AMD A-Series APU

Get More of What You Want with an AMD A-Series APU

We changed the game for PCs by revolutionizing the APU which combines the power of a multicore CPU with AMD Radeon™ graphics all in one energy-efficient chip.
  • Unlock your system's full potential with HSA-enabled APUs
  • Experience a new level of immersion with AMD TrueAudio technology¹
  • Blaze through apps with AMD Turbo Core technology²
  • Use AMD Mantle technology³ to raise your game to unprecedented levels with hyper-efficient performance
  • Get extreme performance with Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, featuring supercharged AMD Radeon™ R7 graphics.4

So What is HSA, Exactly?

Your APU with HSA = A Team of Specialists

AMD A-Series APU

You can think of HSA as a team with different players lending their unique talents to form one powerful unit. The CPU leads the system through everyday tasks. The GPU can zoom its way through tasks that are particularly data-intensive. Other components work together with the CPU and GPU in various, specialized processing tasks. With each member of the team performing a task that is especially suited to it, the efficiencies are designed to give you an enormous boost in performance.

AMD True-Audio Technology – What's the Difference?

Your Games Now Sound as Good as They Look¹

The expectations of gamers have never been higher. Graphics quality and processing speed have advanced rapidly, and the games of today are light years ahead of those from just a few years ago. But advancements in game audio have been more sporadic and less widely adopted. Sound is a critically important part of the immersive experience for gamers and sound engineers are eager to advance their art, but they haven't enjoyed the same kind of attention that continually drives graphics improvements. That is, until now.

AMD's Revolutionary Mantle

AMD's Mantle is a groundbreaking graphics API that promises to transform the world of game development to help bring better, faster games to the PC. Read on to discover how AMD is working with the game development community to revolutionize the PC gaming experience.

What Mantle Does

AMD A-Series APUMantle is the Harmony of Three Essential Ingredients:
  1. A driver within the AMD Catalyst™ software suite that lets applications speak directly to the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  2. A GPU or APU enabled with the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  3. An application or game written to take advantage of Mantle.

Mantle reduces the CPU's workload by giving developers a way to talk to the GPU directly with much less translation. With less work for the CPU to do, programmers can squeeze much more performance from a system, delivering the greatest benefits in gaming systems where the CPU can be the bottleneck.

What it Means for Gamers

Now that Mantle has freed up some extra CPU capacity, we expect Mantle will lead to better games, and more of them, since Mantle makes game development easier. That's not all Mantle will do for gamers. By shifting work to the GPU, a mid-range or older CPU isn't the same handicap it was before. With Mantle, the GPU becomes the critical part of the system, and GPU upgrades will have a bigger impact than before.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat a Great Looking Box! 5 Golden Eggs!

Pros: I am somewhat high... in the tech knowledge field and am surprised at how incredible this processor operates. Using this in combination with an mATX board, it doesn't slow down a bit. Apparently there's a way to crank out 4.0 GHz out of this bad boy, but I think 3.9 is a nice even number AMD decided to cap it at. The fan it comes with is nice.

Cons: It doesn't come with extra thermal paste because the box is so small, but instead comes with thermal paste already on the fan. "Great!" I thought, "Now all I need to do is get this thermal paste off of my finger!" I quickly ran to the bathroom and ran it under hot water, but it quickly melted itself into my skin. Now that I have become one with the thermal paste, I have to say, life is much different. Maybe if I knew the paste would come pre-applied like some Chinese manufactured mess, I wouldn't have touched that side of the fan! Oh well! I ended up drilling the CPU into the m-ATX board I had. Thermal Paste is for suckers! My machine has never ran so fast (or loud). I would probably give thanks to AMD for such speed, but I cannot emphasize enough the effect of drilling screws into your CPU helps. Buying extra thermal paste is a thing of the past, boys.

Other Thoughts: Incredible product, you may have to improvise. Hope you have a drill!

5 out of 5 eggsAMD APU Wonderful

Pros: 1. Very fast for a 130 dollar processor.
2. Great integration of CPU and GPU. (they work flawlessly together)
3. OC to 4.498 with the Asus crossblade ranger software.
4. Will run games and stream them very well "if" graphics settings are adjusted properly.
5. IF you know what your doing this processor is a great in a budget build.

Cons: Cons well i always can grip about stuff like they could have put a better GPU with this awesome CPU. But as this is my first APU I am plenty happy with it... Sooo not really a con.

