AMD A-Series APU

Get More of What You Want with an AMD A-Series APU

We changed the game for PCs by revolutionizing the APU which combines the power of a multicore CPU with AMD Radeon™ graphics all in one energy-efficient chip.
  • Unlock your system's full potential with HSA-enabled APUs
  • Experience a new level of immersion with AMD TrueAudio technology¹
  • Blaze through apps with AMD Turbo Core technology²
  • Use AMD Mantle technology³ to raise your game to unprecedented levels with hyper-efficient performance
  • Get extreme performance with Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, featuring supercharged AMD Radeon™ R7 graphics.4

So What is HSA, Exactly?

Your APU with HSA = A Team of Specialists

AMD A-Series APU

You can think of HSA as a team with different players lending their unique talents to form one powerful unit. The CPU leads the system through everyday tasks. The GPU can zoom its way through tasks that are particularly data-intensive. Other components work together with the CPU and GPU in various, specialized processing tasks. With each member of the team performing a task that is especially suited to it, the efficiencies are designed to give you an enormous boost in performance.

AMD True-Audio Technology – What's the Difference?

Your Games Now Sound as Good as They Look¹

The expectations of gamers have never been higher. Graphics quality and processing speed have advanced rapidly, and the games of today are light years ahead of those from just a few years ago. But advancements in game audio have been more sporadic and less widely adopted. Sound is a critically important part of the immersive experience for gamers and sound engineers are eager to advance their art, but they haven't enjoyed the same kind of attention that continually drives graphics improvements. That is, until now.

AMD's Revolutionary Mantle

AMD's Mantle is a groundbreaking graphics API that promises to transform the world of game development to help bring better, faster games to the PC. Read on to discover how AMD is working with the game development community to revolutionize the PC gaming experience.

What Mantle Does

AMD A-Series APUMantle is the Harmony of Three Essential Ingredients:
  1. A driver within the AMD Catalyst™ software suite that lets applications speak directly to the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  2. A GPU or APU enabled with the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  3. An application or game written to take advantage of Mantle.

Mantle reduces the CPU's workload by giving developers a way to talk to the GPU directly with much less translation. With less work for the CPU to do, programmers can squeeze much more performance from a system, delivering the greatest benefits in gaming systems where the CPU can be the bottleneck.

What it Means for Gamers

Now that Mantle has freed up some extra CPU capacity, we expect Mantle will lead to better games, and more of them, since Mantle makes game development easier. That's not all Mantle will do for gamers. By shifting work to the GPU, a mid-range or older CPU isn't the same handicap it was before. With Mantle, the GPU becomes the critical part of the system, and GPU upgrades will have a bigger impact than before.

Pros: CPU get hot, so~ Don't count on the stock heat-sink fan if u do any overclock or gaming.

Cons: Very low FPS for Diablo 3 or DOTA 2 with APU only.
Only does Dual Graphic with R7-250, doesn't support any higher models.
APU becomes useless with R7-250x and up.

5 out of 5 eggsAMD A10-7850 Kaveri CPU

Pros: AMD

3.7 Ghz to 4.2 Ghz

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I haven't been able to fully test this product yet, but for what I have used it for it is really fast. When I get some games I'll see what this thing really can do. I'm an AMD guy, but I also like Intel processors. I just prefer AMD products. This CPU is a huge upgrade from my older one. Can't wait to see what this baby can really do. I recommend this product.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic for Budget Gaming Rig!

Pros: * Inexpensive
* Low power requirements
* Surprisingly powerful

Cons: * Stock fan barely sufficient
* Limited CrossFire support (R7 240 / R7 250)

Other Thoughts: Skyrim (with mods), Titanfall, and StarCraft II all run at 1080p with a mix of Ultra/High settings between 30fps-70fps with an average of around 40fps or so.

The main fps killers for this chip are Anti-Aliasing, Ambient Occlusion, excessive Ray-Traced Shadows, and Post-Processing effects. (I usually have to turn these down or off to reach 50fps-70fps in the aforementioned games.)

Models, Textures, and non-post-processing Effects like lens flares, muzzle flashes, water effects, and particles at maximum quality do little to no damage to the framerate whatsoever.

So far, I've been running with the stock fan. Thermal Margin can come to within 30C or so of peak temperature when under load. Idles between 50C-70C (Thermal Margin).

The whole rig runs stable and quiet on 360W with four 120mm case fans.

Cons: The stock cooler kinda blow. Got myself a GAMMAXX 400+ ARCTIC MX-4.

Other Thoughts: For my first ever built. Upgraded from a 2007 eMachine, lol...

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Plenty of overhead to OC. Runs like a champ at 4.7 on liquid cooling. Windows 8.1 seems to like this processor. Dual graphics does fair considering I paired it with a slow R7 250.

Cons: Even OC to 4.7 not too awfully fast on benchmarks. Linux support (as always with AMD) is lacking.

Other Thoughts: I tossed the stock cooler and went with liquid cooled...self explanatory. I truly hope that AMD is on the right track with this one. I want to see them reclaim the throne of awesome processing power. I built this for BOINC and it seems to print pretty good numbers thus far.

4 out of 5 eggsBest Budget PC yet

Pros: Cheap, although it's about 30 dollars cheaper now than when I bought it in 2014.

Runs Steam games well.

Quad core.

Cons: Heat. The stock fan seems to be doing its job, but the computer typically runs about 60 degrees Celsius, more or less.

Not as fast as an i7, but probably on par with an i5.

Power hungry.

Other Thoughts: I've always had budget computers with AMD processors, and this is by far the best one I've had. I'm happy to know that AMD actually makes processors worth using.
