5 out of 5 eggsGreat entry-level CPU

Pros: Low price, low power consumption, low heat. Handles 1080p+ video streaming and any other basic computing tasks with ease. Much to my surprise, it could actually handle XCOM: Enemy Unknown at ~20 fps without a separate video card, so some gaming wouldn't be out of the question either, just so long as you aren't wanting to play anything demanding, like a modern FPS title.

Cons: None, just so long as you have realistic expectations of the performance you're going to get at this price.

Other Thoughts: Hard to beat for an entry-level or media PC.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for a HTPC build

Pros: -low electricity usage, 35W
-more than enough cpu/gpu power to watch 1080p blu-ray movies, netflix streaming, huluplus, etc...
-my cpu I was able to undervolt by -0.140V offset, which is impressive!
-low profile heatsink and fan, perfect for a HTPC case with virtually no extra space to spare
-my whole htpc only uses 29W at idle and 35-40W while watching HD content

Cons: -sandy bridge, I'm sure there will be ivy bridge 35W options out soon
-pricey, but you get what you pay for, I paid for future proofing

Other Thoughts: i3 2120T
ASRock H77M
4GB DDR3 ram
LG blu-ray drive
160GB hdd (soon to be replaced by a ssd)
Corsair CX430M PSU
Lian Li PC-C50B case

5 out of 5 eggsHTPC

Pros: A nice low power i3 for my HTPC. It sips power now. I only have one 80mm fan running at an inaudible speed. The processor rar passively with a Mini Ninja Rev.B cooler. Didn't top 50c while encoding media.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I have since put this processor in our kitchen HTPC. It is an Mini ITX system. Average operating temperature is between 30c & 40c. It's average power use for the whole system is 35 watts.

4 out of 5 eggsLow Power CPU!

Pros: Low Power Consumption
Built-in Video

Cons: Faulty Heat Sink Cement

Other Thoughts: I bought this CPU to use in a low power and silent home theater PC (HTPC). The entire computer uses about 45 watts on average, which is 1/3 the power usage of the HTPC it replaced.

My previous HTPC used an AMD chip which claimed it could play back HD video. While it was able to do so, the refresh rate made the picture look unnatural, and resizing windows caused a 1-2 minute video sync to take place. On my new HTPC, this Intel processor handles HD video playback beautifully. When resizing windows during playback, the video syncs within 2-3 seconds.

My only complaint is with the heat sink cement that comes with the bundle. Basically, the cement is already attached to the heat sink, and it is supposed to melt onto the CPU as it gets hot for the first time. This connection between the heat sink, cement, and CPU is supposed to enable heat to dissipate quickly. The BIOS reported that the CPU was operating hotter than the maximum recommended temperature. To resolve the issue, I scraped off the existing cement and replaced it with Arctic Silver thermal compound (which I had on hand). Almost instantly, the CPU ran 20 degrees Celsius cooler, and it was near the lower end of it's acceptable temperature range.

When I build a HTPC in the future, I will definitely use an Intel "T" processor.

5 out of 5 eggsupdate to prior post

Pros: Low wattage CPU, good onboard graphics, lots of horsepower for low wattage personal computer.

HTPC or standalone server this is a great buy. Read on with the review but in the end, I would buy this CPU again.

Cons: This is not a con. I put it in this area because its my own con. I used this CPU to run my home server 2008 R2 and later installed ESX. I ran a virtual domain without any issues, 2 Windows 2008 R2 servers, 2 Windows 7 and 2 XP. I later upgraded to a Xeon CPU. For the intended purpose of a stand alone server this CPU is great, to run a couple VMs its a good choice. Running many VMs its time for a Xeon. That was my goof but I didn't see myself going that big that fast.

Other Thoughts: I pulled this CPU and threw it into a computer that I built for my parents. With the choice in case, CPU heatsink and PSU the computer is 100% silent. Tied with a SSD the computer is awesome. I didn't build them a powerhouse but it worked out very well. Can handle multitasking, HD video and provides snappy response with applications. Biggest advantage was onboard video and low wattage pull, was able to drop down on the PSU wattage. Awesome CPU.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat HTPC and Utility CPU

Pros: I bought this CPU specifically because I wanted a capable CPU with processing power for my HTPC that I was building. I chose this one because 1) it’s a Core i3 and 2) it was rated at a low 35 watts. I was tempted to find a lower power because the TiVo this HTPC was to replace only pulled about 33 watts total. The Core i3-2120T was a good choice as it probably doesn’t pull close to the 35 watts for which it’s rated. I haven’t hooked up a meter yet, but the CPU meter usually doesn’t go over 10% in either watching live TV or playing back recorded programs. And for the work that it does, the CPU temp never climbs above 35 degrees Celsius. The stock cooler/fan is fine for my HTPC and very quiet. Inside my case I have to get within a couple of feet of the case and mute the TV to hear it.

Cons: Cost per cycle is really the only con for this CPU. It is a great CPU and much more powerful than any low-wattage CPU I’ve ever used, but for my uses (HTPC), it seems I spent more than I needed. A similarly low-wattage AMD CPU could have saved me about $100 and still gotten the job done handily.

Other Thoughts: I use a stand-alone graphics card, so I don’t use the on-board GPU.
