Next biggest thing!
- Pros: Super efficient/cool, fast at stock speeds, even faster when overclocked (and it overclocks like MAD), turbo mode (makes it better than most pre-lynnfield i7s in single-thread performance) - which improves performance of single threaded apps by disabling inactive cores & clocking the active core by TDP of the cpu. That means at stock settings (2.66ghz (133x20)) with turbo enabled, you can have single thread performance from a ~3.2ghz core (133x20) - google "Intel Turbo" if you want to learn more (it's a very nice feature). I can't get over how wickedly efficient this thing is!
You're not likely to have any trouble getting any Lynnfield cpu above 3.6ghz - providing you've got an aftermarket cooler for it.
- Cons: No HT (this is basically the only area which really matters where it loses to the i7 920 in performance). The manual multiplier is locked at (or below) stock 20x (up to 24x with turbo mode but that's only with 1 core, or 22x with 2 cores, or 21x with 3 cores (I believe..)). Neither of these should stop you from getting this CPU, unless the i7 870 drops in price or another (better) cpu has been released for a similar price.
Stock cooler is kind of mediocre, just buy an aftermarket one (which brings up another point, why did intel have to make the mounting holes a couple mm further (or was it closer) apart/together than the lga755 coolers? Most of those are rated for higher TDP and would work very well as a heatsink for this).
- Other Thoughts: I'm blown away with how substantial this cpu is. My s939 motherboard died the night before these launched and I almost got an i7 920 setup (which would've cost >$200 more) - I'm glad I didn't. This (and the 1156 mobos) are much more efficient & cheaper to boot - it also bests the i7 920 at quite a few things.
Overclocking: I've got mine at 3.8ghz (181x21 - my P55-GD65 motherboard has a 'bug' or something that enables 21x multiplier on all cores) w/ turbo enabled (4.35ghz on a single core (181x24)). It can go higher, but I prefer to keep my voltage below 1.4 (at 3.8ghz I've got it on 1.36v). At these speeds, my super pi time is slightly under 9.8 seconds. My old 939 x2 4200+ was lucky to get under 35s. I also have a Cooler Master 212 Plus which is phenomenal, running prime95 on a maximum heat generation mode, my fan doesn't have to kick above "idle" (which is at 1000rpm / practically inaudible) to keep it below 45c.
BUY IT!
Great CPU
- Pros: Excellent CPU. Handles my two games that I play just like my Q9550 does. I got this CPU for photoshop, music, and video stuff. It out performs in those tasks really well, but games are really the same.
The turbo boost feature clocks my CPU up to 3.46GHz. Neat feature.
- Cons: The stock cooler sucks. Get an aftermarket cooler even if you do not overclock.
- Other Thoughts: I bought a $30 Cooler Master cooler for it because it was the only cooler I could find that was not a rip off that works with the 1156 socket. It runs mid 30s idle and mid 40s at load.
Xigmatek is a 3 week wait from what I was told from a rep on the adapter kits...... Now my dark knight s-1283v cooler is a paper weight.

Excellent Processor
- Pros: Very fast.
- Cons: Doesn't have an integrated GPU
- Other Thoughts: I have been very impressed with this processor. I have seen an unbelievable increase in performance especially with programs that can utilize multiple cores. I missed the fact that this doesn't have an integrated gpu so make sure you are aware of this if you plan to use integrated video.
fast
- Pros: Lightning fast
4 cores lots of cache great for gaming overclocks like a charm I have it overclocked to 3.2Ghz which means it's just as fast as the i7-960, but for more than half the price. With the zalman 9900 and artic silver 5, it runs at about 33c idle and around 50c on 100% load on all cores. At stock speeds it ran at about 21c idle and 40c load. I never tested it with the stock heatsink, but come on, everyone knows what pieces of junk they are.
- Cons: no hyperthreading, but unless you have to run some high end program that requires lots of processing power, you don't need it
- Other Thoughts: My Setup:
i5 750 overclocked 20% to 3.2Ghz asus p7p55d pro mobo ati hd 5770 WD green 500gb 2x2gb ddr3 1600Mhz corsair corsair 750w power supply zalman9900 cpu heatsink
Great Processor!
- Pros: Great quad core processor with good core clock speed and a lot of overclocking potential. Get all the features of the i7 (minus hyperthreading) for a lot less. Also runs very cool with an aftermarket cooler and havent seen it stutter yet.
- Cons: Stock cooling fan is a little wimpy and you might want to upgrade it if your going to be doing any gaming or video editing.
- Other Thoughts: If your looking for the performance of an i7 but dont have the money for it...this is a great way to save on the processor and motherboard. Highly recommend Newegg and Intel.

Highlights
 |
Intel Core i5 Quad-core Processor With four processing cores, the multitasking monster Quad-Core Intel Core i5 processor delivers fourfold the performance on highly-threaded applications, taking your desktop PC experience into a completely new realm of mega power. The powerful processor delivers serious performance on the ultra-demanding games of today and tomorrow. The innovative 45nm quad-core technology optimizes thermal performance for reduced power consumption and noise.
|
 |
Intel Advanced Smart Cache Intel Advanced Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared L2 cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from fast L2 cache, resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and improved performance.
|
 |
Intel Turbo Boost technology Intel Turbo Boost technology maximizes speed for demanding applications, dynamically accelerating performance to match your workload-more performance when you need it the most.
|
 |
Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) EIST allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to decrease average power consumption and average heat production. Combined with existing power saving features, EIST may provide an excellent balance between providing power when you need it and conserving power when you don’t.
|
 |
Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.
|
 |
Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple "virtual" platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows creating unique user environments for multiple family members using the same platform simultaneously.
