AMD A-Series APU

Get More of What You Want with an AMD A-Series APU

We changed the game for PCs by revolutionizing the APU which combines the power of a multicore CPU with AMD Radeon™ graphics all in one energy-efficient chip.
  • Unlock your system's full potential with HSA-enabled APUs
  • Experience a new level of immersion with AMD TrueAudio technology¹
  • Blaze through apps with AMD Turbo Core technology²
  • Use AMD Mantle technology³ to raise your game to unprecedented levels with hyper-efficient performance
  • Get extreme performance with Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, featuring supercharged AMD Radeon™ R7 graphics.4

So What is HSA, Exactly?

Your APU with HSA = A Team of Specialists

AMD A-Series APU

You can think of HSA as a team with different players lending their unique talents to form one powerful unit. The CPU leads the system through everyday tasks. The GPU can zoom its way through tasks that are particularly data-intensive. Other components work together with the CPU and GPU in various, specialized processing tasks. With each member of the team performing a task that is especially suited to it, the efficiencies are designed to give you an enormous boost in performance.

AMD True-Audio Technology – What's the Difference?

Your Games Now Sound as Good as They Look¹

The expectations of gamers have never been higher. Graphics quality and processing speed have advanced rapidly, and the games of today are light years ahead of those from just a few years ago. But advancements in game audio have been more sporadic and less widely adopted. Sound is a critically important part of the immersive experience for gamers and sound engineers are eager to advance their art, but they haven't enjoyed the same kind of attention that continually drives graphics improvements. That is, until now.

AMD's Revolutionary Mantle

AMD's Mantle is a groundbreaking graphics API that promises to transform the world of game development to help bring better, faster games to the PC. Read on to discover how AMD is working with the game development community to revolutionize the PC gaming experience.

What Mantle Does

AMD A-Series APUMantle is the Harmony of Three Essential Ingredients:
  1. A driver within the AMD Catalyst™ software suite that lets applications speak directly to the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  2. A GPU or APU enabled with the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  3. An application or game written to take advantage of Mantle.

Mantle reduces the CPU's workload by giving developers a way to talk to the GPU directly with much less translation. With less work for the CPU to do, programmers can squeeze much more performance from a system, delivering the greatest benefits in gaming systems where the CPU can be the bottleneck.

What it Means for Gamers

Now that Mantle has freed up some extra CPU capacity, we expect Mantle will lead to better games, and more of them, since Mantle makes game development easier. That's not all Mantle will do for gamers. By shifting work to the GPU, a mid-range or older CPU isn't the same handicap it was before. With Mantle, the GPU becomes the critical part of the system, and GPU upgrades will have a bigger impact than before.

5 out of 5 eggsAMD A10-7850K

Pros: Lightning quick, plays anything with good FPS.

Boot time is <6 seconds (using an SSD / 16 DDR2 @2100mhz)

Got here fast as usual. Everything in my build worked as usual. New Egg A+++.

Cons: Not a con and not the first to say this but it runs hot; only meaning the stock cooler is NOT up to the task, not that the heat is unmanageable Stock I could get temps throttling hot and the CPU fan running 100%. I added a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO and idle temps went from 45 to 25 C. No matter what I throw at it now temps stay below 50 C (stock settings).

Other Thoughts: This is my 5th AMD processor and 3rd build. Always satisfied and price to performance is exceptional.

Build:
Gigabyte F2A88 MATX
Gskil 16 G PC 17000
550 Watt PSU
60 G Corsair SSD
A10 7850K
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler
win8.1 64bit
LG external DVD Driver
and an 500 GB hard drive I had lying around.
Shoved into an old mid Compaq case (the cooler doesn't fit a mid case BTW without um... modification).

5 out of 5 eggs12 Cores of Happy

Pros: Had it for six months works pretty good so far. Runs games well.

Cons: No issues so far although although the video is not recognized correctly by AMD's own software is kinda odd.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Cooler

Pros: Great performance for the price.

Quiet.

Cons: Isn't free

Other Thoughts: I've been using this to keep my 4790k chip cool for past 2 months.

It keeps the chip cool and does not make alot of noise.

Installation was easy (installed plenty of Coolmaster CPU coolers, so I was familiar with the mounting/installation procedures for both intel and amd setups.

If you never install a cooler before skip the directions and just look up a few videos on you tube for your cooler. Much easier for a first timer that way.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Ram

Pros: Fast ram.

Good heat sinks.

Easily detected and ran at rated speeds.

Helped me get the most out of a Kaveri 7850k build for a friend.

Cons: Not cheap.

Other Thoughts: Used this ram in a kaveri Build for a friend who was on a budget.

Knowing that AmD APUs benefit greatly by using fast 1866+ ram I choose this kit to give him the most I could for his budget rig.

The MSI A88XM FM2+ board easily set the ram the the intel memory profile so no other settings were needed to get this ram to run at rated speed. Ram heat sinks work well, ram never felt Hot just warm to the touch.

Although there is a price premium for this ram for my friends build it helped make a for fast, small effective build.

