L2 cache . . .
- Pros: As of today's date (October 17, 2009), the specs listed on Newegg's site are the same as those listed on the Intel site. See "Other Thoughts" below.
- Cons: A bit pricey when compared to other processors such as the Q9550 (which has 12MB of L2 cache).
Other than the L2 cache, I can't see the differences between this CPU (6MB) and the Q9550 (12MB).
Unless it's an application-specific issue (for example, a BIOS limitation, etc.), I don't see any reason to get this processor rather than another one such as the Q9550.
- Other Thoughts: Perhaps there was a glitch when the previous review was made a week ago. This is NOT a 65W processor, it is NOT a Q9505s, and it does NOT have a bus/core "multiplier" of 11.
This is a Q9505, 95W processor, and it has a bus/core ratio of 8.5 . . .
Using the "Processor Finder" on Intel's web site and entering the model number "BX80580Q9505" gives only one result (as of today) with an "sSpec# of "SLGYY". That page gives exactly the same specs as what Newegg has listed for this processor. As best as I can tell, Intel does not currently offer a retail version of the Q9505s processor - only an OEM version (it's sSpec is "SLGYZ").
Best Supported Quad for P5N-E SLI
- Pros: - Works with P5N-E SLI mobo (1404 BIOS) w/o any problems
- Its fast - Runs cool
- Cons: - 6MB cache instead of 12MB (I suspect this is why the p5n-e can support it though)
- Other Thoughts: If my board supported the q9550 or q9650 I would have bought those - but this processor is reasonably good and my box should last at least a few years with this processor. I upgraded from an e6400 and the performance difference in multi-threaded apps is astounding. BTW, I installed the stock Intel HSF without any problems at all and I did not have to remove my mobo tray from my case. The processor runs very cool under load. I took away an egg for the cache but it really is not the processor's fault - its my old asus mobo.

great
- Pros: fast.... replaced a Intel Pentium E5300 dual core. windows rated in experience index as 7.1 booted right up with it windows restarted but it was fast. next item is a solid state drive....
- Cons: terrible heatsink. through in the trash.

Fast, but pricey
- Pros: Fast and works great. Motherboard recognized it immediately. This is an upgrade from my E6600 CPU (which wasn't that bad). The E6600 was often maxed out. In comparison, the Q9505 is now loafing along most of the time. If often runs 30% - 50% capacity in situations that would max out my E6600. Now that it's in and working (read below), I'm relatively happy.
- Cons: Pricey in comparison to other Intel CPU's (minus one egg). I would have preferred a Q9550. However, my existing motherboard limited me to the Q9505 as the only recent quad CPU. Also, the Intel provided "thermal solution" did not work (minus another egg). Initially, everything shutdown within a few minutes of startup. I'm not sure if the problem was the thermal compound used, or if the CPU wasn't seated properly, or the Intel CPU fan was just plain useless. It's also possible I messed up initial installation (as this was my first time attempting a CPU installation). Regardless, I ended up having to do an emergency run to a local store and picked up the only 775 socket CPU fan that had available (a Thermaltake V1 - which is probably overkill). With the V1 installed (using the thermal compound provided by Thermaltake), it worked fine (but a pain getting everything hooked back up). Consequently, my CPU upgrade turned out to be more expensive than I had intended.
- Other Thoughts: ASUS P5N-E SLI motherboard
4 GB Corsair DDR2-800 memory

Highlights
 |
Intel Core 2 Quad-core Processor With four processing cores, the multitasking monster Quad-Core Intel Core 2 processor delivers fourfold the performance on highly-threaded applications, taking your desktop PC experience into a completely new realm of mega power. The powerful processor delivers serious performance on the ultra-demanding games of today and tomorrow. The innovative 45nm quad-core technology optimizes thermal performance for reduced power consumption and noise.

 |
Intel Advanced Smart Cache Intel Advanced Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared L2 cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from fast L2 cache, resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and improved performance.

 |
Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T) Intel EM64T provides an enhancement to Intel 32-bit architecture by enabling the mobile processor platform to access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit supporting hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel EM64T can enable use of extended virtual and physical memory.
|
 |
Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) EIST allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to decrease average power consumption and average heat production. Combined with existing power saving features, EIST may provide an excellent balance between providing power when you need it and conserving power when you don’t.
|
 |
Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.

 |
Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple "virtual" platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows creating unique user environments for multiple family members using the same platform simultaneously.
