AMD A-Series APU

Get More of What You Want with an AMD A-Series APU

We changed the game for PCs by revolutionizing the APU which combines the power of a multicore CPU with AMD Radeon™ graphics all in one energy-efficient chip.
  • Unlock your system's full potential with HSA-enabled APUs
  • Experience a new level of immersion with AMD TrueAudio technology¹
  • Blaze through apps with AMD Turbo Core technology²
  • Use AMD Mantle technology³ to raise your game to unprecedented levels with hyper-efficient performance
  • Get extreme performance with Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, featuring supercharged AMD Radeon™ R7 graphics.4

So What is HSA, Exactly?

Your APU with HSA = A Team of Specialists

AMD A-Series APU

You can think of HSA as a team with different players lending their unique talents to form one powerful unit. The CPU leads the system through everyday tasks. The GPU can zoom its way through tasks that are particularly data-intensive. Other components work together with the CPU and GPU in various, specialized processing tasks. With each member of the team performing a task that is especially suited to it, the efficiencies are designed to give you an enormous boost in performance.

AMD True-Audio Technology – What's the Difference?

Your Games Now Sound as Good as They Look¹

The expectations of gamers have never been higher. Graphics quality and processing speed have advanced rapidly, and the games of today are light years ahead of those from just a few years ago. But advancements in game audio have been more sporadic and less widely adopted. Sound is a critically important part of the immersive experience for gamers and sound engineers are eager to advance their art, but they haven't enjoyed the same kind of attention that continually drives graphics improvements. That is, until now.

AMD's Revolutionary Mantle

AMD's Mantle is a groundbreaking graphics API that promises to transform the world of game development to help bring better, faster games to the PC. Read on to discover how AMD is working with the game development community to revolutionize the PC gaming experience.

What Mantle Does

AMD A-Series APUMantle is the Harmony of Three Essential Ingredients:
  1. A driver within the AMD Catalyst™ software suite that lets applications speak directly to the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  2. A GPU or APU enabled with the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  3. An application or game written to take advantage of Mantle.

Mantle reduces the CPU's workload by giving developers a way to talk to the GPU directly with much less translation. With less work for the CPU to do, programmers can squeeze much more performance from a system, delivering the greatest benefits in gaming systems where the CPU can be the bottleneck.

What it Means for Gamers

Now that Mantle has freed up some extra CPU capacity, we expect Mantle will lead to better games, and more of them, since Mantle makes game development easier. That's not all Mantle will do for gamers. By shifting work to the GPU, a mid-range or older CPU isn't the same handicap it was before. With Mantle, the GPU becomes the critical part of the system, and GPU upgrades will have a bigger impact than before.

5 out of 5 eggsMy review

Pros: Fast, built in graphics that are actually fairly decent for onboard, definitely an impressive little chip for what it is.

Cons: None that I can see.

Other Thoughts: Didn't use the factory cooler that comes with it but instead used a Cooler Master GeminII M4 due to clearance issues but was able to use a standard fan instead of the slim fan which comes with that cooler. I'm using it with the MSI A88XM Gaming motherboard and it's been great. I'm using Ubuntu and I built this mainly for htpc and also steam client to play games on my tv.

Just ordered an MSI r7 250 to try out dual graphics with it.

5 out of 5 eggsRuns like a charm

Pros: Runs well
Good price

Cons: Haven't found any yet

Other Thoughts: Using:
1. AMD Radeon R9 2400 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400
2. ASRock FM2A88X-ITX+ FM2+ / FM2 AMD A88X (Bolton D4) SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI Mini ITX AMD Motherboard
3. CORSAIR Hydro Series H60 (CW-9060007-WW) High Performance Water / Liquid CPU Cooler. 120mm
4. EVGA 600 B 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified 600W Active PFC ATX12V v2.31/EPS 12V v2.91

Runs great with this set up, certain games fun very well. Most high end games run well on lower settings. I'm using this without a video card. No lag, if there is I haven't noticed it.

5 out of 5 eggsWay better than I thought

Pros: Fast, Actually has gaming power. See other.

Was able to tweak CPU ratio to 4.2 with a Nepton 120XL water cooler.
GPU ratios were increased by 33% according to my Mobo.

Cons: Doesn't make me sandwiches.

Or rub my back.

Maybe it runs hot if you use air cooling? Not a problem with mine, I used water cooling and even after tweaking ratios, it doesn't seem to idle above 35C and haven't seen it go above 58C yet. Seen some people say it runs hot. Haven't had an issue with heat so far.

Other Thoughts: I had been reading reviews of this processor for weeks now. I was doubtful of its claims of it being able to play games. In my old system I had a Radeon 5850, and it struggled to play Metro last light. I got an average of 5-10 FPS, at lowest setting.
With this APU alone it ran Metro slightly better, but it was playable. After tweaking specs and giving the GPU 2gigs to work with. I have smooth gameplay at lowest setting, when as before I couldn't play more than 5 minutes.
I need a smooth framerate or I refuse to play.
Note my main monitor is 1600x900, but I also have a second one going at all times at 1280x1024. I have Facebook, Youtube, and a couple other... windows... open in my second monitor...

Anyway, I was planning to plug in a R9 290X or a 295 when I could. But with it running as well as it does, I can wait a while and probably grab the 295 or wait for the next series to come out. All of my games and ones that wouldn't run before with the 5850, are playable now.

5 out of 5 eggsGood CPU, hot in HTPC

Pros: Pretty speedy for what it is. Using it to build a HTPC in a mini itx case.

Cons: Runs hot on stock cooler, temps were at max just doing normal task. Ordered a closed loop cooler to correct this.

Other Thoughts: If putting in a small case get a better cooler for it. Would have given it 4 stars for the heat, but I don't think target consumer is people putting it in a tiny case.

5 out of 5 eggsThe little APU that could!

Pros: 2

I purchased the A10 7850k for use in a small form factor home theater pc build that I was working on. Despite reading many reviews stating how well this APU performed I was skeptical; how could this chip possibly run games so well without a video card? Boy was I in for a surprise. This chip has handled everything I've thrown at it so far with ease. With mantle enabled in Battlefield 4 this chip runs at a steady 40 fps on medium settings at 1080p. The chip also stays true to its -K label and over clocks both the internal GPU as well as the CPU like a champ. I would recommend this APU to anyone, and am definitely going to keep an eye on all future AMD APU's

Cons: Really none, except FM2+ socket may not be used after this generation so upgrade options will be limited.

4 out of 5 eggsgood for you htpc

Pros: Wonderful htpc cpu. Have it in a Elite 130 cae and plays movies in HD or watch streaming movies/shows at 1080p, no problem.

Cons: Not a serious gaming cpu. Tried it on WoW at 1080p. Can only get 40 fps when set to Good. Not sure why people say they can max the game out and get 60fps. Probly not running 1080p.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome APU!

Pros: Incredible power in a very small package.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The APU and stock heat sink are tiny. :p But the power of this little 95w APU is uncanny.

5 out of 5 eggsAMD solid CPU

Pros: Solid CPU! Allows very good graphics by adding a single graphics card. I added a R-7 card, great results, without spending a lot!

Cons: Not for aggressive OC.

Other Thoughts: I have used many AMD CPUs and APUs. Kaveri is very solid
