Intel’s most popular family member adapts and looks better than ever. The 2nd generation Intel Core i5 processor delivers even more performance automatically when you need it and now a better visual PC experience built-in. With Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, the 2nd generation Intel Core i5 processor increases your PC’s speed automatically for your demanding applications. It also includes built-in graphics and a rich set of new features for a stunning and seamless visual PC experience with no additional hardware required. That’s visibly smart performance with a boost.

  • newegg New Microarchitecture on 32nm Process Intel’s cutting-edge 32nm microarchitecture with 2nd gen Hi-K+ metal gate process delivers the 2nd generation Intel Core processors with higher performance at lower power. To further keep power consumption down, the 2nd generation Intel Core i5-2400S processor runs at lower base frequency than the non-S part for a lower TDP of only 65W.
  • newegg Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 More intelligent, energy-efficient, and dynamic than previous generation, Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 gives you accelerating performance when you need it. It delivers an even greater automatic speed increase by allowing processor and graphics cores to run faster than the base operating frequency for demanding applications if the processor is operating below power, current, and temperature specification limits.
  • newegg Intel Smart Cache Intel Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from faster, more efficient cache subsystem resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and improved performance.
  • newegg Integrated DDR3 Memory Controller Integrated memory controller enables two channels of DDR3 1333 MHz memory, resulting in up to 21 GB/sec memory bandwidth. Plus the memory controller's lower latency and higher memory bandwidth delivers amazing performance for data-intensive applications.
  • newegg Built-in Visuals (with H Chipset) The visual features built into the 2nd generation Intel Core processor family deliver everything you need to enjoy a stunning and seamless visual experience. Intel Quick Sync Video and newly-added Intel Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) make media processing incredibly fast. New built-in Intel HD Graphics delivers discrete 3D graphics performance without the needed cost and power of a discrete graphics card, and features Intel Clear Video Technology than enhances video playback, image quality, and color fidelity for a premium visual experience. What’s more, add another dimension to what you see on your PC with Intel InTRU 3D technology which supports stereoscopic 3D Blu-ray playback in full 1080p resolution over HDMI 1.4.

5 out of 5 eggsA Bit Pricey

Pros: Bought this for use in a home server. Planned on putting it in a Mini-ITX motherboard and needed a CPU with good performance, but not too high a TDP. This CPU looked like a good choice.

Cons: Intel tends to charge a premium price for their CPUs.

Other Thoughts: Performance of this CPU seems decent. I later found that the Intel Celeron G530 had the CPU features I wanted for my home server and is significantly less in price. For any future builds I probably would have chosen that CPU over this one due to the price. My home server doesn't have a lot of CPU workload on it. Mainly used for backups of PCs.

3 out of 5 eggsUnlucky me!

Pros: 65 w processor. This processor is great in that it offer higher end processing abilities and yet takes up less power than most higher end processors. Price is reasonable.

Cons: Can't say for certain, but either this cpu or my mobo came defective. I purchased an Asus P8P67-PRO to go with this processor.

Other Thoughts: It’s rare but, sometimes good brands arrive at your doorstep defective. I was one of the unlucky ones. Bought a brand new rig, all in parts from here. Hooked it all up and voila. NOTHING! Except for a red light on the mobo reading trouble with cpu. Cpu was cold to the teach after leaving it on for while. With no technical tools in hand and no compatible parts lying around, had no way to distinguish whether it was the mobo or cpu. Called Asus for technical support, they concluded the same. Contacted Newegg on online chat and explained all the above. They agreed to replace both. Glad they could see the logic in doing that. And really glad that Newegg stands by their customer when it’s needed. Thank you Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat processor

Pros: really fast

Cons: cannot be truly overclocked, I won't take an egg off for that because its my own fault, should have spent 25 extra dollars for the 2500k, oh well, the stock CPU fan is not enough, runs at 99 degrees using prime 95.

Other Thoughts: great processor, bad fan, if you don't feel like spending a little more its a great CPU.

Cons: um...i guess it's not quite able to raytrace my car designs in realtime yet

5 out of 5 eggsslick-worth every penny

Pros: Incredible processor, as another review said 1.6Ghz idle up to 3.3 Ghz, I am thoroughly impressed with how this processor handles video encoding. I am able to compress/encode my 8gb video files down to 3gb or less using handbrake in 3.5 hours (used to take me 28hours with my core 2 duo!)

Cons: heat sink/ fan assembly is a little weak in its attachment as others have noted, but nothing to cry about.

Other Thoughts: Everything fit snug with ample space in this setup:
Antec ISK 300-150
ASrock H67M-ITX LGA-1155 MB
Patriot Gamer 2 Series 8Gb DDR3 Ram
OCZ Solid 3 60G Sata III SSD
intel Core i5-2400s

4 out of 5 eggsDecent but relatively pricy

Pros: Agree with the previous comments. You pay the price for the low power consumption, not the performance. If you are looking for performance, in the same price range, you have many better choices.

Cons: Very limited room for OC. If you intend to play with OC, skip this one and buy i5-2500K.

Other Thoughts: Newegg delivered this product in a soft envelope. The box came in with damaged corners. Fortunately, the processor itself and the stock fan were not damaged.

3 out of 5 eggsPoor Stoack Cooler

Pros: Processor is great!

Cons: Intel's stock CPU cooler has very flimsy connections to the motherboard. Takes too much TLC to get it to work. And surprised that it is staying in place.

Other Thoughts: Intel can and should do better in insuring that the cooler is securely attached to the motherboard.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good balance of speed and heat (=noise), midway between the 95W versions and the mobile CPUs. Suits me just fine.

Cons: It's obsolete already! The 2405S is the replacement: has Intel HD 3000 graphics in place to HD 2000.

Other Thoughts: The LGA package is a breeze to install compared to chips with pins. Stock cooler fits easily, so easily I'm afraid I did something wrong :-)

5 out of 5 eggsFANTASTIC

Pros: -Satisfyingly Fast!

-Turbo boost: from 1.6GHz at idle or low demand to 3.3GHz when I stress it. Makes Win 7 buttery smooth even with it's iGPU. I like that it immediately adjusts freq. on the fly with no user input.

-Runs cool even at full load with stock HSF. Around 40 degrees is the highest I saw.

-Low profile HSF

Cons: Minor items not worth egg deduction, but still worth noting:

-I'm not fond of the new stock HSF attaching design. Doesn't seem as a solid of a connection as previous designs.

-No hyperthreading. Would have been a nice feature.

-Price vs. AMD, but you also get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: I've always been an AMD fan since the beginning due to price vs performance. But my few recent builds Ive been using Intel, and I always feel like the Intel chips have been more reliable. I've had a few bad AMD machines the last few years while my Intel computers are still running strong.

I feel like Intel really knows what they're doing since the release of the core 2 quads, and more importantly the "i" series.
Deep down I wish I could be an AMD fan again, but I think they're starting to lag behind the competition.

**Paired this with an ASUS mini-itx H61 board, 8GB of 10666 DDR3 G.Skill ram, and a 200 watt mini-ITX case. Runs like a dream!
