending more to get the 8-core FX-8350. I've been very happy with the processor's performance.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good for price!

Pros: Ordered yet another one for client for gaming system build. This CPU is affordable for what's in it and is a great decision for people running high-end graphic programs or gaming. This CPU is used in 2 of my product lines and has never let my clients down. Plenty of processing power with 6 cores!

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic and Cheap

Pros: -Good CPU and easy to overclock.
-Haven't had many issues with it so far.
-Stock speeds are good enough to run just about any game.

Cons: -Seems to be the cause of some micro-stutters while under full load and managing clockspeeds. Setting a single clockspeed fixes this problem all together.

Other Thoughts: Definitely worth the buy. The bulldozer architecture may not have been worth it, but piledriver really fixed a lot of these issues.
