As the first level of Intel’s Sandy Bridge processor family gave you the visuals you want built-in, the 2nd generation Intel Core i3 processor offers a fast, responsive, and visually immersive PC experience available to everyone. With the 2nd generation Intel Core i3 processor, you get built-in visuals that offer a rich and exciting set of capabilities for a stunning and seamless visual PC experience with no additional hardware required. Also featured is Intel Hyper-Threading Technology, which enables each processor core to work on two tasks at the same time, giving you smart multitasking performance that moves between applications quickly and without hesitation. This is where to start for visibly smart performance.

  • newegg Fully Integrated Microarchitecture on 32nm Process The Intel microarchitecture codename Sandy Bridge is an incredible leap in processor integration and manufacturing introduced in the 2nd generation Intel Core processor family. Manufactured entirely on Intel 32nm process technology, Sandy Bridge unifies processor cores, memory controller, last-level cache (LLC), and graphics and media processing. Such tight integration enables a host of performance and efficiency improvements, including fast access by cores and graphics to shared data in the last-level cache to accelerate graphics processing, fewer buses over which data and signaling must travel for faster processing, and more memory bandwidth for the cores to boost system performance.
  • newegg Intel Hyper-Threading Technology (HT Technology) Intel Hyper-Threading Technology delivers thread-level parallelism on each processor resulting in more efficient use of processor resources—higher processing throughput—and improved performance on the multi-threaded software of today and tomorrow.
  • newegg Intel Smart Cache Intel Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from faster, more efficient cache subsystem resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and improved performance.
  • newegg Built-in Visuals The 2nd generation Intel Core processors integrate a suite of technologies built right into the processor that deliver stunning visual experiences. Intel Quick Sync Video is breakthrough hardware acceleration that makes fast work of creating, editing, synchronizing, and sharing your videos at home and on the internet. Built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000 enables superior mainstream gaming and 3D experiences – without the need for a discrete graphics card. Enjoy stunning visual quality and color fidelity for spectacular HD playback and immersive web browsing with Intel Clear Video HD Technology, plus the ultimate 3D visual experiences seamlessly from your PC with Intel InTru 3D Technology.
  • newegg Intel Advanced Vector Extensions (Intel AVX) Intel AVX is a new 256 bit instruction set extension to SSE and is designed for applications that are Floating Point (FP) intensive. Intel AVX improves performance due to wider vectors, new extensible syntax, and rich functionality. This results in better management of data and general purpose applications like image, audio/video processing, scientific simulations, financial analytics and 3D modeling and analysis.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x) Increasing manageability, security, and flexibility in IT environments, virtualization technologies like hardware-assisted Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) combined with software-based virtualization solutions provide maximum system utilization by consolidating multiple environments into a single server or PC. By abstracting the software away from the underlying hardware, a world of new usage models opens up that reduce costs, increase management efficiency, strengthen security, while making your computing infrastructure more resilient in the event of a disaster.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value to be sure

Pros: Price/Sandy Bridge/64 bit/4 threads with 3.1 GHZ&3MB L3!!! Low power, low heat. Save on a video card if need be(don't expect to be blown away though).

Cons: No overclocking. If you could this chip would be the most popular hands down.

Other Thoughts: Haven't had any problems with this chip. Would buy it again and again. The $$ you save on the chip you can spend maxing out your RAM and a good, fast HDD. You're better off getting this chip with all the RAM you can cram into your board, with a faster HDD (and a video card if you want games) than you are getting an i-5 with less ram and an older HDD. I went from an 10yr old setup (an athlon XP, ddr 2100 RAM) and was able to upgrade my RAM, cpu, and mobo while still using my old SATA HDD. The bottleneck right now for me is the STILL the HDD. Not totally sold on SDD's, but this chip with enough RAM might make it worth it. This whole series of chips are FAST. Get good supporting components to really let it shine. Believe me, this chip has not let me down. I managed to get a quantum leap in performance for just over a couple hundred bucks. Buy this chip with any board, max out the ram, and you're rolling.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Excellent purchase for a HTPC. dual core handles easy HTPC tasks like surfing, audio/video encoding, ripping with ease. Integrated HD3000 graphics pushes out 1080p video with ease. Low 65w TDP makes this thing stay cool even with the stock intel heatsink/fan. I'm very happy with this purchase and use in a HTPC

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: removed the stock thermal paste that's included on the heatsink/fan and replaced with some aftermarket paste. Dropped my temps a few degrees with stock heatsink/fan.

