5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: Us it in combination with a Asus P7P55D Evo for a perfect server pc under my stairs. Runs a minecraft server and acts as a nas. Also runs some videos through handbrake before publishing to YouTube.

Cons: Runs very hot with stock cooler. Sits at about 90C When running handbrake. Make sure to get a aftermarket cooler of some sorts and all your problems will be fixed :)

Other Thoughts: Bought the CPU, Motherboard, Coolermaster Case, Corsair 620W PSU and EVGA 6600ts at a garage sale for $30. Best $30 i've ever spent!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great cpu for its time. I am still running it after five whole years of use. I am about to replace it with an xeon 1241v3 though. It is not that best at any one thing but has been a great overall processor for my gaming pc. It runs cool, and handles multitasking decently. It is not a monster and ocassionally gets bogged up when you are flipping through 8 windows on the internet, youtube, and maybe a game.. But that is to be expected of old hardware and new software. These processors are great for a budget build and you can still find them floating around new or used. Although I would just recommend grabbing some of the newer low nm tech. Intel is doing a great job of low power usage while maintaining industry leading performance. I am an AMD fanboy at heart but I cannot argue with Intel. I prefer most of the available motherboards as well.

Cons: Bogs under heavy multitasking (but hey its a 5 year old processor)
Doesn't wipe my....
Doesn't do my laundry..
Doesn't come free..
Doesn't have huge fake balloons to play with..

Other Thoughts: Intel is always ahead of the curve, making a great product. I always recommend going the intel route for the first few builds. They have been exponentially less problematic for me in my 10 years of computer build experience. I still have a softspot for AMD and their approach at GPU/CPU architecture. Although intel takes my money more often than not. Good luck!

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: See Cons for why an egg was knocked off.

3 years ago I decided to get back into building my own systems after issues with the vendor of my newly fried system. Last systems built before this were when 286 chips were new and a good hard drive was 20 MB.

After some research I went with this i7 quad core. Glad I did.
There was a time when AMD were known for overheating. They may have gotten past that but I didn't, so Intel was the only option for me.

Wow, a socket vs. pins. And thermal compounds. Next thing you know they will have in door plumbing.

Before a software issue with ASUS I kept this chip OCed at 3 GHZ for years and it is still working fine.

Cons: The stock fan was an unpleasant surprise. About a year ago alarms started going off for the CPU temperature. Shut the system down and checked for dust. The fan fins brittle; no dust more than the normal month's worth. Replaced it with a Cooler Master product I had left over from another build and the CPU is happily chugging along again.

All good things must pass. The basic idea was to build a system that would last and avoid having to upgrade components - future proofing. 3 years later, the CPU, mother board and optical drive are all discontinued. (All still work too.)

Other Thoughts: CPU = Intel Core – i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8 GHZ
MB = ASUS P7P55D 1156 Intel P55 ATX
HD = Western Digital Caviar Green WD5000CSRTL
RAM = G.Skill Ripjaw Series 8 GB 4 X 2 GB F3-10666CL9D-4GBRL
Video card = Failing –ASUS Radeon HD 5670 after 3 years
Being replaced by ASUS GT630-2GD3 GeForce GT 630
CD / DVD drive = Sony Optiarc AD-7240S-0B
Case and PSU = RAIDMAX SMILODON Extreme Black ATX Case with 500W Power Supply

2 out of 5 eggsHad to Laugh

Pros: Not really sure after all this time.

Cons: I overclocked my old Athlon II X2 250 @4.05Ghz and ran the single core test on Cinebench 11.5 and it's SINGLE CORE score of 1.14 beat out this chip's 1.13 score @ stock 2.80Ghz LOL. Not too bad for a $60 chip.
