AMD A-Series APU

Get More of What You Want with an AMD A-Series APU

We changed the game for PCs by revolutionizing the APU which combines the power of a multicore CPU with AMD Radeon™ graphics all in one energy-efficient chip.
  • Unlock your system's full potential with HSA-enabled APUs
  • Experience a new level of immersion with AMD TrueAudio technology¹

  • Get extreme performance with Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, featuring supercharged AMD Radeon™ R7 graphics.4

So What is HSA, Exactly?

Your APU with HSA = A Team of Specialists

AMD A-Series APU

You can think of HSA as a team with different players lending their unique talents to form one powerful unit. The CPU leads the system through everyday tasks. The GPU can zoom its way through tasks that are particularly data-intensive. Other components work together with the CPU and GPU in various, specialized processing tasks. With each member of the team performing a task that is especially suited to it, the efficiencies are designed to give you an enormous boost in performance.

AMD True-Audio Technology – What's the Difference?

Your Games Now Sound as Good as They Look¹

The expectations of gamers have never been higher. Graphics quality and processing speed have advanced rapidly, and the games of today are light years ahead of those from just a few years ago. But advancements in game audio have been more sporadic and less widely adopted. Sound is a critically important part of the immersive experience for gamers and sound engineers are eager to advance their art, but they haven't enjoyed the same kind of attention that continually drives graphics improvements. That is, until now.

AMD's Revolutionary Mantle

AMD's Mantle is a groundbreaking graphics API that promises to transform the world of game development to help bring better, faster games to the PC. Read on to discover how AMD is working with the game development community to revolutionize the PC gaming experience.

What Mantle Does

AMD A-Series APUMantle is the Harmony of Three Essential Ingredients:
  1. A driver within the AMD Catalyst™ software suite that lets applications speak directly to the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  2. A GPU or APU enabled with the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  3. An application or game written to take advantage of Mantle.

Mantle reduces the CPU's workload by giving developers a way to talk to the GPU directly with much less translation. With less work for the CPU to do, programmers can squeeze much more performance from a system, delivering the greatest benefits in gaming systems where the CPU can be the bottleneck.

What it Means for Gamers

Now that Mantle has freed up some extra CPU capacity, we expect Mantle will lead to better games, and more of them, since Mantle makes game development easier. That's not all Mantle will do for gamers. By shifting work to the GPU, a mid-range or older CPU isn't the same handicap it was before. With Mantle, the GPU becomes the critical part of the system, and GPU upgrades will have a bigger impact than before.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for mid-range gaming

Pros: This chip will leave Intel graphics in the dust ! I was running Far Cry 4 with just this APU without a problem. This is a great budget solution without the need for a graphics card.

Cons: OK if you have a boat-load of money, you are better off with a AMD FX 8 core or an Intel Core I-5 or I-7 with a additional graphics card for high end gaming.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: APU allows passable gaming performance in situations you either can't or don't want to use a discrete GPU.
My particular sample overclocked very well as I was able to coax 4.7GHz out of it even on a mini-itx platform.
Included a heatsink/fan combo that came in handy as a temporary solution while I sorted out a more preferred cooling setup.

Cons: Don't expect per core cpu performance to match anything semi-recent by Intel, but it's by no means sluggish.

Other Thoughts: It's a very suitable all in one option for those who either can't or don't want to use a dedicated video card due to either cost or size constraints. It was ideal for me in that I wanted it for a very compact mini-itx HTPC build which could pull light usage gaming duty when needed.

5 out of 5 eggsAMD A10-7850K

Pros: I bought this processor with a combo-kit to upgrade a clients old PC. All in all I couldn't be much more impressed with the product. For a little over $300.00 the clients machine was upgraded very nicely. While AMD may have slipped behind Intel considerably in the matter of CPU's, the notion of building the graphics into the CPU is a slam dunk for those looking for a budget processor with some real kick.

Cons: Can be a bit finnicky with some memory chips

Other Thoughts: Dollar for dollar you can't beat this chip if you are looking to save a few bucks on your build.