5 out of 5 eggsTicks Like A Clock

Pros: "No brain" chip choice for anyone that doesn't want to spend nearly $500 for an i7 plus discreet graphic card, but still wants high performance. Not only that, it's low wattage, which was one of my primary goals for the computer I built. I have no graphics card in my computer, use an Antec Earthwatts 380 watt power supply. I use the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO cooler because I don't like the inefficiency or potential noise of stock coolers. I have occasionally opened the computer case to check the CPU cooler fan to make certain it's physically working. The overkill of the Cooler Master cooler is what I want because the system runs so cool the CPU fan is often not even on. It's a very efficient way to go and I like efficiency.

I have had no issues with the built-in HD 3000 video for anything I've tried on this computer. With this chip you don't need a graphics card unless perhaps an EXTREME gamer with perfectionist need for the best.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The chip is hyper-threaded, which makes it work much better than if it were not. When I was testing a video editor, the program thought my computer had 4 cores. The way I see things, you are wasting money on an i5 or i7 unless you are an EXTREME gamer with a perfectionist need for the top of the line.

When the third generation of this chip is released, get the HD 4000 graphics version of it and there will be even less need for a separate graphics card for EXTREME gamers.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing for the price

Pros: - Cheap
- Fast
- Reasonable graphics

Cons: - Doesn't come with a bottle of unicorn tears like the i7 processors.

Other Thoughts: I bought a bunch of these for some workstations that needed to be small and inexpensive for a small office. I was blown away at their speed... Can't tell a difference in real-world use between this and the i5-2405S in the server (the most visible difference is that the i3 sees about 0.2 more seconds of the Windows 7 animation on boot, so the dots are a bit closer together). These are built with DH67CFs and SATA III SSDs on the correct ports, which almost certainly helps. They cold boot with the right BIOS settings in about 3 seconds.

WEI: 5.9, with the low points the RAM and graphics.

4 out of 5 eggsperfect for HTPC

Pros: Very fast for the home theater P.C. Very good for transcoding speed, combined with a SSD drive and a good motherboard can give you boot times between 9-15 seconds.
Good thermal with stock fan and heatsink, I was able to get a quiet fan with some adjustment in Bios. The 3000 chip is solid for video viewing and hdcp compliant, which is worth the time savings shopping around for video cards that are hdcp compliant and have the same thermal level as the intel chip and its graphic unit combined. I doubt the 3000 is much good for gaming.

Cons: Using the Intel 3000 on plasma screens (3d and 2d) poses a problem where texts are not as sharp as they could be. reading texts from websites like Netflix and Hulu is a challenge. sharpness on LCD and LEDs are ok. In comparison to a geforce 430 where texts are sharp and higher resolutions are possible on plasma (vdeophiles love plasma) the HD 3000 come in a distant second.

Other Thoughts: This processor is perfect for use in Home theater P.C.s fast enough to handle all the processing done on such P.Cs. it also runs cool and quiet with stock heatsink and fan which is small enough for a 1u size case. I believe better drivers will emerge which will make the HD 3000 more competitive with geforce 430 and 450.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for an HTPC

Pros: I'm using this in a Ubuntu 12.04 (beta2 at the time of this review) HTPC. Its performance is outstanding with default settings. It might even be overkill for just an HTPC... The integrated graphics are quite impressive as well.

I have this paired with one of the Intel branded motherboards and everything is great!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I was going back and forth between this and one of the slightly slower (~2.6GHz) 35 Watt core i3's... this might be overkill for an HTPC though I'll never know how well the other option would have performed.

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT CPU/VIDEO SOLUTION

Pros: GREAT CPU! THE BUILT IN HD VIDEO IS GREAT! EVEN THOUGH I AM ONLY USING THIS IN A HOME MEDIA SERVER IT HELPS WITH THE TRANSCODING WHEN NEEDED. USING THE INCLUDED HEATSINK AND FAN AS THEY DO THE JOB. CPU RUNS COOL WHICH KEEPS FAN NOISE DOWN.

Cons: NONE
