Intel’s most popular family member adapts and looks better than ever. The 2nd generation Intel Core i5 processor delivers even more performance automatically when you need it and now a better visual PC experience built-in. With Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, the 2nd generation Intel Core i5 processor increases your PC’s speed automatically for your demanding applications. It also includes built-in graphics and a rich set of new features for a stunning and seamless visual PC experience with no additional hardware required. That’s visibly smart performance with a boost.

  • newegg Fully Integrated Microarchitecture on 32nm Process The Intel microarchitecture codename Sandy Bridge is an incredible leap in processor integration and manufacturing introduced in the 2nd generation Intel Core processor family. Manufactured entirely on Intel 32nm process technology, Sandy Bridge unifies processor cores, memory controller, last-level cache (LLC), and graphics and media processing. Such tight integration enables a host of performance and efficiency improvements, including fast access by cores and graphics to shared data in the last-level cache which accelerate graphics processing, fewer buses over which data and signaling must travel for faster processing, and more memory bandwidth for the cores to boost system performance.
  • newegg Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 More intelligent, energy-efficient, and dynamic than previous generation, Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 gives you accelerating performance when you need it. It delivers an even greater automatic speed increase by allowing processor and graphics cores to run faster than the base operating frequency for demanding applications if the processor is operating below power, current, and temperature specification limits.
  • newegg Intel Smart Cache Intel Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from faster, more efficient cache subsystem resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and improved performance.
  • newegg Integrated DDR3 Memory Controller Integrated memory controller enables two channels of DDR3 1066/1333 MHz memory, resulting in up to 21 GB/sec memory bandwidth. Plus the memory controller's lower latency and higher memory bandwidth delivers amazing performance for data-intensive applications.
  • newegg Built-in Visuals (with H/Z68 Chipset) The 2nd generation Intel Core i processors integrate a suite of technologies built right into the processor that deliver stunning visual experiences. Intel Quick Sync Video is breakthrough hardware acceleration that makes fast work of creating, editing, synchronizing, and sharing your videos at home and on the internet. Built-in Intel HD Graphics enables superior mainstream gaming and 3D experiences – without the need for a discrete graphics card. Enjoy stunning visual quality and color fidelity for spectacular HD playback and immersive web browsing with Intel Clear Video HD Technology, plus the ultimate 3D visual experiences seamlessly from your PC with Intel InTru 3D Technology.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x) Increasing manageability, security, and flexibility in IT environments, virtualization technologies like hardware-assisted Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) combined with software-based virtualization solutions provide maximum system utilization by consolidating multiple environments into a single server or PC. By abstracting the software away from the underlying hardware, a world of new usage models opens up that reduce costs, increase management efficiency, strengthen security, while making your computing infrastructure more resilient in the event of a disaster.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: This is exactly what I needed and was expecting from Intel. I mostly game, watch videos, and surf the web and this all can be done at the same time with ease.

Cons: Integrated graphics wasn't enough for me, so I upgraded to dedicated graphics card.

4 out of 5 eggsVery fast.

Pros: 3Ghz Quad core. More than enough for anything you'll need. Gaming, Multitasking, or plain use, you name it and it can handle it nicely.

Cons: Like all Intel CPUs, stock fan does a poor job at cooling the CPU but it's not hot enough for cause major problems.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Chip I Ever Owned!

Pros: I bought this in a pre-build machine and was planning to eventually upgrade it to the 2500k but after having it a couple months I don't see any reason to ever upgrade it in the near future. It is a monster and handles every process and multitasking project I can think of tossing at it!

For under $200 I can't possibly recommend anything else. On a daily basis I will be downloading video, running FOREX software, surfing the net, burning disks and doing some intense gaming all at the same time, not to mention running the spyware and anti-virus and all the other background processes that run constantly, and this chip has never even stuttered on the job.

Seriously, if you like to overclock then of course this isn't the chip for you and you should go for the 2500k but if overclocking isn't on your agenda then save the extra dollars and buy this one.

Cons: So far it hasn't improved my gaming skills.

5 out of 5 eggsGiggling about it still.

Pros: Cheapest Core-i Series processor with Quad-Core. 3.0GHz. The pros are pretty obvious. On stock cooling and no overclocking, stays at a cool 30 degrees Celsius. On load, doesn't break 60.

Cons: Nothing so far.

Other Thoughts: Ridiculously faster than old Desktop machine (Pentium D 925) also bought here. Compared to Core 2 Duo 2.5 GHz processor, it feels like load times have been brought down by 33% overall in most games and installations (Installed Windows 7HP in less than 12 minutes, thanks partially to this, SATA 3.0GB, and a SSD HDD. On old system with SATA 1.5GB, this was a half-hour.)

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Cpu

Pros: * Runs even the most Modern and demanding games with ease.

* Runs Skyrim across 4 cores with around 30-40% usage on each core.

* Virtually silent stock Fan.

* Insane multitasking

* 3.33GHz Turbo Mode

Cons: None whatsoever.

Other Thoughts: This cpu is a beast. You always hear about the famous i5 2000k... but you honestly don't need it. This cpu handles everything with ease.

I have no idea what would bog this cpu down.... maybe extreme video creation?

5 out of 5 eggsBest i5 2nd gen price performer

Pros: This chip has very cool technology.
Integrated with Virtu visual virtualization, SSD Smart cache control in the processor, dynamic performance and power management makes this CPU is a computer scientists fantasy.

Cons: You pay a higher price for the new features but if you want to have those features, where else you gonna get them?

Other Thoughts: With this chip, no one in their right mind will purchase an SSD larger than 64 GB. Take the money you save on your SSD and buy this chip, sell your old chip, come out ahead. Most of what you load into a 250 GB boot drive does not get loaded into your memory.
Think about it. Your real memory usage doesn't go much over ... 32 GB with the Z68 chip set. And I don't see my machine much over 4 GB.