5 out of 5 eggsfirst apu. impressed

Pros: $135 paired with a $60 ASRock FM2A78M-HD+ R2.0 mobo 16gb 2400mhz gskill snipers. corsair cx500watt psu. 120gb hyperx savage boot ssd. old free HDD. old free case thats wide enough for a hyper212evo. you got yourself a $400 dx12 ready gaming/productivity beast.

this processor was behind the best bang for buck PC ive ever built. been disappointed with AMD like many others, had a very well versed friend in the IT world educate me on team red.
and the things ive learned and done with this APU.
at the end of the day with his guiding hand this APU was able to OC no issue to 4.6ghz gfx clock at 933mhz with a hyper 212 cooling it. he had to OC the NB slightly to help with gfx using system ram. he directed me to no go under 2400mhz in terms of ram clock speed and 2gb of system ram dedicated to gpu.
was able to play any game max settings 720p 60fps. console killer.
most games playable with setting tweaking at 1080p 40-60fps.
after about a month in started getting a little crashy with demanding games. I pulled back the NB OC to stock and gfx OC to 870mhz and everything is stable again lost a couple fps in doing so.
but with this there is no excuse for any console gamer to not also have a pc to game on for less than the price of their console.
and bonus you have an unused pci3 slot that can have as hardcore of a gpu as youd like in it. for future upgrade.
my friend stated there was no bottlenecking on a 980 and a little on a 980ti only at 1080. but if youre going to spend that much on a gpu i doubt your shopping team red.

Cons: it was done right. unless if I was super lucky in silicon lottery. no cons

2 out of 5 eggsWaste of money

Pros: Comes with fan. There is nothing in the description that says anything about a fan. I was tricked into buying a cooler master fan because of that. In addition, it turned out that my existing Athlon (Socket AM2) fan would have worked also.

Cons: This processor was a big disappointment. The claim of 12 cores is ridiculous. Only 4 cpu cores are usable and they are pokey ones at that. I have not found any software or codecs that can access the GPU cores. So they are dead weight. Last I heard, the GPU cores were proprietary so nobody except AMD can write code for them. Everything I have is all to happy to use an Intel or Cuda GPU core, but not AMD Radeon.

Other Thoughts: I got this because I thought the 6 GPU cores would speed up the many intensive video conversions that I do. Sadly, nothing I have will access the AMD GPU cores. So they are dead weight. The overall speed of this processor is only marginally faster than a 3GHz dual core Athlon that I replaced - and this one is 4 cores running at 3.7GHz In theory, it should be a minimum of twice as fast, but its only marginally faster. One source said that this processor was really just two cores and the other two were AMD's version of hyperthreading. In any case, the CPU temp runs about 140F at idle and 180F when converting a video.

Bottom line, don't waste your money on this chip. Get a processor with 6 or 8 real cores (not hyperthreaded). For GPUs, stick with Nvidia or Intel - they are supported by the software.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat APU for the money.

Pros: I love this APU, it runs great, low power, and is very stable. I'm saving up to buy a video card that will work with it as well. Though even alone it can run GTA V just fine at over 30 FPS. So I would say it has great performance for the money. No video card required, however it can be added later.
I can overclock if I want with ease.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I saved so much money, and I'll be able to do an easy video card upgrade without getting rid of a video card later down the road. APUs are great for the person who does not want to burn money for no reason.
Thank you AMD for being so awesome.
As a side note, I matched this APU with an Asus A88X Plus motherboard.

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent

Pros: excellent CPU but expensive for an AMD but it comes with GPU include and that is good.and its so good in overclocking with normal heat and dose a good job in games.

Cons: expensive I can go with AMD FX 6300 with better performance and less money and the included GPU is nothing for big games so I added another pcie VGA but that CPU still run in good big VGA like r9 series and gtx 970.....but as I said the fx 6300 does the same jab or maybe a little better with less money

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Tech. Missing Software Support

Pros: Bought this to create a mini-ITX home theater PC (HTPC). I want to be able to play the games I really enjoyed starting in 2007, with OpenGL 3 shaders. (Most of the games I play that are newer do not require any more horsepower than that anyway.) Benchmarks looked good and, sure enough, it plays them very well! Wife is very happy to play games with me on the TV.

So no large GPU card required for my needs! Game examples include Overlord, Doom 3, Batman, Dolphin GameCube emulator.

Cons: Because I am creating such a small form factor machine with such an "experimental" chip (CPU and GPU combined), I would like to monitor temperature and other vitals to make sure this machine will last. I wasted hours looking for reasonable tools with no luck (AMD has a "thermal margin" thing that appears unsupported by any tools but AMD Overdrive. Even AMD Overdrive does not show the GPUs).

So I'll just have to hope.

It does make a lot of noise from the OEM fan on the CPU. I wasn't too surprised this would happen. Not a lot of room for other options.
