Crush your enemies, climb the tower of paperwork -- or do both at the same time. Intel's Core 2 Quad Q8200 not only makes it possible, it makes it easy. The Core 2 Quad Q8200 has four cores that run at 2.33GHz and shares 4MB of L2 cache.

Quad cores means true multi-tasking and multi-threading. Tasks or threads get their own core; no more sharing one core and set of clock cycles. This lets you turn your system into the ultimate home entertainment center PC. One core handles the usual action on your operating system, while the second can play a DVD on the TV, the third download a file from internet, and the fourth one sends audio to the kids in another room with no lags or stutters. All this is made easier with Intel’s advanced Digital Media Boost.

The 45nm Intel Core 2 Quad processor is armed with Intel HD Boost, which implementing new Intel Streaming SIMD Extension 4.1 (Intel SSE4.1) instructions for fast high definition video editing and encoding, enhance the multimedia performance.

  • newegg Intel Core 2 Quad-core Processor With four processing cores, the multitasking monster Quad-Core Intel Core 2 processor delivers fourfold the performance on highly-threaded applications, taking your desktop PC experience into a completely new realm of mega power. The powerful processor delivers serious performance on the ultra-demanding games of today and tomorrow. The innovative 45nm quad-core technology optimizes thermal performance for reduced power consumption and noise.
  • newegg Intel Advanced Smart Cache Intel Advanced Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared L2 cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from fast L2 cache, resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and improved performance.
  • newegg Intel Wide Dynamic Execution With Intel Wide Dynamic Execution, each of the four cores can complete up to four full instructions simultaneously, improves execution speed and efficiency, delivering more instructions per clock cycle.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.

5 out of 5 eggsGood CPU

Pros: - Quad Core
- 95W TDP
- Low cost, many features

It performs very well. Does exactly what I wanted it to, and that is to run a mild gaming rig, with the ability to do other everyday things. I use it to edit video, photos and audio, play games, code, and it takes it like a champ. Given my system (listed in other thoughts) I haven't seen a bottleneck anywhere.

Cons: - No VT. I've never needed it, and don't see why I would with this processor.

Other Thoughts: I don't know why people are saying "it doesn't overclock well". I've OC'd mine to 3.00 GHz (429 x 7). Yes, I had to do it via the FSB, but my vCore is nominal, and it's stable. Has been for over a year. Yes it stinks the multiplier is locked. It's an ecobox. It's not meant to perform super fast like a "K" series processor.

Setup:
- ASUS P5Q Deluxe motherboard
- This Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200
- EVGA nVidia 9600GT 1GB vid card
- 8 GB (4 x 2GB) Kingston HyperX DDR2-1066 memory
- WD 1 TB HDD
- ASUS Combo Drive
- Thermaltake 700W Toughpower PSU
- Sabrent 68-in-1 Card reader
- NZXT Sentry 2 Touchscreen fan controller

5 out of 5 eggsStill working and as fast as ever

Pros: Works awesome, only have maxed it out 3 times in the two and a half years i have had it, plays nice with the HIS Radeon 4670 that i have.

Cons: no virtualization support (minor but would be nice)

Other Thoughts: I built this system in June of 2009 for a computer to replace a antique junker that i was using...a p2. at that point i downloaded win 7 rc for it and it was great...a cuple years later its still running, win 7 sp1 now but still fast, still great. i have upgraded the graphics 2 times now and this processor i have looked at replacing but that was only for virtuization support not because of lack of power. i have tried over clociking but that does not work with this one...oh well, had to try. the stock cooler keeps it at about 115 degrees F (47C) doing web browsing and Minecraft. if i let it idle it drops to about 100 F (38C). either way nice processor

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome Everyday CPU...Plus A Little More

Pros: Low power consumption and it's a robust quad core. This thing can take a beating. I can and have put it in my pocket, stored it in a plastic baggie, dropped and even kicked and yet it's still going strong. I've tested this CPU countless times and still performs like it should.

