With the Wolfdale core Intel pours more power into a Core 2 Duo package. The 45nm process allowed Intel to reduce the power needed to 65W. Lower power means lower CPU heat, which translates to lower system heat and longer system life. They also packed more features into the chip.

L2 cache has been bumped to 6MB and the Front Side Bus has been pushed to 1333MHz. You can now use both DDR2 and the hot new DDR3 memory for extreme performance. They also boosted memory access and execution speed with the Wide Dynamic Execution and Smart Memory Access. These combine to let the processor compute more instructions with more data per clock cycle. You'd better watch out; your enemies will be shooting back faster now.

The Advanced Digital Media Boost feature has been enhanced with the addition of the SSE4 instruction set and Intel HD Boost. This will give your entertainment experience a boost with better audio and video processing. It will also help with speech recognition, engineering and scientific applications. Perhaps most important of all will be the boost to security with increased encryption power and speed.

  • newegg Specialized Dual-core Microarchitecture The Intel Core 2 Duo processor includes dual execution cores in a single processor to enable execution of parallel threads or applications on separate cores, resulting in revolutionary dual-core performance, breakthrough processor energy efficiency and exceptional system response when running multi-threaded or multiple demanding applications simultaneously. The innovative 45nm dual-core technology optimizes thermal performance for reduced power consumption and noise.
  • newegg Intel Advanced Smart Cache Intel Advanced Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared L2 cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from fast L2 cache, resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and improved performance.
  • newegg Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T) Intel EM64T provides an enhancement to Intel 32-bit architecture by enabling the desktop processor platform to access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit supporting hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel EM64T can enable use of extended virtual and physical memory.
  • newegg Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) EIST allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to decrease average power consumption and average heat production. Combined with existing power saving features, EIST may provide an excellent balance between providing power when you need it and conserving power when you don’t.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple "virtual" platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows creating unique user environments for multiple family members using the same platform simultaneously.

5 out of 5 eggsthe great one

Pros: Running at 3.6 for 4 years now.

Cons: Not a quad?, big deal bf3 was not out in 2008...

Other Thoughts: Will be handed down because it's still a beast.

Pros: Over clocked to 4 gig day one. Have had this in a PC under heavy use around the clock. Temps never a problem, The PC this is in will be replaced with an i7. But will still be used for other things. This CPU was a shoopertroop.

Cons: NONE!!!!

5 out of 5 eggsAlmost-Living Legend

Pros: It's sad. It's sad that this processor got quickly phased out of fame with the new i3, i5, i7 processors. I used this processor for quite a while and I never had any complications with it. Who ever has used this processor to its large potential, knows exactly how amazing this little piece of architecture really is. If this processor was revamped somehow with Intel's new technology and an 1155 socket, that would be a great sight to behold. Arguably the best processor of the decade, with its low power usage, low heat output, high overclocking abilities, and high capability, it was right for anyone who wanted a normal office computer, or a pretty good intense gaming computer. A legend, for sure.

Cons: There couldn't be any at all...

Other Thoughts: Core 2 Duo II X840. Next Gen?

5 out of 5 eggsImmortal Processor

Pros: I've had this thing since shortly after it showed up at the electronic retail chain I used to work at. We did a floor demo of this thing in an open air case, with the stock cooler, overclocked to 4GHz per core, running Quake Wars (yeah, that long ago), 24hrs a day. We tried every game that we had store-used, including Crysis, and could not even cause the proc to get WARM, much less overheat. I was so severely impressed, that I bought one right away. Been running it clocked varying between 3.2ish and 4.0 per core since then with a Thermal Take Blue Orb II cooler. Never had it give me any problems, and has been the most rock steady processor I have ever owned, and probably will ever own. Seriously, if this thing ever dies, or if I ever have to replace it, I will probably cry and give it a proper viking funeral, burning ship and everything. If you've had one, or still do, you know how great this chip is and why it deserves all the respect the PC gaming community can offer.