Again got to complain graphics are lagging if you want to play every game on "MAX GRAPHICS" but for the money and i did not have to buy a graphics card. So again not really a complaint lol

True complaint... this APU puts off alot of heat. So get your self a GOOD heat sink! I have been buying AMD processors for over a decade and AMD never sends a heat sink that could even handle factory settings. Thats Just AMD.

Other Thoughts: Hey! AMD! make more awesome all in one APUs like this one and I will be buying. (hint hint) put better GPU's in your APU's

I don't understand people complaining about this processor? Some times you get a bad one out of the box. But most of the time I find the complaints to be lack of education. Don't listen to people that say they are computer experts and then OC with a factory heat sink. Or even use the factory heat sink... I bought a water cooler for mine and under 100% load on CPU and GPU i got it up to 55 degrees C and it held there. That is maxed out.

Going to caution people again if you buy this APU buy a GOOD heat sink for it. It will run you an extra 30-60 bucks. Money well spent. And also for people that like to buy cheap to mid of the line mother boards. DON"T!!! Spend money on your board its the foundation of your system and how well it will run. A good mother board with slower Processor will do better then a great Processor and a low end mother board. You can always upgrade your processor at a later date when money comes your way.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Cpu ive ever used

Pros: I locked my cpu into using its max frequency at all times, so that it doesn't dip in performance.(yes this can be destructive if done incorrectly)I have this cpu paired with a radeon 7950 3gb sapphire special boost edition, and I use this for gaming. Here are my insights

*I can play most games maxed out and ill get over 100fps per second without v-sync turned on and the games i can't quite run maxed out run fine on high.

* applications load extremely fast

* video runs incredibly smooth while just using the apu

* Windows itself seems instant and super responsive ( currently running win 10)

* Incredibly stable for being overclocked 24/7, i havent had a blue screen in over a year and its been overclocked from the start.

* To wrap it up ide say for the price and performance this is a clear steal I highly recommend people looking for a cheap powerful build to check into this more.

Cons: * can get pretty hot with included cooling fan especially under heavy load
--I would highly recommend aftermarket cooling, liquid or fan cooled.

other than that I haven't noticed any drawbacks.

Other Thoughts: full build:
Total cost of build: estimated at $1,228.20

OS was free because I was able to get windows 8.1 through dreamspark, and then in turn they upgraded me for free to win 10 professional.

Many people seem to down windows 10 because of what they ask you for when you first start up windows 10. But this is common place ive used Cortana on windows phone for awhile, she gave me estimates on getting to work based on traffic, reminded me about things when i came within range or stores and even auto connected me to wifi while on the move, and many more things. At the cost of giving up information that is virtually everywhere, it's common place to ask you to share that information as well, while Microsoft was the first to out right ask you and inform you companies like google have been collecting information from you for alot longer and without informing you outright. You basically sell your soul when you use google to search since that is the technical acceptance of terms button. And besides if you don't do anything illegal have no worries.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It shipped fast

Cons: I spent $139.99 on a processor with a bad core. i also had to spend a lot of time and energy trying to figure out why my computer was no longer working and resorted to paying $50 to a local computer repair place. the box the processor came in was all battered as if it had been thrown around before they put it in the shipping box.

This just plain flies 40FPS most Games, X-Plane -- 89% in Sandra Lite for <$500
NO video card!!
Try it, You'll like it!

Cons: Competition hates it.
Don't let anybody tell you it can't handle games. It can.

Other Thoughts: Hard to believe these aren't all the rage, as fast and energy efficient as they are.
The Kabini's are it's baby brother and share all the advantages for very low bucks.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: Very nice APU for the money - runs software like Adobe products surprisingly well and can even run new games like Phantom Pain on low settings with very fast memory. Allows overclocking, but gingerly.

Cons: Getting slightly long in the tooth, but still a good deal.

2 out of 5 eggsHot

Pros: It shipped to my home on time.

Cons: The steady temperature my PCU gives me is around 54 C instead of 30 C.

Other Thoughts: I don't know if it is the heat sink and fan that comes with the package but I would not recommend this nightmare to anyone.

5 out of 5 eggsAffordable and Stable

Pros: Ran 24/7 OC'd to 4.5ghz. with Zero crashes for over 400 hours. Never topped out the thermal margin. Water cooled with a H100i on an ASUS A88X-PRO with 32GB DDR 2133 and Win 7 Ultimate.

Runs any game I throw at it.

Cons: None so far. Very happy with it.

Other Thoughts: I designed the box around this processor and I don't ask it to do things it wasn't built to do. You aren't going to get the same performance for this APU that you can get from a $600 discrete video card: so don't expect it. What you can get, is a fast, stable, affordable gaming rig.