Cons: Only 4MB Cache. Doesn't overclock well, in fact it seems to run slower when overclocked 5%.

Other Thoughts: Had to choose between this and the XEON X3210. I bended up buying both just in case.

5 out of 5 eggsGood CPU

Pros: Bought this around 1yr ago to put inside my gaming PC I built. And so far it has been running smooth. Photoshop CS5 64 bit opens in matter of seconds along with Maya 2011.

Cons: Wouldn't really consider this a con but if you plan to get this for some gaming, don't use the stock cpu cooler. It overheated too fast and shut down my PC. I just bought another CPU cooler and it as worked fine so far.

5 out of 5 eggsQuad

Pros: It's a quad core, works hard that's for sure. Easily overclocked.

Cons: None really that I could think of.

Other Thoughts: Helps with Maya 2010 and adobe programs a great deal.

5 out of 5 eggsNice little Quad

Pros: I've had this installed and running smooth now for almost six months now. Easy to install, no weird issues to report. Super fast little quad core. Runs the latest games just great.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Apps that utilize all four cores run great on this CPU. Even single threaded apps and games don't skip a beat.

4 out of 5 eggsNo VT? Runs Hyper-V Core R2

Pros: It is true what the poster below said about the chip not supporting VT according to the cited Intel page. I however picked this chip up and have been using it for several months now with a core installation of MS Hyper-V R2. It not only runs it, but it is rock solid. I have 4 2k8r2 VM's buzzing away with not so much as a hiccup.

Cons: I am pretty happy with it....

5 out of 5 eggsGreat overall, not the best overclock

Pros: LGA775, reliable, stable, 4 cores, fast, easy to cool, and affordable.

Cons: Not the best overclocking processor in the Q8xxx/Q9xxx series. Chip's FSB is close to being maxed out already. Does not support Intel's virtualization optimization options.

Other Thoughts: If you are reading this review right now because you want another or your first quad-core for an LGA775, spend a couple extra dollars and get a Q9400 or higher model chip.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Processor, but no Intel VT

Pros: The pricing here is pretty high (I paid a bit less for it), but the processor is great for home use and more. I use it in my computer everyday and it handles everything rather well from light gaming to school work. The fan that comes with this is also pretty good and it's quiet, but if you want to do anything intense, then you might want to get a better cooling system.

Cons: First of all, the pricing for this is kind of high. The Q8400 is a little better than this, but it's $14 cheaper. Also, as the title indicates, this is one of the few Intel Core 2 family processors that doesn't have Intel Virtualization Technology. You can still use software virtualization, which allows you to run a 32-bit guest OS using a virtualization program, but the only way for you to run a 64-bit OS is to use hardware-assisted virtualization, which requires Intel VT. If you want 64-bit virtualization, don't get this. Unfortunately, Newegg doesn't tell whether or not their processors have Intel VT in the specifications page.

Other Thoughts: Overall, a very good processor, but Newegg should really start indicating whether or not the processors have virtualization technology. If I had known, I would've gotten the Q8400, which has Intel VT and is just slightly better than this (they're almost the same).

-1 egg for pricing and lack of Intel VT.

3 out of 5 eggsnot bad... could be better

Pros: its a quad... its cheap... it was only $100 when I bought it

I have owned a few of them... one of them is still in my Home Theater PC, it is running @ 2.8GHz on stock voltage...

Cons: for its current price there are much better choices! the heat spreader on these are junk... after a good lapping they will drop between 6c and as high as 14c at full load... well worth it but its time consuming and it tends to void your warranty...

most people will not be able to OC this CPU past the 3.2GHz mark... even at 3.6GHz it only does a solid 40GFlops...

this CPU is limited by its low multiplier and low L2 cache

Other Thoughts: great for an HTPC... bump the FSB to 400 (1600) and maybe even lower the CPU voltage a little bit