Cons: Appeared at the end of an era. No more LGA 775. When I got it, I replaced the bundled ECS MoBo with an ASUS P5Q Deluxe. Wish I'd gotten the DDR3 version of the P5Q Deluxe, because now I am trapped with DDR2 RAM. Fortunately for me it's Corsair Dominator PC8500, so it's just about the best DDR2 ever made. Not the Proc's fault, how could it know things were going to change? Still, it was the very best choice available when I got it, outright beating just about every other offering Intel had.

Other Thoughts: Intel needs to make something like this again, an inexpensive, very durable, unstoppable freight train of a processor. I've built several Core i5/7 machines since then, and none have been as stable or eager to be overclocked as this little Proc was.

My system is:
Antec 900
Corsair TX650
Asus P5Q Deluxe
Intel Core2Duo E8400
Corsair Dominator PC8500 4gigs
EVGA 460 GTX-SE
Corsair Force 3 60GB SSD
WD-Caviar Black 500GB HDD
Windows XP
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

Been keeping it somewhat up to date over the years, and can still smoke just about any game out there.

5 out of 5 eggsGood processor

Pros: I bought this three years ago for a new desktop build, thinking I'd get something cheap yet effective that I could upgrade later. I still use it now, and it runs my games at top levels (Mass Effect2, TF2)

Cons: No cons, I've had absolutely no problems.

5 out of 5 eggsYou are JOKING right? The BEST ever

Pros: This E 8400 cpu is/was the BEST cpu ever developed by Intel. Ut just flat out smokes all competition, no matter what, in the gaming world. It's 4 years old and still rocks with new 2011 games like Battlefield 3, any Call of Duty game, MOH, you name it, it plays it and flawlessly at hgh graphics settings. IF you play on a decent size monitor...say 22-24". You do need a good graphics card to work along with the cpu though. You need balance, so one doesn't bottleneck the other. Say a Nvidia 460 or higher or an AMD 6870 or higher. A combo like this will just slay any game out there.
I do own other machines and they are new, modern systems with all the bells and whistles. I have an i5-2500K with AMD 6950 OC and an i7-2600K with Nvidia 560ti. Both of these machines play NO BETTER than my Duo Core E-8400 oc to 4.0Ghz on air.

Cons: Are you kidding? Cons? Come on...don't pull my leg.
There are no cons, ZERO, none what-so-ever.
BEST processor ever designed and built for gamers.

Other Thoughts: Yea yea yea, I know about benchmarks and all the bull, I run them all the time. I've been doing this computer building a long, long time. But I will tell you this in all honesty, if you have an E-8400, E-8500 or E-8600...keep them. You will never see such a bang for your dollar again.
Intel can't afford to make things that are that great and stay in business very long.
A 4 year life and still going strong as ever?
And nothing being developed in the gaming world in the forseeable future that requires anything more?
Games don't need hyper-threading or more than 2 cores.
AGAIN, if you use a normal size monitor...22-24".
Ultra large MULTIPLE monitors and SLI/Crossfire systems are a different matter.
That's where you need the high dollar stuff like i7's and dual GTX 580 cards (or dual 6970 AMDs).

Take it for what it's worth.
My experience and knowledge is free today ONLY!!!
Use it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU

Pros: Working great. Needed to clean the heat sink for dust about once every year or 2, but have never noticed any overheating issues. Used mainly for gaming (latest game is Battlefield 3), listening to music, surfing the internet, compiling software, composing music, and graphics design.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I installed this almost 4 years ago, and it has yet to disappoint.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: I've had this cpu for over 3 years now without a problem...ever. I'm on the stock HSF and am overclocked to 3.3ghz and the cpu just stays really cool. I love this thing

Cons: Somehow it's still expensive.

Other Thoughts: Only reason you would want to upgrade to an i5/7 is the quad core for gaming imo.
