So What is HSA, Exactly?

Your APU with HSA = A Team of Specialists

AMD A-Series APU

You can think of HSA as a team with different players lending their unique talents to form one powerful unit. The CPU leads the system through everyday tasks. The GPU can zoom its way through tasks that are particularly data-intensive. Other components work together with the CPU and GPU in various, specialized processing tasks. With each member of the team performing a task that is especially suited to it, the efficiencies are designed to give you an enormous boost in performance.

AMD True-Audio Technology – What's the Difference?

Your Games Now Sound as Good as They Look¹

The expectations of gamers have never been higher. Graphics quality and processing speed have advanced rapidly, and the games of today are light years ahead of those from just a few years ago. But advancements in game audio have been more sporadic and less widely adopted. Sound is a critically important part of the immersive experience for gamers and sound engineers are eager to advance their art, but they haven't enjoyed the same kind of attention that continually drives graphics improvements. That is, until now.

AMD's Revolutionary Mantle

AMD's Mantle is a groundbreaking graphics API that promises to transform the world of game development to help bring better, faster games to the PC. Read on to discover how AMD is working with the game development community to revolutionize the PC gaming experience.

What Mantle Does

AMD A-Series APUMantle is the Harmony of Three Essential Ingredients:
  1. A driver within the AMD Catalyst™ software suite that lets applications speak directly to the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  2. A GPU or APU enabled with the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  3. An application or game written to take advantage of Mantle.

Mantle reduces the CPU's workload by giving developers a way to talk to the GPU directly with much less translation. With less work for the CPU to do, programmers can squeeze much more performance from a system, delivering the greatest benefits in gaming systems where the CPU can be the bottleneck.

What it Means for Gamers

Now that Mantle has freed up some extra CPU capacity, we expect Mantle will lead to better games, and more of them, since Mantle makes game development easier. That's not all Mantle will do for gamers. By shifting work to the GPU, a mid-range or older CPU isn't the same handicap it was before. With Mantle, the GPU becomes the critical part of the system, and GPU upgrades will have a bigger impact than before.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Set up just right, you can activate all 12 compute cores on this APU, providing you're willing to follow the step by step directions on how to do it by the HSA Foundation's Github page. Super simple, copy paste commands for terminal (so long as you're logged into as root), downloads a new kernel, and you can compile the new kernel for use on all 12 cores.

Cons: Stock heatsink (by default everyone should know that any included heatsink is bad)

Other Thoughts: I had this when it first came out, and on Windows 8, HSA support wasn't all there. Only 2 out of the 8 GPU compute cores were only activated and it was heavily underpowered. I put this bad boy into a micro mediaserver (two 4TB WD Reds in a RAID 1 using mdadm) and it rips and snorts through everything thus far. I'm not demanding a whole lot from this and probably won't be upgrading until this has been exhausted.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat APU

Pros: Great APU. Handles whatever I throw at it, and is very low cost.

I can get a 7.4 on the Windows Experience scale. Combined with some 2133mhz RAM, I get a 6.4 for the graphics on the WEI scale. Pretty good for an on-board graphic! If money is no object, then just buy the most expensive i7 CPU and buy the highest price video card Newegg sells. Then call it a day. But if budget does matter, then you can't go wrong with this AMD APU. BUT don't rely on the stock cooler. Get a no fill, self-contained water cooler from Corsair for like $60.

Cons: Not much I can think of. I suppose that if you want the absolute fastest chip there is, then go spend quadruple for a high-end i7. The stock cooler woulr be a CON as well I suppose. Go buy a decent water cooling unit. The H60 from Corsair will be less than $70 and you don't have to fill it or anything. Just slap the block on top of the CPU and plug in the fan header.

5 out of 5 eggsAffordable APU

Pros: On board video support of course. Does what it's supposed to do.

Cons: Nothing yet.

Other Thoughts: I was hoping my newest build was an I7 Haswell. I don't have the budget. I was given a micro-atx case, and decided to fill it.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Runs everything just fine. But on paper my i7 Intel cup is faster. I can't see any difference when running the same programs on both machine. Both machines loads programs in the same amount of time.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsGreat All-Purpose CPU

Pros: Fast, inexpensive, low-power.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I got the A10-7850K to replace my old Phenom II 920 and Radeon HD4850. At that point pretty much anything would have been a major upgrade, and since I was building on a budget I decided to give an APU a try. I've been extremely happy with it, and even without a standalone video card it's running every game I play on full or high settings. It's also been great at backing up my DVD collection. There are faster processors in the CPU-only segment, but this APU offers a great cost-to-benefit ratio.

3 out of 5 eggsfairly mundane

Pros: cost. If you don't ever intend to buy a good video card, this might be a reasonable setup.
WEI is 74,74,67,67,79, without a video card.

Cons: "Top of the line" FM2 socket and it runs much like a couple of my much older AM3 chips, a little slower than the X6 1090T; a little better than the X4 965.
My attempt at "Dual Graphics" failed. I bought an R7-260x, rather than the recommended R7-250 and it seems the 260 doesn't work in dual graphics mode.

Other Thoughts: the processor cost of a complete build isn't a huge part of the total cost - so I have that "could've bought a V8" feeling

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I can not believe this beast can run Far Cry 4 without a graphics card! Even my Intel fanboy son was impressed.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Standard procedure, make sure you update all the drivers for AMD Catalyst and your Motherboard.

5 out of 5 eggsGood chip so far

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Not much to the stock cooler, wouldn't overclock with it.

Other Thoughts: Be careful, a lot of motherboards are reporting the A-10-7850 temperatures incorrectly. They are confusing the thermal margin as CPU temps. Use AMD Overdrive to get accurate TM reading.

4 out of 5 eggsGood APU OC's Well

Pros: OC's well on stock fan, makes for a good ITX build. Installs well, but beware that these AMD chips still have the external pins on the processor instead of the socket like Intel. But Newegg simply can't package well and bent my pins. There is my hit for one egg. Product itself is very reliable and durable for what it is.

Cons: Going solo on 800 Mhz Gpu clock is quite but a little underwhelming. Absolute must OC on the GPU side of this chip.

Other Thoughts: OC --> 4.2 Ghz 1.6V 800Mhz Gpu clock and 1300 Mem clock. Easy peezy.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid chip

Pros: This processor is a monster in sheep's clothing, really shines on boards that unlock the use of its 8 built-in GPUs.

Cons: Not really AMD's fault, I should have gotten a heavy duty aftermarket CPU cooler. This processor heats up like a furnace as soon as you start giving it a serious load or overclock it. Playing with overdrive, even though my computer build is loaded with fans (4 120mm and up case fans in a mini-itx box is a lot of air moving through that box), I was still inadvertently causing my machine to shut down from overheating. That stock heatsink and fan aren't made for the kind of raw processing power the processor they're mated with can put out

Other Thoughts: All in all, it's still a great processor, boosts discrete graphics card performance if you use radeon R7 cards or better, and there IS a noticeable difference, even with overdrive turned off
