Intel Trusted Execution Technology provides hardware-based mechanisms that help protect against software-based attacks and protects the confidentiality and integrity of data stored or created on the client PC. It does this by enabling an environment where applications can run within their own space, protected from all other software on the system. These capabilities provide the protection mechanisms, rooted in hardware, that are necessary to provide trust in the application's execution environment. In turn, this can help to protect vital data and processes from being compromised by malicious software running on the platform.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great with esxi 4.1

Pros: Using with an Intel S1200BTL board and 16g ram. It has been running for several months now, no problems. All the vm's nice and fast including win7/64b running adobe cs 5.

Cons: none

3 out of 5 eggsWas fast and rebate problems

Pros: Faster then my hard drive.

Cons: I got this for my laptop and it was really fast at first then it slowed down to about half speed after a month. Still much faster then the hard drive I had before.

The worse part was the rebate, you have jump through hoops and in the end they didn't give the zip code. I sent emails and of course there is no number so I'm out the rebate.

Other Thoughts: I use intel for most of our datacenter and this is bad enough to stop. I am just disappointed with their rebate system, it's obviously a scam to not have to pay the customer.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful Sandy Bridge Xeon

Pros: Very efficient and energy saving 32nm server processor. I have 2 Minecraft server's, TF2 and MW3 dedicated server and on busy hours this CPU handles all my needs at ease.
Got to love the 8MB L3 cache and 4 cores. Still over kill atm, but it has plenty of room to grow.
Idle at 1.024v in CPUz and when you run demanding apps it will crank up it's multiplier and voltage thanks to turbo boost.
Has virtualization for my virutal machines. HT is not needed for me.

Cons: A little pricy, this is what you pay for an Intel processor vs AMD. Cheapest Xeon 1155 Sandy Bridge out there. I was going to go for the i5 2400 but I needed ECC ram for my server board.

Other Thoughts: My server specs;
CPU: Xeon E3-1220
Board: SuperMicro MBD-X9SCL+-F
RAM: 2x(4GB) 8GB Samsung M391B5273CH0-CH9
3x 1TB hard drives 2 in raid1
Windows Server 2008 R2 x64

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU but no hyperthreading

Pros: Great performance for low power consumption at a reasonable price. runs cool in my super micro XPSCM-F-O (great board btw). supports virtualization (as do most modern CPUs, AES)

Cons: no hyperthreading though many workloads may not need hyperthreading. Still for virtualization (VMware, Hyper-V, XenServer) hyperthreading is desireable so pay the extra 30 bucks and get teh E3-1230 minimaly. All the boards that support these max out at 32GB ECC memory which is great however they I have not found anyone that manufactures 4x 8GB memory kit yet. I have been going with 4x 4GB crucial ECC 1333mhz on the 3 builds that I have done to date which is a bumeer since you are efectivly capped at 16GB which can run out quickly if you are using this to run a virtualization platform.

Other Thoughts: The pricing in this line is such that the 3.3Ghz E3-1240 is the best performance for your dollar. The next CPU up in teh 80W class - the E3-1270 is a lot more money proportianaly for the small increase in speed so I think the 1240 is the best value and what I buy in this line

5 out of 5 eggsSimply Amazin

Pros: FAST!
Highly Efficient
Great Packaging
Did I mention Fast?

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Very fast and yet so efficient.

Paired with a Supermicro MBD-X9SCM-F-O, Kingston KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G and a Kingwin Platinum PSU It is using 40-45 Watts Idle with 2x 2.5 inch drives. Goes up to about 50 watts with moderate load. (Used a Kill-a-Watt)

4 out of 5 eggsE3 1220 Fast low wattage

Pros: Fast chip, good cache, low wattage. I am on a Asus E7 1u w/ 16 gig and a revodrive. The server is very speedy.
You can't beat the price to step into a Xeon cpu.

Cons: This chip supports VT-D but not hyperthreading. If you want hyperthreading I think the 1240 is the first in the E3 series. This is really not a con if you don't want HT.

Other Thoughts: I think I'll order a 1240 as I like hyperthreading. In most cases it does improve my speed. Your case may be different. I run Xen/KVM and in most of my tests show hyperthreading helps. I like my vm's to have 2 cpu's or more. Also note running Xen true pvm's are way faster the a full hvm guest. Issue is redhat has just dropped xen support in the 6 release. Boo redhat... boo....

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: >Fast!
>Lower power use

Cons: >None that I can think of

Other Thoughts: Awesome chip. More cache than a similar i5 for about the same price. Uses less power too. Looks like Intel cut 15 watts out of this by leaving out the integrated graphics, which is perfect since I had no intention of using them. I've paired this with an Asus P8P67 MB and it works great, even if it's not offically a supported combination. EFI and Windows both see it as a Xeon. Saves me 15 watts that would have never been used. And more cache is always nice. This is offically my go-to CPU in this general price bracket. For only a few bucks more than a similar i5 you get a chip that's a little faster and uses a bit less power. Perfect!
