Good CPU, bad pricing.....

white Reviewed By: ioniancat21 on 12/26/2008
Rating + 4
Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: increased performance over older Quad Core CPU's
Cons: Price Vs. Performance
Other Thoughts: Basically, if you already own a Quad Core Q6600 or a higher end Dual Core CPU, upgrading to this won't improve your performance by a great degree. Also factoring in $200+ for a motherboard and 3 sticks of DDR3 memory, this setup could cost more than it's worth. If your an advanced user who runs software that utilizes the multiple cores of your CPU, such as VMware or other, you will notice the performance enhancements to a greater degree. In my opinion, most regular users and gamers would be better served buying a Q6600 and a bargain motherboard which will produce similar results at half the cost. Wait until next year when prices come down substantially.

Pros: Definitly one of the best processors out there right now. I was blown away at how fast this chip was, and I just came off of a Core 2 Quad 9450 and I still noticed a huge difference. Crysis is now a thing of the past with this processor, mind you I only said processor not graphics card
Cons: None at all. The only thing that would have been nice would have been to put the new 35nm chips in instead of the 45nm because the 35s are gonna be out in less then 6 months anyway, so they should have just put them into this processor.

Very Nice

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: It is a very fast processor, very cheap for i7 and has great performance, has great OC abilities
Cons: runs hot even with non-stock cooler 50c idle 70c full load
Other Thoughts: i replaced my phenom x4 2.5ghz with this and i dont really see a big difference, if you already have newer quad core just stick with it and save ur money for when the iprocessors come out or these prices drop, or just buy the phenomII x4 they boost great performance for under 200 and run cooler then intels

Cons: 130w tdp w/ 45nm process, toasty.
Other Thoughts: Watercooling with ek supreme lt, prime 95 full load 8 threads, max 62c. It's a hot tomali when overclocked thats for sure. But it sure can overclock! I also have a TRUE rev c which hit 73c with a loud 131 cfm ys tech. Ye haw!

Home supercomputer?

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Intel never seems to run out of things to do with all the transistors they can fit on these chips. 4 cores, hyper threading, 4-256k L2 cache, 8M L3 cache, turbo mode, and a bunch of other stuff. The stock fan keeps the temperatures well under 60C under load and are reasonable quiet. I have to admit I don't know what I am going to do with all of this compute power. If I had any more cores I would have to install mpich2 and get serious about home supercomputing.
Cons: Price is still kind of high but coming down. 130W is a lot of power for one chip, but it doesn't draw anywhere near 130W unless you are pushing all 4 cores.
