AMD A-Series APU

Get More of What You Want with an AMD A-Series APU

We changed the game for PCs by revolutionizing the APU which combines the power of a multicore CPU with AMD Radeon™ graphics all in one energy-efficient chip.
  • Unlock your system's full potential with HSA-enabled APUs
  • Experience a new level of immersion with AMD TrueAudio technology¹
  • Blaze through apps with AMD Turbo Core technology²
  • Use AMD Mantle technology³ to raise your game to unprecedented levels with hyper-efficient performance
  • Get extreme performance with Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, featuring supercharged AMD Radeon™ R7 graphics.4

So What is HSA, Exactly?

Your APU with HSA = A Team of Specialists

AMD A-Series APU

You can think of HSA as a team with different players lending their unique talents to form one powerful unit. The CPU leads the system through everyday tasks. The GPU can zoom its way through tasks that are particularly data-intensive. Other components work together with the CPU and GPU in various, specialized processing tasks. With each member of the team performing a task that is especially suited to it, the efficiencies are designed to give you an enormous boost in performance.

AMD True-Audio Technology – What's the Difference?

Your Games Now Sound as Good as They Look¹

The expectations of gamers have never been higher. Graphics quality and processing speed have advanced rapidly, and the games of today are light years ahead of those from just a few years ago. But advancements in game audio have been more sporadic and less widely adopted. Sound is a critically important part of the immersive experience for gamers and sound engineers are eager to advance their art, but they haven't enjoyed the same kind of attention that continually drives graphics improvements. That is, until now.

AMD's Revolutionary Mantle

AMD's Mantle is a groundbreaking graphics API that promises to transform the world of game development to help bring better, faster games to the PC. Read on to discover how AMD is working with the game development community to revolutionize the PC gaming experience.

What Mantle Does

AMD A-Series APUMantle is the Harmony of Three Essential Ingredients:
  1. A driver within the AMD Catalyst™ software suite that lets applications speak directly to the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  2. A GPU or APU enabled with the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  3. An application or game written to take advantage of Mantle.

Mantle reduces the CPU's workload by giving developers a way to talk to the GPU directly with much less translation. With less work for the CPU to do, programmers can squeeze much more performance from a system, delivering the greatest benefits in gaming systems where the CPU can be the bottleneck.

What it Means for Gamers

Now that Mantle has freed up some extra CPU capacity, we expect Mantle will lead to better games, and more of them, since Mantle makes game development easier. That's not all Mantle will do for gamers. By shifting work to the GPU, a mid-range or older CPU isn't the same handicap it was before. With Mantle, the GPU becomes the critical part of the system, and GPU upgrades will have a bigger impact than before.

5 out of 5 eggsAMD solid CPU

Pros: Solid CPU! Allows very good graphics by adding a single graphics card. I added a R-7 card, great results, without spending a lot!

Cons: Not for aggressive OC.

Other Thoughts: I have used many AMD CPUs and APUs. Kaveri is very solid

5 out of 5 eggsA10 7850K

Pros: First off, WOW. This APU is awesome. If you tweak your settings a little you can play Far Cry 3 mostly high 40fps 900p. It gets the job done really well, great overclocker too. For a first time build, this gets my recommendation hands down. Dual Graphics also gives this a great upgrade path. Good one AMD.

Cons: Not great cpu upgrade path

5 out of 5 eggsLet's use Kaveri on XP32!

Pros: Trinity to Kaveri is ridiculous. 20% faster is no joke. At stock speeds, it's faster than my highest (and unstable) OC on Trinity. Not gonna bother trying to do any real overclocking. Forced turbo bakes a pie in ~18s. That's insane given what I'm used to.

Runs RAM at 2400 without burning down the house. This is a good thing. I'm using all kinds of custom cooling, but Trinity would go nuts and have things running at over 70C in that mode.

I can't comment on how fast the GPU is because I'm using a 260X as my primary, but the integrated on Trinity was very impressive and these drivers are better apparently. nVidia Chameleon demo works again.

Cons: Speaking of GPU drivers, just get the ones from Lenovo if you're hard up enough to inch another year out of your XP32 stuff. They have the monitor hz glitch from 13.6 or whatever it was, but they work. I'll deal with it since I need a new monitor anyways. OpenGL is broken on non-lenovo drivers so don't bother.

Other Thoughts: Is it worth the effort? probably not, but I'm strange kinda cat.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU/APU

Pros: It's fast. Even though my older 6800k could clock to 5GHz this CPU is just as fast at stock speeds. Plus crossfiring the R7 graphics with my R9270x is great. It handles all my games at ultra (Skyrim, Crysis etc).

Cons: It doesn't like being over clocked passed 4.1GHz but thats ok you dont really need to over clock.

5 out of 5 eggsGood CPU

Pros: - Good Apu

-Good Value per Dollar compared to other Apus/Cpus

-Overclocks well.

- good integrated graphics for low-end gaming.

- stock fan/ Heat Sink ok for regular use

Cons: -heatsink or fan good for alittle overclocking not much (with good airflow)

Other Thoughts: Specs:
Motherboard: Asus Crossblade Ranger
Cpu: AMD 7850k
Cooler: Corsair H75 (Watercooling)
Gpu: R9 280x TDFD (XFX)
Ram: 2133 mhz AMD Gamer Series Ram

have this cpu curerently running overclocked at 4.5 GHZ with AIO watercooling setup running at 31 degrees idle and 53 degrees max load. pretty good Apu that wont break the bank yet wont impede performance as a result. plan on replacing when the new Apu launches. anyways good job AMD Keep it up

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: Works fine and the video overclocks easy on air. Can build a rocking little system with a crossfired card for ~$1/2 a K if you shop smart.

Cons: Regular price is still a little pricey for the performance.

Other Thoughts: This is the second one I've bought and it overclocks better than the first.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat APU

Pros: Great all around processing and video capabilities.
Overclocks well if you have better cooling than stock available to you.

Used for school work, Skype, Minecraft, WOW, and streaming video.

Cons: The stock cpu cooler is not adequate for long sessions of gaming, or overclocking. I built a mini-itx system for my daughter and had trouble with stability due to the heatsink and a case with less than stellar airflow.

For someone who does not play PC games for extended periods of time and does not overclock, the stock cooling should suffice.

AMD gives you all of the software and bios options to OC these chips automatically but hold off until you have the right cooling for stability.

Other Thoughts: With a Samuel 17 heatsink and kukri blade fan I was able to overclock up to 4.4ghz in a cramped case. Water cooling would be even better. Modular psu is advisable for a tight mini-itx build.

Samsung 250gb SSD
Prolimatech Samuel 17 Heatsink w/120mm Titan Kukri fan
ASROCK fm2a88itx+ mobo
Corsair 750watt bronze, modded/used psu w/reversed fan direction.
AMD Radeon 2400 ddr3 memory 2 x 4gb sticks
DIY PC Cube Mini-itx case with airflow reversed.
