So What is HSA, Exactly?

Your APU with HSA = A Team of Specialists

AMD A-Series APU

You can think of HSA as a team with different players lending their unique talents to form one powerful unit. The CPU leads the system through everyday tasks. The GPU can zoom its way through tasks that are particularly data-intensive. Other components work together with the CPU and GPU in various, specialized processing tasks. With each member of the team performing a task that is especially suited to it, the efficiencies are designed to give you an enormous boost in performance.

AMD True-Audio Technology – What's the Difference?

Your Games Now Sound as Good as They Look¹

The expectations of gamers have never been higher. Graphics quality and processing speed have advanced rapidly, and the games of today are light years ahead of those from just a few years ago. But advancements in game audio have been more sporadic and less widely adopted. Sound is a critically important part of the immersive experience for gamers and sound engineers are eager to advance their art, but they haven't enjoyed the same kind of attention that continually drives graphics improvements. That is, until now.

AMD's Revolutionary Mantle

AMD's Mantle is a groundbreaking graphics API that promises to transform the world of game development to help bring better, faster games to the PC. Read on to discover how AMD is working with the game development community to revolutionize the PC gaming experience.

What Mantle Does

AMD A-Series APUMantle is the Harmony of Three Essential Ingredients:
  1. A driver within the AMD Catalyst™ software suite that lets applications speak directly to the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  2. A GPU or APU enabled with the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  3. An application or game written to take advantage of Mantle.

Mantle reduces the CPU's workload by giving developers a way to talk to the GPU directly with much less translation. With less work for the CPU to do, programmers can squeeze much more performance from a system, delivering the greatest benefits in gaming systems where the CPU can be the bottleneck.

What it Means for Gamers

Now that Mantle has freed up some extra CPU capacity, we expect Mantle will lead to better games, and more of them, since Mantle makes game development easier. That's not all Mantle will do for gamers. By shifting work to the GPU, a mid-range or older CPU isn't the same handicap it was before. With Mantle, the GPU becomes the critical part of the system, and GPU upgrades will have a bigger impact than before.

5 out of 5 eggsThis is a great CPU.

Pros: This is a great CPU at a great price.

Cons: None that I can see.

Other Thoughts: I build and purchase almost exclusively AMD CPUs. This does not disappoint.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for a budget-friendly build

Pros: This processor is a great way to get a quad-core cpu as well as graphics for a decent price. I've never had any problems with the it feeling slow or sluggish running applications, and it can push decently high graphics setting in most games, usually at least the "medium" preset.

Cons: After having this processor for over a year, I've found myself longing for better graphics performance, especially in the newest games. In GTA V, I have to play at the lowest possible settings in order for the game to even be playable. I won't take any eggs off for this though because I knew this chip wouldn't perform as well as other gpus when I bought it.

Other Thoughts: I got this processor because all I previously had was an old netbook that can't even handle 480p videos on youtube. All in all, it's a great choice to get you on your feet. If you don't need great graphics performance, it's a good permanent solution (parents, grandparents, office environment). However, if you plan to play games, and you can afford it, I would definitely spend the extra money on a better graphics card.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive

Pros: A lot of power in this little thing. Used it for an NES pc build I wanted to do. Wanted to be able to play any of my games while in descent setting at 1080p but in a very small and portable form factor. This card did the trick just perfect.

Cons: Trying to find the right cooling solution for such a tiny case was hard, but that really has nothing to do with the APU and more about where I was trying to stuff it. It still runs pretty hot, but that expected for what it does. I ended up using a small form factor fan from zalman it it does the job pretty well, hopefully I'll see a better fan for small PC's coming up soon.

Other Thoughts: This thing shows that there is definitely some potential in this market. Im pretty excited to see what AMD can make next in this small form factor but still powerful market.

5 out of 5 eggsMore and more and more

Pros: It's working fine on a Linux Mint install. Great speed, low heat for my usage and I haven't been bogged down when performing any of my day to day activities on the computer. I've even had to give up some of my routines of finding something to do while something loads...
I've not attempted any overclocking or anything as it meets or exceeds all of my needs.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Moving from a ten year old duo core to this was like stepping out of the farm house in Kansas to find myself in Oz!

4 out of 5 eggsgreat for certain applications

Pros: new architecture and seriously powerful integrated graphics
pcie 3.0 support
if HSA and HuMA take off this has support for that
its pretty snappy not amazingly fast but isn't super slow

Cons: honestly for gaming get a cheap i5 over this. this is NOT a gaming cpu

Other Thoughts: Best uses for this cpu would be HTPC or a daily driver for someone who doesn't game.

5 out of 5 eggsQuite a lot of bang for buck

Pros: Excellent performer when overclocking. CPU at 4500 and GPU at 950 all day every day with almost no tinkering (Running ASUS AI Suite 3 on ROG Crossblade Ranger motherboard)

iGPU works much better than I had thought it would

Gives you some very decent performance for the money

Cons: Can't really knock this one. It does everything you ask it to with a smile.

Other Thoughts: As an old AMD guy I had to give AMD a shot again after so many years. The price is hard to pass up as well. This was my first build after a 9 year break and I wasn't let down. I know a lot of people ask the question of how awesome of a system they can build for almost no dollars and this is solid starting point. I know they will be releasing a new APU not too long from now, but you can't beat the price tag on this A10-7850 Kaveri. At some point I'm sure I'll be picking up a new video card for it, but in the mean time this will get you moving for cheap!
This will play just about anything on high/ultra settings on 720p but will start to show it's shortcomings at 1080p on medium/high. Don't be turned off by that though because you're still running without an additional graphics card!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome APU

Pros: First off, I love this APU! It's a solid performer and it's just the right product for my home office build. Because it's for my home office, I don't feel the need to overclock it like I do with all my other computers in the house, so I can't comment on how well it overclocks. I love the integrated graphics, which saved me money on having to purchase a separate graphics card to power my three 24" monitors.

Cons: None at all.... I love it!

Other Thoughts: I couldn't be happier with this APU, it's perfect for my needs. Paired with fast memory & SSD, my system literally flies! Specs below:

AMD A10-7850K APU
MSI A88xm Gaming Motherboard
G.Skill 16GB DD3 2400 MHz Memory
Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD
OCZ 600 Watt PS
Fractal Design R4 Case (Silent, I love it)

2 out of 5 eggsSlow Graphics and CPU

Pros: If you want a small form factor rig or MINI ITX, this is probably one of your few options, especially if the case is too small for GPUs.

Cons: It could run most games on low to medium settings at 30fps or less. Basically high end PS2 graphics and low end PS3 graphics, which for the price of the APU alone seems pretty weak.

5 out of 5 eggsAstounding

Pros: Fast
Fair price
Easy installation
Small but decent and quiet fan

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: When a co-worker of mine encouraged me to try out an AMD processor with APU graphics, I was very skeptical. I have ALWAYS purchased Intel with very expensive video cards in the past. That way the machines generally last me 7 years or so. However, my systems would cost around $1500 to $2000. This time around I built my gaming/media system around this chip with the MSI A88XM motherboard and a HyperX SSD and memory. I am absolutely amazed at how well this combination performs. I am very happy.
