5 out of 5 eggsIntel 980X

Pros: Fast for the time, but still is though.

Cons: um....oatmeal cookies?

Other Thoughts: The processor is old now but isn't slow when comparing to the newer processors today. This was my primary CPU for my gaming rig but now is a server CPU. For the 1k I paid for it I feel bad not using it anymore, the server is not used much at all either. Im still wondering if it was worth it now, did I get all of my money's worth out of it?. X58 is a dead platform for sure but since CPU's haven't gotten that much better than this CPU then I think it still has some life to dish out. RIP X58......RIP

5 out of 5 eggsInsane CPU

Pros: Insane cpu. It's been years since this cpu was released BUT it's still topping the benchmark charts. Normally I would be badly in need of a better cpu to keep up by now. This bad boy is still going strong!

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I want to say price was a con but I'd normally need a new cpu by now to keep up with the times. Tears through everything I throw at it. So it saves me the money to purchase a new cpu. I'm sure this cpu will be competitive for many more years to come. Was definitely worth the investment.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic CPU

Pros: speed, overclocking

Cons: price

Other Thoughts: Best CPU I've had. I put down the money for it when it came out and haven't looked back. By far the best CPU I've had, overclocks well(using Corsair H100), and it's a beast for gaming etc.

5 out of 5 eggsBest I've ever owned

Pros: Insainly fast

Cons: This chip set is being phased out

Other Thoughts: I got this processor as an option in a $5,000 laptop I bought. When I got home from Iraq I put it in my desktop. I barely overclock this sucker at all, up to around 3.8Ghz if that. The only time I've ever maxed this thing out is when running video converters.

5 out of 5 eggsGoing strong since 12/31/2010

Pros: As I said, its been "Going strong since 12/31/2010" and it just keeps going. I am using a ASUS Rampage III formula mobo and I have it OC'd to 4.2 GHZ and have gone to 4.48 GHZ with just air and no problems with the stock fan that came with it! Also the stock fan which does not look like a stock fan with its copper piping is a great extra!
Handles all my games no prob!

Cons: Just the price as usual, but besides that I have NONE!
With this you honestly get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: I am just a regular guy and I am always curious about new tech for computers and I do my best to get an understanding for it all, but I think I would buy the 980x again or even the 990x over the new i7-3960X Extreme Edition Sandy Bridge-E for just one reason and that it does not come with a cooling fan. Looking back on my purchase, if I was doing another new build. For me it was a great convenience to not have to shop around and pay extra for a good cooling fan for my processor, Especially when you are already paying over $1000 and it does what it is supposed to for an air cooler. So unless you already have a CPU cooler or are going to go with something more extreme like water or nitrogen. Yeah... that would be nice hehe. Think about the buying the 980x or the 990x

5 out of 5 eggsUp to snuff!

Pros: I've had this processor for a year and a month now. I have had no problems with it whatsoever. I still have it running on stock air and I've had it up to 3.8ghz I think. I haven't bothered to push it as I haven't had the need for extra performance - yet, and it's on a stock cooler. Great stuff.

Cons: Price I suppose. But, you pay for how fast you want to go!

Other Thoughts: I think Intel has dominated this generation with the i3/5/7's and I have no bias. Hopefully AMD can fight back. I love the ease this processor does overclock with though.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Good Chip

Pros: Overclocked to 4 GHz and is very fast at that speed. No problems whatsoever. Package came with a very nice heatsink, but I installed with the V6 for this build. Running crossfire with asus matrix 5870s platinum X2, Corsair 12gb RAM and maxing out video in games - So beautiful!

Cons: The price when purchased.

Other Thoughts: Use some good thermal paste. Go with Noctua as it is non conductive. It is made for OC chips like this one.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth The Wait (2004)

Pros: This unit is a beast and more than demolishes the tasks you throw in it's path.

I've personally used and continue to use the product in the following ways:

Graphic Design
Audio Design / Production
Video & Audio Encoding
Development (MS Windows/Web/Xbox360)
Virtualization (VMWare/VirtualPC)

I purchased this CPU last year and paired it with a EVGA x58 760 motherboard. I have not been disappointed in any area of performance so far with the exception of some virtualization applications.

This chip survived a bad power supply from the initial build, from which I was very surprised as well as elated.

Cons: The price of course, the original price point of $999.99 was/ is extremely high depending on your uses and level of entry.

Even at a lowered price of around $800.00 this chip is still well above overkill for most users.

Other Thoughts: I wanted to wait at least a year prior to writing anything relating to this product to ensure I had spent some serious "real world" time with it and I must say I have yet to be disappointed.

My last upgrade was in 2004 to an Intel P4 3.2GHz which I've used up until last year when I finally had to upgrade, it was beyond Scott Bakula jump forward, (a quantum leap).

I'm certain that the i7-990x is also worth the money given certain circumstances.