By choosing this ram it helped get much higher frames at 1080p settings compared to 1866-2133 DDR3 ram. When you are using integrated iGPU every once of performance counts. This ram helped achieve that.

As always GSkill put out a great product.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Chip

Pros: All around good chip

Huge increase in transistor density compared to previous gen Richland.

Overall great performance.

Can use 2400mhz+ RAm for the iGPU.

iGPU overclocks easily even on stock Heatsink. Heat with only a mild iGPU overclock wasn't an issue.

Cons: Stock Heatsink leaves a lot to be desired. For more aggressive overclocks 950mhz+ /on the iGPU 4 ghz+ on the CPU side you will want a better after market cooler.

You can safely do 900mhz iGPU on the stock Heatsink if no adjustments are done to the CPU clocks and if your case has moderate ventilation (1-2 120mm fans).

Really need 2133+ ram to get the most out of the iGPU. The 2400 Gskill trident ram was great and provided good frames.

Other Thoughts: Bought this chip for a build for a coworker for his first PC.
Games he plays League of legends, Heartstone, MW3, Diablo 3, TF2. So not games that require high end hardware.
I've built systems with previous gen APU LLano, Trinity, Richland. As well as Sandy, Ivy and Haswell builds.
As usual this chip does not disappoint. It has more then enough CPU horsepower for daily tasks, and its integrated GPU is great.
I built his system using an MSI microatx A88Xm FM2+ board (which I love btw).
I combined that with 16 gigs of GSkiLL Trident 2400 MHz ram.(great ram for this APU).
Only 1 WD 1 TB blue drive for now (he was on a tight budget)

The system is very quiet fast an responsive.
I only overclocked the iGPU to 900 MHz since I was using the stock fan. Combined with the 2400 MHz ram it gave great performance.

My friend is very happy, all his games run great. Now he has a descent system that in year he can add a video card/SSD as his budget permits.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: I was a bit skeptical, but it runs great. I got it so my kids could put together their own PC. They are able to run Skyrim fine but looks a little off on ultra settings.

Cons: I put a different heat sink on it, nothing fancy, but i was a bit unimpressed with the provided fan/aluminum heat sink... it might have been fine but I had the other laying around.

5 out of 5 eggsThe beginning of the end for dGPUs?

Pros: This APU has been adequate for modest gaming on a 1920x1200 monitor. Runs well in plenty of other applications such as live screen recording and video editing.

Cons: I can only recommend this to gamers who don't mind running scaled back settings. The 7850K is a better match for sub-1080 monitors. I also found that in the heat of summer, the stock fan got pretty loud so I used the configurable TDP option to change it to 65W.

Other Thoughts: Note that this is installed in a low profile, small form factor case Thermaltake SD101.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Well it seems to have very good reviews, i must of had a dud out of the bunch

Cons: Received this processor and installed into a new office build i was doing for my mom, once installed it never ran properly.

Temps were anywhere from 65C to 75C at idle on the Bios. Constantly crashing and the computer was running slow, Tried replaced the stock cooler (Which is a piece of garbage IMO) with the cooler master hyper t4, That didn't help the temps at all.

Other Thoughts: In the process of an RMA right now, Hopefully when the new one comes it works properly and i will update this review. This is the first (out of 6) builds that i have ever had a faulty product.

5 out of 5 eggsEverything you expect from AMD & more!

Pros: FM2+ - Most current board & super feature rich.
R7 iGPU - Not enough can be said about this.
PCI-e - Supports 3.0 for great bandwidth.
Thermal - Runs cool lower TDP than previous A-series
Cost - Great for those starting out & want to get it all.

Cons: None! Just remember that you will want DDR3-1866 or better RAM to get the most out of your gaming.

Other Thoughts: First off I've had this APU for over 6 months now. I have run it under water & air cooling and couldn't be happier with the thermal results. Stock fans are stock fans but if you're not overclocking they work great. Not only does the CPU overclock well, but so does the iGPU. Even under full load on air I have not been able to break 60C yet. This chip will handle every day computer use & moderate gaming without batting an eye. Don't let nay sayers get you down about buying an APU, this is one of the best bang for your buck chips out there today. 1080p w/ Low to Medium setting on modern games (even w/o mantle active) I am able to pull 30-45fps. You don't even have to worry about the future thanks to being able to use Dual Graphics with an R7 250 which will get you to Medium to High settings at 30-45 fps. Down the road you can also still add a decent GPU without fear of losing any performance. Just recently I added a dedicated GPU & I haven't had a single issue running my R9 270x on High to Max settings at 60+ fps. With every thing that AMD is putting into their new chips, the future will only get better for this chip and what it represents.

5 out of 5 eggsReally Good APU

Pros: This APU gets pretty good frame rates in games, unless you don't have high speed RAM. I was able to overclok both the CPU and iGPU but not much.

Cons: Would've been nice to get a better overclock, I was only able to get the CPU to 4GHz and the iGPU to 950MHz without upping the voltage.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you get 2133MHz RAM or better for optimal performance.
